The B.S. in Applied Mathematics allows students to gain depth in mathematics as well as one of twenty-one areas of application in science and engineering such as Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Physics and Statistics. This degree prepares students planning a career in a field requiring strength in mathematics as well as in an area of application. Students considering a double major in Mathematics and a related area are advised to consider this program.

Physicists investigate the fundamental properties of our physical world and develop a quantitative understanding of its phenomena with the scale of the investigations ranging from the sub-atomic to the transgalactic. Physics and astronomy have had a profound impact on how we perceive the universe and our position in it. The Secondary Science Education major at the University of Delaware offers students interested in teaching middle or high school science the opportunity to study their scientific area of interest—like physics—while also learning about and practicing the best teaching methods.

The marketing major prepares you to serve a vital role as the liaison between businesses and consumers.

As a marketer, you will identify wants and needs among diverse groups of people, select target markets and develop strategies for new and existing products. You will formulate plans for pricing, distributing and promoting these products and services while utilizing knowledge of branding, advertising, social media and new product development. This work requires careful analysis, creativity and action to tailor products and services to meet consumers’ needs.

The Blue Hen Marketing Club provides resources and opportunities for real-world experience to students interested in marketing. Information Systems is an evolving scientific area of study that bridges the gap between business and computer science.

Networks of computers extend human brainpower by creating modes of communication and record keeping that are at once more complex and more convenient than ever before. To be effective, these systems must aid and enhance our business, government and service organizations, which requires a careful understanding of the factors controlling human interactions, as well as the technical potential and limitations of computer systems.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers students a Bachelor of Science major in Information Systems (INSY-BS), which combines business and information technology subjects. The major addresses student demand for courses oriented toward the design of new software systems for business and consumer needs. Students enrolled in the major must fulfill a set of major courses along with 1) a set of business courses (referred to as the business core) and 2) a set of information systems courses (referred to as the information systems core).

The business core emphasizes management and marketing issues. Students are prepared for careers in management and financial matters through courses in accounting, finance, operations management, organizational behavior, and marketing.

The information core stresses the use of computing technology in solving business problems.

Course work includes technological problem solving and project management, as well as a selection of advanced computer science courses designed to prepare students for careers in programming, business telecommunication networks, system development, database systems, and software engineering.

Communication offers a strong theory- and research-based program coupled with skills training in oral communication, video production, broadcast journalism and public relations. Students also study intercultural communication, principles in advertising, media and children, politics and entertainment, advertising, persuasion, strategic communication, social media management, relationship skills and conflict management. This well-rounded curriculum prepares our graduates for a successful and dynamic career.

The Bachelor of Music in Music History and Literature provides a rigorous core of courses in the history and literature of Western music and offers opportunities for deeper study in related fields such as music theory, literature, anthropology, philosophy, history and foreign languages. The degree culminates with an extended senior thesis under the mentorship of a member of the music history faculty. This degree is aimed primarily at students preparing to attend graduate school in musicology, although it might be of interest to students who are planning a career in a non-teaching, non-performing area of music such as ensemble management and representation, information sciences or educational media.

Opportunities are available for supported summer research and independent study. Also available to our students is the opportunity for exploration of the school’s extensive collection of period instruments in our Early Music Ensembles, which gives students a chance to perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and Baroque Eras.

A multilingual brain is more agile and better able to solve problems and conflicts. Language learners demonstrate superior cognitive performance throughout their lives.

Over half of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual, while only one in five U.S. citizens speaks a language other than English. Knowledge of other languages and cultures gives our graduates a competitive advantage in any career, and is highly valued in international business and professional communities. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths in teaching, entertainment and media, government, travel, financial services or international business. Some students enter careers with international or non-governmental organizations such as the International Red Cross or the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy and college teaching.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary program with its basic content in the social sciences and humanities. The B.A. prepares a student to develop a complex and critical assessment of the social, political, intellectual and artistic dimensions of the African American and African Diasporic experience through comparative analyses of articles, books, film, art and archival material, to effectively communicate that knowledge orally and in written work and to apply their skills in projects that provide service to black communities in the region. This knowledge and these skills may be effectively incorporated into virtually any career path the student chooses.
