Majors and minors study how different local, national and regional cultures interact within Asia and beyond. The program draws on the strengths of specialists in anthropology, art history, English, Chinese and Japanese language, foreign literature, history, music, philosophy, politics and international relations, sociology and criminal justice. Students may major or minor in the program, with an Honors option also available. Asian Studies complements a host of other majors, including Chinese and Japanese language, history, international relations, political science and international business. The program encourages students to further deepen cultural and linguistic engagement through study abroad.

Our language classes cover all social situations from informal to formal occasions with solid training in honorifics and skills for both academic and business presentations. Join the many students who have already decided to make what is certainly one of the world’s most interesting languages a part of their undergraduate experience as a Japanese studies major.

Study in Kobe, Tokyo, Fukuoka or Akita – four very different parts of the country with diverse experiences to offer. Join one of our dynamic student clubs to share your interests with others, whether it be martial arts, language study with native speakers or a deeper engagement with the Japanese art forms of manga, anime and videogames. Our Japanese studies program allows you to specialize in film, literature or pop culture while advancing your language skills and learning more about current events. The University of Delaware School of Nursing offers several opportunities for students to become a registered nurse (RN). There are three types of undergraduate programs:

• Traditional Undergraduate Program: The traditional undergraduate program is designed for beginning students of nursing, including high school graduates and change-of-major students. This is a four-year on-campus program and students are directly admitted to the Nursing program, beginning their Nursing curriculum as freshman.
• Accelerated Degree Program: The accelerated degree program is a 17 month on-campus program designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
• RN to BSN: The RN to BSN program is an on-line program designed for registered nurses who want to attain a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

This sequential curricular development will allow students to build a solid foundation for nursing practice. To support the student experience, a state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratory and resource center allow students to pursue independent and collaborative coursework.

By majoring in environmental studies, you will be able to gain the skills and the broad perspective that will help you balance the needs of people with the conservation of precious resources. You will first develop a strong background in both the scientific and social aspects of our relationship with the environment. Then you will deepen your knowledge in one of three concentrations, listed below as Areas of Study. Among other options, the environmental advocacy concentration can prepare you to go on to law school, and the environmental planning and design concentration can lead to work in many practical fields. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the employment environmental scientists and specialists will grow 8% from 2019-2029, faster than the average for all occupations. Your training in both science and policy will prepare you for companies, governments and nonprofit organizations developing strategies, policies and approaches to solve environmental issues and reduce environmental impact.

Physiology is the study of how living organisms function under normal conditions and is a foundational component of many careers in the health sciences. The BS in Human Physiology is intended for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine, biomedical research, industry or other allied health professions for which a comprehensive knowledge of human physiology is required. The curriculum includes core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics along with extensive upper level courses in human anatomy and physiology. The major is particularly suited for those who plan to continue their studies at the post-baccalaureate level through graduate or professional training. By selecting from a list of recommended electives, students can easily achieve all of the necessary prerequisite requirements for admission into medical and dental schools and be prepared to take the applicable entrance exams. Alternatively, those interested in other careers within the health sciences can choose among a broader list of electives that further enhance their understanding of human health and disease. The curriculum is intentionally demanding with the goal of providing the next generation of leaders in the health sciences with foundational knowledge in human physiological function at the molecular, cellular and organism level.

The Fine Arts Program at UD—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—combines the best of creative research and hands-on experimentation.  Students have the opportunity to experience printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, video, photography, animation and drawing. After completing core courses, students have the freedom to choose their own pathway of study that enables them to develop into an active creative force; essentially our students are empowered to impact culture in a meaningful way and positively change the world.

Central to this student-centered approach is our one-on-one advising—all fine art majors and minors work in direct contact with our professionally active faculty through studio and lecture courses. Additionally, students engage with diverse communities through dynamic visiting artist talks, highly regarded study abroad courses, productive internships and frequent field trips to major art centers. Individual or shared studios are available for advanced students.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

The B.A. in Art—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—provides the same foundation in art making through its Core studio courses that B.F.A. students receive along with additional upper level studio courses to further hone the student’s artistic skills. It encourages an interdisciplinary approach with many students earning a minor or second major from departments across the college and university. The B.A. provides an opportunity for students to develop highly personal portfolios that can incorporate art and design with work from other disciplines with very marketable results. The B.A. also reflects developments in Fine Art involving more environmentally and socially engaged art practices, technology or performance-based work, as well as artworks emphasizing academic research.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.
