The Global Studies major enables students to succeed in an increasingly globalized society by exposing them to the political and cultural foundations of global issues. Our majors develop an analytical approach to critical issues that appear across national boundaries and cultural regions — examining them from a variety of disciplines. This integrated interdisciplinary program of study prepares majors for a broad range of career paths including government and international business or in international health, humanitarian, environmental, development and other types of non-governmental agencies.

Become an effective economics teacher by strengthening your knowledge of both education and economics. Study how markets work. Learn what is produced, how it is produced, and how income is distributed. Explore subjects such as:

• The role and impact of international trade
• The effect of monopolies on the economy
• The problems of unemployment and inflation

Your studies will provide you with a framework for evaluating policy to determine whether they help improve the quality of people’s lives. You will be equipped to help design solutions for society’s economic problems.

You will also learn how to turn your knowledge into effective, engaging lessons for secondary students that will help them develop the skills they need to graduate as economically literate and flourishing citizens.

Health Behavior Science is the study of how individual (e.g., race, age, disability, knowledge), social (e.g., peer-groups), and environmental (e.g., access to parks, worksite wellness programs) factors shape our health and well-being across the lifespan. We work to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the burden of disease through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs to change specific health behaviors for individuals and/or target populations. Students are also required to complete a minor in an approved area of expertise or complete the Health and Disability concentration to provide additional focused skills that enhance their job competitiveness. Students pursuing this major are well prepared for careers in health promotion and education, community health, worksite wellness, health coaching, personal training, and advanced graduate programs including health promotion/public health, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistant, and accelerated nursing programs. The program culminates with an internship experience that enhances the school to work transition.

There is a global need for professionals trained to provide critical social services to children, adults and families from diverse backgrounds—counseling, educating, coordinating and advocating for people.

Human Services (HS) majors develop the skills necessary to make a difference in the lives of children, adolescents, adults and families. Choosing from one of four concentrations, students can prepare to work in a variety of settings including non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, community programs, legal aid and advocacy organizations, where they can have a positive impact in fields such as youth development, disabilities, race relations, juvenile justice, substance abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention.

The English major offers a practical, multidisciplinary, and flexible array of courses that prepare students for a variety of career paths, including business, law, government, science, the arts, healthcare, education, and multi-media production. Our students learn to write clearly, to speak persuasively, and to read with care and precision, all qualities required for the leadership roles of many professions.

Have you ever considered how governments solve complex problems in areas like immigration, healthcare or environmental protection? Through political science you will learn about national and international politics and policymakers. You will also learn valuable skills in critical thought, oral and written communication and quantitative reasoning—the very skills most useful to employers in fields like law, business and journalism, not just politics.

All majors are required to complete three core courses: Introduction to American Politics, Introduction to Global Politics and Research Methods for Political Science. Beyond the core courses, you may choose to major in political science without a concentration or to specialize in one of three concentrations: American politics, global politics or public law. Political science is a flexible major that can complement your many other interests, a second major or minors and prepare you to engage an increasingly complex world.

Materials engineers play a vital role in solving today’s most challenging energy and environmental problems, and the outlook for materials science engineers is incredibly promising. Engineering is one of the highest-paying industries for college graduates, and the job sector of materials science engineers is expected to see substantial growth in the coming decades. Developments in nanotechnology and in the use of biomedical materials, high-performance textiles, composites and sustainable materials are creating job opportunities.

Materials Science and Engineering uses the principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering to develop better, safer and more sustainable materials. Everything we see and use is made from materials derived from the earth, and advanced materials are essential to nearly every modern technology. Materials engineers study the structures and properties of all types of materials – metals, polymers, ceramics, semiconductors and composites – and develop new ways to make them using nanotechnology and advanced manufacturing techniques.

Physiology is the study of how living organisms function under normal conditions and is a foundational component of many careers in the health sciences. The BS in Human Physiology is intended for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine, biomedical research, industry or other allied health professions for which a comprehensive knowledge of human physiology is required. The curriculum includes core courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics along with extensive upper level courses in human anatomy and physiology. The major is particularly suited for those who plan to continue their studies at the post-baccalaureate level through graduate or professional training. By selecting from a list of recommended electives, students can easily achieve all of the necessary prerequisite requirements for admission into medical and dental schools and be prepared to take the applicable entrance exams. Alternatively, those interested in other careers within the health sciences can choose among a broader list of electives that further enhance their understanding of human health and disease. The curriculum is intentionally demanding with the goal of providing the next generation of leaders in the health sciences with foundational knowledge in human physiological function at the molecular, cellular and organism level.

The Nutrition and Dietetics majors is for individuals who enjoy science and who believe that proper nutrition is a key aspect of health and well-being. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are qualified healthcare professionals trained to deliver evidence-based nutrition information and medical nutrition therapy to patients and to the public. The Nutrition and Dietetics major at the University of Delaware is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completion of a post-undergraduate accredited dietetic internship is the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Biological systems have many interacting units at the level of molecules, cells, organs and organisms. These complicated systems may be understood through the construction, analysis and computational simulation of mathematical models. Such models exploit both theory and observation to provide new predictions of the behavior of complex biological systems. The UD Quantitative Biology Program equips students with crucial mathematical tools along with the requisite scientific knowledge necessary to apply them in the life sciences.
