Plato coined the word 'philosopher' to refer to a 'lover of wisdom'. As a discipline, philosophy seeks to understand the world and our relation to it by examining and scrutinizing the foundational assumptions that lie behind our everyday thinking. Philosophy asks big questions: What fundamentally exists? Are there any moral truths? Is free will possible? Can machines think? What is a scientific law? Which forms of government are best? Is there a God? But perhaps more than any specific set of questions or ideas, philosophy is about the love of critical and creative thinking, intelligent discussion and cogent argument. Since these skills are vital in every field, philosophical tools and training can be useful for students of virtually any subject. Students with a special interest in legal careers have the option of selecting the department’s philosophy and law concentration. Philosophy majors tend to score highest on the GRE, MCAT and LSAT exams, and many have gone on to successful careers in a variety of fields.

Studying environmental science at UD, you will learn how natural processes shape the natural environment and how humans impact nature. If you are passionate about the outdoors, the environmental science major can help you find solutions to environmental issues like habitat loss, sustainable development, water quality, biodiversity, climate change, renewable energy, and more. Environmental science takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying the atmosphere, ocean, earth, and ecosystems, which you then develop into a specialty through studying one of the concentrations listed below. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, environmental science jobs are predicted to grow 8% faster than the overall job market average between 2019 and 2029.

Be part of solving one of humanity’s most critical grand challenges — the global demand for food and fiber.  With the population expected to grow by 2.3 billion by 2050, feeding the world will require raising overall food production by 70 percent.  You will become knowledgeable in animal nutrition, health, behavior, reproduction, physiology, genetics and animal management. You will play an important role in education and the conservation of non-domesticated animals housed in zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. You will also contribute to a greater understanding of the complex relationships between domestic animals (livestock and pets), wild animals, humans and our shared environment.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

?The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

The marketing major prepares you to serve a vital role as the liaison between businesses and consumers.

As a marketer, you will identify wants and needs among diverse groups of people, select target markets and develop strategies for new and existing products. You will formulate plans for pricing, distributing and promoting these products and services while utilizing knowledge of branding, advertising, social media and new product development. This work requires careful analysis, creativity and action to tailor products and services to meet consumers’ needs.

The Blue Hen Marketing Club provides resources and opportunities for real-world experience to students interested in marketing. The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees. The Bachelor of Arts in Music with Music Management Concentration provides broad coverage of music combined with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests. This program provides opportunities designed to prepare students for administrative careers within the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors of the music industry. A 4+1 program option is offered through the Bachelor of Arts in Music Management, which combines the liberal arts music major with a master’s degree in Business Administration completed in the fifth year of study.?

The Department of Art Conservation is an international leader committed to educating professional conservators skilled in the examination, analysis, treatment and care of cultural heritage. The department consists of an undergraduate and master’s program in art conservation.

Connecting the arts, humanities and sciences, an undergraduate degree in art conservation prepares students for graduate-level study in the preservation of material culture, historic preservation, museum studies, library science and other related fields. This program, one of only five in the nation, offers students the opportunity to work with leading conservators and scientists while studying a range of cultural materials from archaeological to indigenous and contemporary from the UD Special Collections & Museum and collecting repositories worldwide.  Since 1971, our graduates have preserved iconic treasures from the Declaration of Independence to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the decorative interiors of the Forbidden City and most recently the George Floyd Memorial. Their work engages communities, strengthens cultural understanding and fosters knowledge and joy.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.

The UD Visual Communications Program—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—has an outstanding reputation. The VC degree builds on our two-year Core curriculum through a series of courses intended to inspire inquiry in the art of communication design and to impart applicable skills in various design methodologies.

Our program engages students in an educational experience where they learn by doing. In our small classes students have intense studio experiences, exploring their creativity, developing skills, and designing across all media. Through internships, study abroad programs, field trips and visiting artists and designers, our graduates leave school already plugged-in to their career path.
