Instrumental Performance - Guitar
In 1968, Hartt graduated its first guitar major and over the years the program has expanded to offer a Master of Music, Graduate Professional Diploma, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma.

At Hartt, you will participate in masterclasses given by world renowned performers. Past guest artists include Oscar Ghiglia, Antigoni Goni, and Andrew York.

Our graduates presently hold or have held guitar positions at various prestigious institutions, including New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, The Longy School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory.

Our alumni and present students have won or been finalists in the Alirio Diaz International Guitar Competition in Venezuela, Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Competition, MTNA competition, and Appalachian State Guitar Competition.

Music History
As an important feature of our curriculum is flexible elective courses that are suited to your interests and needs, our electives are often designed with our current students in mind. To that end, courses offered within the last two years have included opera history, string quartet literature, C.P.E. Bach, pre-tonal theory and analysis, medievalism in modern media, cognitive psychology, and critical editing; students may also take courses on jazz and African-American musical traditions in the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division.

In addition to our rigorous coursework, you will participate in a number of our performance organizations, including our Baroque ensemble, the Collegium Musicum. Hartt’s wide collection of early instruments, including recorders, Renaissance lutes and flutes, harpsichords, clavichord, baroque bows, shawms, and sackbuts, are available for use and provide you with an active and creative learning environment.
Within the music history major, you will choose between scholarship and research emphasis or performance practices emphasis. Our scholarship and research emphasis systematically investigates various elements of music in written papers, employing a rigorous scholarly approach. Our performance practice emphasis combines your interest in performing with the study of treatises, earlier performance techniques, ornamentation, and related issues.

Percussion
Our philosophy regarding percussion education is to be as all-inclusive as possible. As a Hartt student, you will typically study solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire, as well as improvisation, drum-set, and percussion instruments from other cultures (particularly from Africa, the Middle East, Cuba, Brazil, and Trinidad). We routinely hire guest teachers with focused areas of expertise in order to compliment our more traditional offerings. As a result, Hartt percussion alumni have been very successful in finding a variety of jobs throughout the country.

Composition
Diverse areas of expertise and interests represented among the faculty allow students to find the guidance they need to express their individuality through their music. Through studies in traditional concert music, film music, music for the theatre, improvisation, and advanced modern compositional techniques, students are exposed to an ever-changing array of music.
The composition department is a community that fosters cooperation between its students and faculty. Through once-a-week composition seminars, students and faculty members have the opportunity to discuss each other's music and to hear music by visiting composers. Students take an introductory composition course during their first two semesters and then have three years of individual lessons with faculty composers. This assures a regular, disciplined course of study.

Radiologic Technology

Radiologic Technology is a dynamic, fast-paced profession that combines the use of sophisticated medical imaging technology with compassionate care of the ill and injured. As a radiologic technician, you’ll be a member of a team that helps diagnose and treat all types of pathologies and conditions.

Multimedia Web Design and Development

The Multimedia Web Design and Development (MWDD) program is where you learn how to build and design websites that are innovative, attractive, and easy to use, and create motion graphics, animation, and multimedia content for mobile applications and computer games. Our small class sizes give you the chance to really get to know your professors. You can count on them to give you academic advice, as well as access to internship opportunities.
The MWDD major gives you great flexibility with unrestricted electives allowing you to incorporate your outside interests and goals into the major. You take classes in communication, computer science, and layout design

Music Theory
The Music Theory program at The Hartt School is designed to prepare you for graduate studies, teaching, or a research career. Our students study tonal harmony, tonal analysis, modern techniques, tonal counterpoint, modal counterpoint, keyboard harmony, score reading, orchestration, and music theory pedagogy.

The diverse backgrounds of Hartt’s Music Theory faculty allow theory majors to approach music from multiple angles, gain appreciation and respect for varied perspectives, and ultimately shape an intellectual approach to music theory that best suits them.

Organizational Psychology
The integration of theory and practice in our MSOP program prepares you to lead, manage, and/or consult with dynamic and diverse organizations operating in a global environment. Courses are taken in the Department of Psychology, School of Communication, and Barney School of Business, students develop unique analytical skills and accumulate knowledge from the differing perspectives of these schools of thought.
