Fighting fires requires knowledge, strategy, expert technique, calm under pressure, and courage.

As a fire science major at the University of New Haven, you will be joining one of the largest, most comprehensive fire science programs in the country. You will learn the science of what gives a fire life, what keeps it burning, and the techniques and tactics to put it out. You will learn to battle blazes, lead teams, and prevent fires from starting in the first place. And, you’ll focus your career path by choosing one of two concentrations:

• Fire Administration: Learn fire department best practices and department command structure as you develop the skills needed to become a leader.
• Fire/Arson Investigation: Prepare for a career in fire investigation, arson/fraud detection, and code enforcement as you earn a minor in criminal justice.

Our facilities are state of the art. Your practical experience in them will include:

• Becoming familiar with modern fire-detection software and alarm panels
• Studying in the state-of-the-art fire/arson investigation lab, where live fires are produced for investigation
• Experimenting with flash and fire points in the fire dynamics lab
• Learning about and experiencing the systems and sprinkler heads used throughout the industry

Graphic design is an activity of visual communication; its study is the critical analysis between form and content. The BFA in Graphic Design examines communication through the use of words, symbols, and images, and explores the graphic designer’s ability to bring clarity and visual aesthetics to communication through an understanding of the means of production, theory, and design practice.

The introductory courses in the graphic design program concentrate on basic design vocabulary, composition, color perception, and drawing. The curriculum continues and progresses through semiotics and practical techniques associated with typography, illustration, problem-solving methodologies, and applied design projects in branding, way-finding, and advocacy. The BFA in Graphic Design prepares students for the professional environment of graphic design found in independent design studios, agencies, and corporations. Additionally, the rigorous course of study provides students with the foundation to continue with graduate studies in the field.

Program Outcomes

Students in this program will:

• Demonstrate the principles and elements of art and design.
• Illustrate how graphic design themes and styles have been influenced by historical events.
• Develop a body of cohesive artwork which aligns with personal professional goals.
• Formulate a personal creative research project in an area of interest and produce a successful thesis exhibition.

Within each program option described above, students may concentrate in industrial-human resources, organizational development, or conflict management. A concentration requires 12 credits of electives, which are counted as part of the 21 credits required in the elective option (Thesis, Internship/Practicum, or Approved Electives) selected by the student. If a concentration is selected, the student must notify the program coordinator as well as the Registrar. A concentration is not required if the student’s educational or career goals can best be met without this specialization.

Program Outcomes

• Students will master theory and techniques related to core areas of industrial-organizational psychology including talent identification and development, work motivation, training, human capital practices, organization and group behavior.
• Students will learn how to employ the knowledge gained through their classes to the workplace through supervised experiential learning opportunities such as internships, practicum, case studies, and applied research projects.
• Students will conduct applied organizational research and interpret research used to make business decisions.

A total of 45 credits is required of candidates for the master of arts degree in industrial/organizational psychology. Candidates for this degree must complete 24 credits of basic program requirements. Another 21 credits (including concentrations, program options, and electives) are chosen after consultation with the program coordinator in light of the student’s academic and professional goals. Students may not complete more than nine credits of electives until they have satisfied the basic requirements. Up to nine credits of electives may be taken in other departments, such as industrial engineering, economics, management, marketing, and public administration.

The bachelor of science in fire science is offered with a choice of two concentrations to allow the student to major in fire science and specialize in an area of interest. The concentration areas are fire/arson investigation and fire administration

Program Outcomes:

• To use the scientific method to determine the origin and cause of a fire.  Evaluate fire load, fire
• development and burn patterns to determine the intensity and progression of the fire and the impact of fire code deficiencies.
• Students should be able to effectively communicate in writing their findings and have them submitted for evaluation, approval and implementation.
• Students should be able to determine if a fire was accidental, natural, incendiary in nature or must be considered undetermined. Work with outside agencies to establish party, item or circumstances responsible for ignition scenario.
• Students should identify hazardous materials or other safety hazards and the appropriate course of mitigation necessary to render a fire scene reasonably safe to investigate.

Students earning a B.A. degree in communication with a concentration in film production and media entrepreneurship will build the knowledge and skills related to film production in addition to a solid grounding in communication entrepreneurial fundamentals.  Through coursework emphasizing writing, production, and distribution, as well as laboratory and available internship opportunities, students will learn to become competent and well-rounded film production professionals.

Students earning a B.A. degree in communication with a concentration in film production and media entrepreneurship are required to complete a total of 121 credits as follows.

As a political science major at the University of New Haven, you will develop an understanding of our complex political system and its players, and explore how and where you can make an impact.

You will have the opportunity to conduct data-driven projects with well-respected researchers, learn the craft of politics from real policymakers, become a part of the University’s award-winning Model United Nations team, explore the world through our study abroad programs to France, Japan, Germany, and England, and pursue a variety of internships in Washington, D.C., Hartford, and the New Haven area.

Studying political science can open up a wide range of job opportunities in government, business, the nonprofit sector, the legal system, and entrepreneurial occupations. The reason? As a chemical engineer, you will transform matter or energy into forms that benefit human beings. You might design clean energy solutions, do research and development in pharmaceuticals, or create new ways to feed the world’s growing population.

The foundation you will build in chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics – and your collaborations involving engineering disciplines such as computer science, and mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering – will prepare you to rise to the challenges that face both the modern-day chemical engineer and the world. Those challenges — hallmarks of the early 21st century — include environmental integrity, limited resources, and human safety.

As a Chemical Engineering major at the University of New Haven, you will:

• Learn to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

• Design and conduct experiments in state-of-the-art laboratories, then analyze and interpret data

The 12-credit community development concentration provides students with additional skills focused on the administration of both traditional and non-traditional programs and services. The concentration addresses planning, development, and evaluation of innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in the public and private human service sectors as well as in business and industry.

Program Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
• Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.
• Students demonstrate, at a professional level, applied intervention skills in the internship.

The program consists of 60 credits, 48 of which compose the core curriculum completed by all students, and 12 of which constitute one of three concentration areas: general, forensic mental health, or community development.

The University’s full-time MBA program, which is one of only two in Connecticut – and less than 30 across the U.S. – that offer concentrations that are STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) certified by the federal government, enables you to both master new skills through rigorous coursework and build a portfolio of experience through internships and real-world learning opportunities that will prepare you to excel.

Our program is a great choice for those who’ve recently completed an undergraduate degree or who are looking to continue their education straight out of college. The program’s schedule allows for students to complete the program in as few as 12 months for those who meet the criteria to waive the three business foundation courses, and carry a 12-credit hour load. Students who do not meet the waiver criteria may complete the program in less than two years.
