Respiratory care professionals treat patients who exhibit a range of diverse health issues including asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer as well as those who are having respiratory problems related to trauma, strokes, heart attacks, and premature birth.

Through classroom, laboratory and diverse clinical site practicum, students develop the necessary health care knowledge, bedside skills and problem-solving abilities to serve the health needs of patients from newborns to the elderly. They are prepared to manage both acute and chronic diseases that affect the cardiopulmonary system as well as trauma, sub-acute disease, and public health issues from asthma to tuberculosis.

The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.

Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.

The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psychosocial assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.

The 36 to 63-credit Master’s of Business Administration (number of credits is based on your undergraduate coursework) provides the knowledge base and skills that enable professionals to become leaders in business by offering a comprehensive program which meets the needs of an ever-changing, global business environment. The program is offered on a part-time basis during the evenings and weekends with 15- and 7-week semesters, to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals who are interested in advancing their careers. Physician assistants (PAs) provide medical care to patients under the supervision of physicians and surgeons. In practice, PAs perform a large percentage of the same care patients receive when they visit a doctor, including taking histories, performing physical exams, ordering labs and diagnostic studies, making initial diagnoses and formulating treatment plans, prescribing medication, performing procedures, and assisting in surgery. PAs may specialize in any area of medicine or surgery and enjoy lateral mobility, meaning that they may move from specialty to specialty without additional formal training.

LIU Brooklyn's Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program was the first in the region to be approved by the New York State Education Department. Successful completion of the program enables the candidate to register as a physician assistant and to sit for the National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Many of today’s most pressing social problems relate directly to problems in behavior. Violence (at home or on the street), drug addiction and poor interpersonal relationships are just some examples of the types of issues explored in the field of psychology. Psychologists strive first to describe, understand and explain behavioral problems and also to contribute solutions to such problems, through careful collection of data, analysis of data, and development of intervention strategies.

The B.A. in Psychology provides students with a broad understanding of the principles that explain human behavior and interaction.  The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preparing new nurses through two tracks:

• Full-time day track
• Accelerated 2nd-degree track—a 16-month program for students who already hold a baccalaureate degree in another field. This track offers admission in the Summer, Spring, and Fall. 
• Integrate knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences when providing professional nursing care to diverse individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations throughout the life span and across the continuum of healthcare settings.
• Identify principles of leadership and management for quality improvement and patient safety to the delivery of high quality professional nursing care within current cultural, economic, organizational, and political perspectives.

B.S. in Marketing prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of marketing functions within business and not-for-profit organizations. Marketing involves the study of new product development, marketing research, analysis of distribution systems, determination of pricing policies, promotion of products and ideas, business relationships, and predictions of consumer behavior.

As a marketing major, you will develop the creative, analytical and communication skills necessary to succeed in the field. You also will develop competencies in product and service promotion, distribution, buyer behavior and market research. Marketing courses focus on integrating theory and practical applications through the use of cases, computer simulations, and through hands-on field projects.
