The field of agriculture and natural resources needs generalists to educate others, and address real-world problems of feeding the world and protecting the planet. With a working farm right on main campus, students have unparalleled access to a 350-acre classroom, where they gain practical experience by actively testing their knowledge in real-world settings. Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies

By majoring in environmental studies, you will be able to gain the skills and the broad perspective that will help you balance the needs of people with the conservation of precious resources. You will first develop a strong background in both the scientific and social aspects of our relationship with the environment. Then you will deepen your knowledge in one of three concentrations, listed below as Areas of Study. Among other options, the environmental advocacy concentration can prepare you to go on to law school, and the environmental planning and design concentration can lead to work in many practical fields. The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the employment environmental scientists and specialists will grow 8% from 2019-2029, faster than the average for all occupations. Your training in both science and policy will prepare you for companies, governments and nonprofit organizations developing strategies, policies and approaches to solve environmental issues and reduce environmental impact.

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science is designed for students who wish to combine advanced study of the Spanish language with a comprehensive background in Political Science and International Relations. The Spanish coursework included in the Spanish and History major will enable students to communicate with people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and foster understanding between cultures in our global society. The required coursework in Political Science exposes students to the theories, institutions and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. Environmental and Resource Economics applies economic principles to the many and varied environmental and natural resource challenges facing our society today and in the future. In this major, you will study how human decisions impact our environment and natural resources, including issues involving land use, water supply, water quality, air quality, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Latin American and Iberian Studies focuses on the history, geography, politics, literature, arts and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Our courses cover a wide range of topics including indigenous cultures, colonialism, nationalism, liberalism and globalization as well as problems of gender, race and economic inequality. Latin American and Iberian Studies prepares students with the practical and theoretical tools they need to study and work in the globalized arena of the 21st century. Students majoring or minoring in Latin American and Iberian Studies are required to acquire competency in either Spanish or Portuguese, going beyond the minimum requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The sociology major offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems.
