Electromechanical Engineering Technology
Explore the technical side of engineering through the CEET program. Expand your skills through and design the program for your goals and interest through various coursework and five technical specialty electives. With this flexibility, you have the choice to advance programming skills or expand knowledge in areas like data acquisition and automated systems. Biomedical Engineering
The biomedical engineering program prepares you to work in today’s healthcare industry and learn how to support professionals, hospitals, and medical offices by creating and maintaining important tools and resources. If you love to read and write, the Department of English and Modern Languages is where you will learn critical reading, organizational skills, and research techniques. Plus you’ll learn how to use your imagination in our writing-intensive classes! Our faculty are award-winning teachers and published authors who take an interest in your work and get to know you well in our small class sizes.

We offer two areas of emphasis to choose from:

The Creative Writing emphasis helps you learn good research, writing, editing and storytelling skills while producing your own stories, poems, plays, critical and personal essays.

In the Literature emphasis, you study literature in historical and cultural contexts and learn how the works of generations of writers explore unifying ideas, ideals, achievements, and aspirations.

Music Vocal Performance

At Hartt, growth in technique and musicianship, guided by distinguished faculty, is the focus of vocal study. Our rich undergraduate and graduate course of study includes private voice lessons, coachings, vocal pedagogy, language and diction study, opera stagecraft, and our invigorating core music curriculum.

Printmaking

You will learn the basics of the major techniques and must achieve mastery in lithography and etching. Black-and-white and color processes are taught in all media within the program. You are also encouraged to pursue other areas of the printmaking curriculum, such as relief, monotype, letterpress printing, and book arts. The work will lead to your senior exhibition and help prepare you for graduate school or a career in printmaking and the arts.

Lectures, demonstrations, and workshops with well-known visiting artists and master printers further enhance the curriculum, including the annual Hartford Print Workshop. This workshop brings in artists who work with students and master printers to create editioned prints in the HAS printmaking studios.

Jazz Studies
Offering a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music, the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz was founded by American jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean. As one of the nation’s premier jazz programs, Hartt strives to develop aspiring and skilled jazz musicians.

Through the curriculum, there is historical analysis, perspective, narratives on improvisation, and dialogue concerning the expression of jazz music.  Using these practices along with tutelage and cultivation, students will realize their choices to create an individual style.

Art History
The art history Bachelor of Arts program offers students a wide variety of courses that cover art from around the globe—Western, African, Mesoamerican, and Asian—and creative traditions in painting, sculpture, graphic arts, decorative arts, ritual objects, architecture, photography, design, performance, experimental media, and eco-art.

Special courses in museum and exhibition practices, in writing and research, and in the effects of cultural contact, migrations, and globalization on artistic traditions are offered to art history majors. Students are urged to study abroad and often take advantage of programs in Europe, Africa, Australia, and elsewhere around the globe.

Music Education
Hartt's Music Education Division offers you one of the nation's most comprehensive courses of study. Combining the rigors of conservatory training with a solid foundation in music education, the program prepares you for a career as an elementary and secondary school music educator. In addition to general music, choral music, wind and string instrumental pedagogy, music education majors receive training in such methodologies as Kodály, Suzuki, and Orff.

As an undergraduate, you will pursue a four-year instrumental or vocal emphasis. Students interested in jazz (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone) can pursue a double major in Music Education and Jazz Studies (5-year program). Please note that students interested in this double major must perform a jazz and classical audition because they will receive private instruction in both areas.
