Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) is an academic discipline focused on understanding the development of individuals and families over time and across the ecological contexts in which they live. HDFS is an applied field of study and a versatile undergraduate major for students interested in working to enhance the lives of individuals and families through in-demand careers in settings that include early childhood education, schools, hospitals, and social service agencies. The HDFS curriculum offers students the opportunity to take courses from child and adolescent development to adult development and aging; family, parenting, and interpersonal relationships; classroom curriculum, observation, and assessment; and family programming, policy, and law. Courses in the HDFS major emphasize diverse experiences across age, gender, race and ethnicity, nationality, and socioeconomic status and prepare students for inclusive programming and practice.    

The Latin and Latin Teaching (LLT) option is designed to provide a good foundational liberal arts education centered on Latin and the Roman world, but it also includes specific elements that make it particularly appropriate for students who are considering careers teaching Latin in secondary schools after graduation. This option does not lead directly to state certification, which can be pursued during a fifth year of study in the Department of Education.

The graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders prepares students for professional practice with individuals who face communication challenges across the life span in any practice setting. Students complete a combination of required and elective courses and clinical practicum to apply theory to practice. Students complete a variety of practicum experiences in the university clinic as well as educational, rehabilitative, and private practice settings to enhance applied learning.  The Graduate Program of Study includes two full years of study, including two summers and J-term. 

The M.S. program provides students with the opportunity to develop a high degree of proficiency in a specialized research area. The program serves as a stepping stone to jobs in industry, graduate school, professional school, teaching careers, or for those who would like to strengthen their Chemistry knowledge. All students take coursework, carry out original research with a faculty mentor, and submit a thesis. The program has a focus on developing strong writing and oral communication skills. Financial support is typically available through a teaching assistantship.

You’ll work in a hands-on laboratory environment that reinforces traditional classroom learning while providing the real-world skills valued by employers. Seniors choose from a suite of professional technical electives and carry out a capstone design project tailored to their career objectives. You can complete an accelerated master’s program, participate on competitive teams at national competitions and gain hands-on experience at the UNH InterOperability Lab, where you’ll work alongside top tech companies to test their networking equipment before it hits the market. This ABET-accredited program has a high placement rate because of its great reputation among industry employers.

The M.A. in music with a conducting option offers both a broad knowledge of music and the opportunity for in-depth study of either instrumental or choral conducting. This master’s program offers graduate musical training and mastery of music history, theory and education, culminating in a conducting recital and/or significant performances with one of the major university orchestral, instrumental or vocal ensembles.

The Bachelor of Arts in Earth sciences is offered through the Department of Earth Sciences. This program provides students an opportunity to obtain a broad education and a general background in the Earth sciences with a greater degree of freedom in choosing electives than in the bachelor of science programs. Through careful choice of electives, students can prepare for business, industry, public service, the non-profit sector or graduate school.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a bachelor of science degree in communication sciences and disorders. 

Communication Sciences and Disorders is the profession devoted to helping people overcome disabilities of speech, language and hearing. The study of communication sciences and disorders may begin in the freshman or sophomore year. Students learn about speech, language, and hearing disorders through a combination of classroom instruction and observations in the on-campus Speech-Language-Hearing Center and elsewhere. The master of arts in liberal studies (M.A.L.S.) is an innovative, interdisciplinary graduate program, intended to promote broad intellectual comprehension and enrichment rather than vocational or professional training within a single field or discipline. Housed within the College of Liberal Arts but drawing its courses and instructors from across the University, the program makes available a diverse spectrum of offerings and a wealth of faculty expertise and resources. The program addresses the particular interests of students who seek to deepen their knowledge by designing their own challenging but flexible program of cross-disciplinary learning.

If you have graduated within the last five years with a Bachelor of Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better, you are eligible to apply for the advanced standing M.S.W. degree at UNH. Professional social workers make a difference in people’s lives, communities and society. An M.S.W. is a professional degree that will prepare you for work in fields such as healthcare, education, substance abuse, child welfare, employee assistance programs, policy and advocacy, and other human services and social welfare related areas.
