Medical diagnostics is a clinical-oriented science program that incorporates the basic science courses required for admission to medical school with medical-related courses that impact on the diagnosis and therapy of disease. This major prepares students who plan to pursue postgraduate study in health-related areas immediately upon graduation, including careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, and physician assistant.

Students with the goal of attending Medical School should visit UD's Pre-Med website for advising and admission information. There are two distinct pathways by which students can gain admission to a professional school. One is open to all majors and requires a basic knowledge of science and mathematics. Students taking this option are evaluated by the Health Science Advisement and Evaluation Committee (HSAEC), which writes a University of Delaware recommendation to medical institutions of the student's choice.

Freshmen enter as medical laboratory and diagnostics interest majors. In order to enter the medical diagnostics major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 3.00 GPA for the first four semesters, including successful completion of prerequisite courses in chemistry, biological sciences, physics and/or anatomy and physiology, and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.

?The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program in Actuarial Science leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major, with courses taught by faculty in the Departments of Economics, Finance, and Mathematical Sciences (among others), provides a strong background in actuarial science, including the satisfaction of all three actuarial science VEE requirements. Students graduating with this degree will be well prepared for the first two actuarial examinations, the foundation of an actuarial career.

Communication offers a strong theory- and research-based program coupled with skills training in oral communication, video production, broadcast journalism and public relations. Students also study intercultural communication, principles in advertising, media and children, politics and entertainment, advertising, persuasion, strategic communication, social media management, relationship skills and conflict management. This well-rounded curriculum prepares our graduates for a successful and dynamic career.

Comparative literature brings an international and intercultural perspective to bear on the study of literary themes, forms, movements and relations, as well as the interrelations between different national literatures and other disciplines. The Comparative Literature Program provides students the opportunity to design a course of study allowing specialization in two or more literatures.

Humankind’s cultural inheritance is encoded in the language of art. We offer students critical insights into this inheritance and the ways that art and cultural expression have developed over time and across the continents, deepening their knowledge of the past and the ways that the past shapes the present. We sharpen students’ visual skills, essential for success in an increasingly visual world. We develop students’ writing abilities, an essential foundation for any career. We spark students’ imaginations with images and objects that have endured centuries and have been worshipped or violated, stirred revolution or gone missing, delighted or outraged. In keeping with the university’s global mission, we offer courses in American (including Native American, African American and Latin American), European, African, Asian and Islamic art and architecture. Through the study of the full range of artistic creativity, we challenge students to become citizens of the world.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

The UD Visual Communications Program—one of three undergraduate art and design degrees offered at UD—has an outstanding reputation. The VC degree builds on our two-year Core curriculum through a series of courses intended to inspire inquiry in the art of communication design and to impart applicable skills in various design methodologies.

Our program engages students in an educational experience where they learn by doing. In our small classes students have intense studio experiences, exploring their creativity, developing skills, and designing across all media. Through internships, study abroad programs, field trips and visiting artists and designers, our graduates leave school already plugged-in to their career path.

From heart-rate monitors and refrigerators to laptops and mobile phones, computerized gadgets are everywhere. More and more of these gadgets are communicating and coordinating through networks to massive cloud computing centers that are distributed around the world.

Not only do computer engineers design computers and digital equipment, but they also design software that runs on the computers and develop algorithms that are implemented by the software.

UD electrical and computer engineering graduates pursue exciting, rewarding, and successful careers. On average, 70–80% of graduates with a Bachelor of Computer Engineering degree choose employment in private industry, government laboratories and agencies, and non-profit research centers. Approximately 15–20% of computer engineering graduates choose to continue their education toward a master’s or Ph.D. degree, and some graduates will opt to attend medical, law, or business school. Students who earn advanced degrees in engineering usually pursue a career in advanced research in industry or academia.

Chemistry involves the study of solids, liquids, and gases and the transformations they undergo in combination with each other. Chemists engage in observation, analysis and experimentation. They break natural substances down into their components, replicate in the laboratory chemical processes that occur in the physical world and create substances to fulfill specific needs. Chemical discoveries play an important role in helping us understand the world around us. Biochemistry, the study of chemical compounds and processes that occur in living organisms, has emerged as a field with growing impact on our ability to diagnose and treat diseases in animals, plants and humans.
