The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Management at UAlbany will give you a broad understanding of the relationships between government legislation, public policy, economics, politics, civil rights, regulation and finance, and city, state, federal, and global affairs.

The program includes foundational coursework and electives in management and politics, and quantitative methods and policy. Then you get to earn a concentration in the area of study that best matches your personal interests and career goals.

Environmental Policy
You will have the ability to develop basic science skills and gather knowledge about our environment as well as dive deeper into the policies effecting climate change, air quality, and overall life on planet Earth.

Are you ready to make a difference? Perhaps you'd like to counsel children with behavioral difficulties or work with seniors, run a homeless shelter or treat addictions, promote workplace diversity or change social welfare policy - all to help people function at their best in society. That would make you an ideal social welfare major or minor.  

The undergraduate social welfare program at UAlbany teaches you how to advance social, economic and environmental justice and to serve people who are vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed. You will gain firsthand experience working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and/or communities to create change and improve social conditions. 

Gain an advanced understanding of the criminal justice system and criminology. Public Management
Develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective manager in public and nonprofit organizations. To develop specialized skills, you can earn sub-concentrations by taking multiple courses in one or two sub-fields (Local Government Management, Organizational Behavior and Theory, Human Resources Management) or work with your advisor to design your own.

Organizational Behavior & Theory Concentration

• The Organizational Behavior & Theory concentration provides you with the people management skills needed in today’s organizations. The focus is on leadership in teams, groups, and organizations. Courses cover both the process and structure of management and often involve exercises and simulations that practice the skills you need to succeed as a manager.

Local Government Concentration

• The local government management concentration to prepare you for the current and future challenges local governments face. You will learn about real examples of how to manage local governments as well as the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively serve our citizens. Graduates of this concentration have gone on to become professional city, county, town or village managers.

Human Resource Management Concentration
The Human Resources Management curriculum trains you to manage organizations and their employees effectively in the public, private, or non-profit sector.

Homeland Security
Increase your understanding of the origin, nature, and impact of terrorism; intelligence analysis and information sharing; the role of intelligence, homeland security, and criminal justice agencies; and analytic, methodological, and technical skills used to analyze security and intelligence issues. The master’s in geography offers a two-year thesis track or one-year, non-thesis track. Choose the thesis track if you intend to pursue further academic study or the non-thesis track if you are obtaining a master’s degree to advance your career in the field.

Make a positive impact on the wellness of at-risk populations with skills and experience you can use to help public health organizations achieve their goals.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) provides you with a strong foundation in primary public health fields and advanced knowledge in your area of interest. Concentration options include biomedical sciences, biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social behavior and community health.

Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, the two-year MPH program includes professional internships that let you directly contribute to the success of public programs that aim to eradicate disease, develop vaccines, reduce infant mortality, ensure food safety, monitor water quality, and more.

Biostatistics
Gain expertise in statistical analysis of public health data, develop skills in problem definition and variable determination, learn when and how to use data in public health studies.

To support the well-being of individuals and communities, you need to understand the psychological, social, cultural, and biological aspects of human development and learning across the life span.

In the interdisciplinary bachelor's in human development, you work toward your long-term career goals by personalizing your course of study with a concentration in your specific area of interest.

Graduates are employed as behavioral specialists, at-risk youth counselors, child development consultants, program evaluators, academic advisors, and institutional research analysts.
