The BS in EE track provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of electrical engineering that would allow a graduate to function effectively in industry or continue on to graduate school. Students seeking admission into the BS Eng in EE program should be familiar with the admission and retention requirements of the College of Engineering – refer to the Office of Admissions.

The program combines theoretical study and scientific research methods with practical application through course work, field studies, community involvement, volunteerism and supervised independent research. Graduates of the Psychology department go on to careers in social services, mental health, education, research and business. Undergraduates also may choose to specialize in developmental disabilities.

The Psychology major augments a general liberal arts education and provides the basis for graduate training and careers in mental health, community development, education, research, and business and industry. The psychology curriculum acquaints students with the theoretical and empirical foundations of the major sub-fields of psychology (human development, basic mental and behavioral processes, the social context, and individual differences). The curriculum reflects the importance of scientific methods and provides students with hands-on experience in designing and conducting their own research; indeed, over the years, many of our students have been able to present their work at scientific conferences or have it published in academic journals. The curriculum also emphasizes the applications of psychological knowledge and skills in many areas of human functioning and gives students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills through a variety of placement opportunities on campus and in the community.

The first year of undergraduate study is devoted to developing writing skills and subjects in mathematics and science that serve as a foundation for upper level professional studies.

During the second year of study, students learn the principles of engineering mechanics, strength of materials and surveying.

Junior and senior year course work gives students a working knowledge of structural, environmental, geotechnical and transportation engineering. In addition to education in these four basic areas of civil engineering practice, advanced elective courses are available in each area during the senior year. Engineering design, concepts and computer aided engineering are integrated throughout the program.

Master of Science in Chemistry are offered in analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and polymer science. The UMass Lowell program provides opportunity for advanced study and research training in chemistry, both general and specialized. Provision also is made for the student to elect certain advanced subjects in related fields of mathematics, physics and engineering.

Mechanical engineers are problem solvers who help industries tackle important challenges such as developing new power and autonomous systems and advanced composite materials, as well as new methods of enhancing productivity and quality in manufacturing.

Students in the UMass Lowell mechanical engineering program learn how to apply fundamental principles with competence and sensitivity to meet the needs of industry and society. Our program emphasizes hands-on experience based in the design-build test methodology, in which students have the opportunity to build and test their theoretical designs. Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (https://www.abet.org), the mechanical engineering program features award-winning researchers and dedicated academics committed to providing students with a high-quality, comprehensive education.

Our students follow a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum that provides a solid science and engineering foundation in the fields of mechanics, fluid flow, heat transfer, energy, material science and dynamic systems. In addition, students take relevant courses in the humanities and social sciences.

The Master of Science program in Security Studies prepares students for careers in the rapid expanding field of cyber security, as well as weapons of mass destruction (CBRNE) and how to address threats to our critical infrastructure.

Students pursuing this area of concentration will develop competency and knowledge to manage the increasingly complex security challenges at regional and international airports, commuter and commercial railways, maritime ports, and roadways of the Commonwealth and the broader region. Emphasis is placed on integrating a “big picture” policy perspective with an understanding of sensor technologies, transportation security, systems engineering, human behavior, and intelligence analysis.

In this concentration, students learn how to write for an audience as a journalist, technical communicator, or a writer in other professional contexts. Students begin by taking Introduction to Professional Writing and continue with coursework that focuses on learning different aspects of professional writing. Journal and Professional Writing courses offer opportunities to learn about digital rhetoric, editing, publishing, grant writing, language and literacy, new media, reflective writing and visual rhetoric, just to name a few. All students in this track complete a portfolio that showcases their work in professional settings. That work often comes as part of an internship. Ultimately, the Journalism and Professional Writing concentration prepares students for writing situations and challenges beyond the classroom.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Marketing and Management option prepares you for a career as a pharmaceutical executive in management, sales or marketing. You’ll gain a valuable foundation in health sciences and business, which will prepare you for a variety of job opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, or continue your degree in the graduate program.  

A unique blend of business and scientific courses, the program prepares you to:

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering program at UMass Lowell offers an opportunity to pursue a broad range of interests in the fields of environmental and water resources engineering. The course of study is designed to meet an individual student's interests and career goals. Programs consist of civil engineering courses in

• Water and wastewater treatment,
• Environmental chemistry,
• Hydrology,
• Hydraulics,
• Air pollution control,
• Environmental law and policy,
• And may include courses from allied disciplines such as biological and health sciences, environmental studies, chemistry and work environment.

The UMass Lowell biology master's program fosters critical thinking and develops skills needed for independent laboratory study. This is accomplished, in part, by offering advanced lecture, seminar and laboratory courses.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers four options for the Master of Science in Biological Science:

• General Option offers flexibility so students can create a program that fits their educational and employment goals.
• Biotechnology Option focuses on training essential to employment in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
• Bioinformatics Option prepares students for academic and industry positions by providing interdisciplinary coursework emphasizing computational analysis and interpretation of biological datasets.
• Education, Communication and Outreach Option offers tailored coursework to prepare graduates to effectively communicate biological and scientific concepts using evidence-based approaches in their desired career paths.
