The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and the Bachelor of Arts in International Relations degree programs offered by the Department of Political Science are the ideal opportunity for students looking to become more informed about the political reality of the world around them and enter the job market with the outstanding qualifications necessary to a career path in top tier corporate and public sector institutions.

Students majoring in political science must complete a 30-credit course of study. The subfields of political science include American politics, political philosophy, comparative politics, international relations, and a host of related fields such as policy studies, political geography, political economy, popular culture and the media, and studies of particular countries or regions. There is also considerable room for student choice within the major, as the department offers ample opportunities for independent study, honors theses, and internships. Students may also earn a 15-credit minor in Political Science.

Students majoring in international relations must complete the 36-credit course of study in courses that address a broad spectrum of cutting edge issues in contemporary global diplomacy and security, including international law and human rights, international political economy, geopolitics, regimes and institutions, the environment and technology, non-state actors, and regional studies that focus on the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Credits for internships in international relations, including internships abroad, with the United Nations, and in Washington, D.C., may be counted toward the major upon prior approval by the International Relations Program.

The Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies curriculum integrates classroom learning with real-world experience from day one, emphasizing development of global leadership skills. Central to the program are requirements that students reside in Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, China, Australia, and a New York-based final capstone semester, where students complete their senior thesis. From these countries, they will travel to Panama, Nicaragua, Morocco, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Turkey, India, Thailand, and Bali. LIU Global students typically complete at least four internships during their study.

M.F.A. in Creative Writing prepares students to both be professional writers in the world and to be visionary literary citizens. Situated in the heart of Brooklyn, LIU’s MFA in Creative Writing is an innovative creative writing program centered on world literature, multi-genre education, and publishing. Our applied MFA prepares students for careers in creative writing, academia, translation, and publishing. During their two-year residential program, students have the opportunity to study poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and translation, and thus receive a robust multi-genre education.

In our MFA’s publishing courses, students study directly with professionals at the heart of the publishing industry. During the course of their study, students learn about commercial, independent, and academic publishing with frequent guest literary agents, editors, and leaders from seminal national and international literary arts organizations. We also focus on the performative aspects of the writing industry including audiobooks, public performances and speaking, and adaptations. Students learn about the intersection between book publishing and popular and new media. Students also gain vital publishing industry experience through literary internships centered in New York City and through the practicum of editing LIU’s flagship literary journals.

The American Political Science Association has developed a broad description of the discipline. “Political Science,” it says, “is the study of governments, public policies and political processes, systems, and political behavior.” The profession’s sub-fields include American politics, political philosophy, comparative politics, international relations and a host of related fields such as policy studies, political geography, political economy, and studies of particular countries or geographic areas. Political scientists use a variety of approaches to examine the process, systems and political dynamics of all countries and regions of the world.

 There is also considerable room for student choice within the major, and the department offers ample opportunities for independent study, honors theses and internships. 

The Master of Science program in Pharmacology and Toxicology prepares students with the knowledge and abilities required for competitive technical positions in pharmacological research and testing, for participating in clinical trials, and for performing toxicological reviews and assessments in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as in academic and governmental research laboratories.

Additionally, graduates are well positioned to continue their studies in Ph.D. programs in pharmacology and other biomedical sciences, while other graduates may find the program ideal for improving their credentials toward gaining admission to medical school or other health professional programs.

Career opportunities and employment may include academic departments involved in research, development, and teaching. Rewarding careers are also possible in pharmaceutical companies, government laboratories and agencies including the Centers for Disease Control, The Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense and NASA. Opportunities also exist in areas involving the development of public policy, investment advising, patent law, and scientific writing and editing.

There is excellent potential for rapid advancement in this field due to the importance of the discipline to the drug industry, regulatory agencies, and to the general public.

Graduates of the program have either joined academic departments by securing doctoral fellowships in prestigious laboratories, or obtained jobs in industry. Others have used their degree to facilitate entry into medical and pharmacy schools.

• Reviewing scientific documents and making recommendations

In addition to strong scientific background and analytical skills, the successful candidate will also need to possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and high ethical standards.

The program is registered by the New York State Department of Education. Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology that satisfies the academic and professional requirements specified by ASHA for the CCC-SLP, and are eligible to apply for licensure in SLP by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions. Students who wish to satisfy the New York State Education Office of Teaching requirements for Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) may also prepare for this certification as part of their graduate program. Students demonstrating proficiency (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. This program will prepare students to work with individuals who are bilingual or speak a language other than English. The program partners with local community-based organizations to provide well-trained generalist practice social workers, prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities through a variety of methods.

In addition to preparing students for careers in social work, the program also prepares students who seek to pursue a graduate degree in social work and in other related fields. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for advanced standing in a graduate program in Social Work. With Advanced Standing, students only need to complete one-year of graduate study to earn their master degree.
