Management
Learn fundamental principles of organizations, the nature and capabilities of people, how to function well in a team, and the methods involved in analyzing and solving managerial problems. Build on those lessons with an internship that enhances your interpersonal and leadership skills.

Guitar

In 1968, Hartt graduated its first guitar major and over the years the program has expanded to offer a Master of Music, Graduate Professional Diploma, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Artist Diploma.

At Hartt, you will participate in masterclasses given by world renowned performers. Past guest artists include Oscar Ghiglia, Antigoni Goni, and Andrew York.

Our graduates presently hold or have held guitar positions at various prestigious institutions, including New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, The Longy School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory.

Our alumni and present students have won or been finalists in the Alirio Diaz International Guitar Competition in Venezuela, Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition, American String Teachers Competition, MTNA competition, and Appalachian State Guitar Competition.

In addition to classical guitar training, you will also experience chamber music, guitar pedagogy, guitar literature, lute and baroque guitar tablature, and electric guitar styles. Our goal is to graduate students who are well-prepared to enter the fields of concert performance and college teaching. Towards that end we hold weekly performance classes that are required of all performance majors. In addition, every year, we sponsor six to eight public performances as part of our Evening with Guitar concert series.  This provides our students the opportunity to develop and refine their performance skills in a professional setting.

Performing Arts Management
As a performing arts management major at Hartt, you will learn the skills to have a career in the performing arts of the commercial music business.  You are given the opportunity to concentrate in many different areas of management and business including the recording industry, touring, arts marketing, fundraising, for and non-profit management and entrepreneurial studies. Not only will you explore a variety of current problems inherent to the industry through classroom discussions, guest speakers, case studies and assignments, but also attend conferences and go on field trips to Connecticut arts institutions, as well as those in Boston and New York.

Core classes give you practical and hands-on experience including Arts Management Practicum and Internship, which enhance your leadership, teamwork and networking skills, while helping you grow personally and professionally. Recent students interned at The Bushnell Center for the Arts, The Newport Jazz Festival, Live Nation, City Parks Foundation, Tanglewood, Motema Records and many more.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree, your career-ready skills will be put to work at talent agencies, recording studios, performing arts centers, artist management companies, as well as professional dance and theatre companies.

Double Bass

At The Hartt School, you will join a tight-knit community of artists who are perfecting their craft. Through personal attention and mentorship from Hartt’s accomplished faculty members, you will develop innovative ideas and career ready skills. Learn about the double bass program at Hartt, including undergraduate and graduate admission and audition requirements and faculty information.

Double bass activities include

• Weekly private lessons (technical and musical development of traditional and contemporary techniques and repertoire, and orchestral music)
• Orchestra Repertoire Class (excerpts and the audition process)
• Scales/Technique Class (compliments the work done in private lessons on achieving technical mastery)
• Repertoire Class (explores all aspects of the double bass literature and history, by listening to recordings, looking at scores, and discussing various topics)

Health Sciences - Pre-Pharmacy

The BS/PharmD is for the academically outstanding student with strong, realistic motivation toward the pharmacy profession. Initial study at the University of Hartford allows you to complete the general education and basic science requirements for the BS in health science degree and the prerequisites necessary for pharmacy school.

The BS degree is awarded by the University of Hartford following the successful completion of the first year of graduate study. Students who are not in the accelerated program typically complete the BS degree in four years at the University of Hartford.

Jazz Studies

Offering a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music, the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz was founded by American jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean. As one of the nation’s premier jazz programs, Hartt strives to develop aspiring and skilled jazz musicians.

Through the curriculum, there is historical analysis, perspective, narratives on improvisation, and dialogue concerning the expression of jazz music.  Using these practices along with tutelage and cultivation, students will realize their choices to create an individual style.

Saxophone
The study of saxophone at The Hartt School offers a competitive, collegial environment for students to challenge one another, fosters artistic growth, and instill the necessary skills to achieve success in the musical world.

Chemistry

UHart’s Chemistry Department offers major programs designed to give you a thorough foundation in all areas of chemistry, and is a great place to study if you are planning for a career in chemistry, biochemistry, the medical profession, environmental law, forensics, food science, chemical physics, or any other related discipline.

With its heavy concentration in science and mathematics, our Bachelor of Science in Chemistry prepares you for positions in the chemical industry or for graduate study in specialized areas of chemistry.

The podiatry program requires four years of combined academic and clinical training leading to the DPM degree, which is a prerequisite for licensure eligibility in the United States. The New York College of Podiatric Medicine provides students with an accredited four-year professional podiatry curriculum.
