As technology continues to expand into every field and industry, from the environment to education to politics, the market for skilled hands-on technicians grows increasingly competitive. The Bachelor of Science in Applied Computing was designed to produce graduates who can perform programming, software engineering, graphic applications, networking, and operating systems management in a variety of environments, while at the same time promoting power skills such as business communications, ethics, and project management.

The applied nature of the degree implies that graduates will have the competencies to solve real-world business problems through the application of technology. Its curriculum puts a deeper focus on fundamental computer science, software engineering, tech security issues, computing solutions for business problems, and data management. A poll of industry representatives indicates that they see a skills gap in computer and information technology related positions which the multidisciplinary focus of this degree would fill.

Everyone is part of multiple social groups. Your local community, your ethnic group, your religious organization, your state, your club or team—these are all examples of groups to which you might belong. The Sociology major at UWM offers students a chance to better understand these groups and the people within them. Students explore the social causes and consequences of human behavior, including topics such as political movements, population shifts, housing patterns, racism, gender inequality, the legal system, the medical profession, crime, families, sexuality, workplace organization, food cultures, and more.

The School Psychology concentration incorporates the scientist-practitioner model and provides a concrete link between theory, research, and practice. The program prepares students for employment in school and mental health settings. Students are prepared to provide psychological services to children, adolescents, and families; to conduct research; and to empirically evaluate the efficacy of their psychoeducational interventions and assessment procedures.

UWM students interested in pursuing advanced knowledge about the varied cultures, histories, languages, and origins that are included within Latinx populations have three different programs to choose from, including a major and two different certificates.

UWM students in the Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latinx Studies (LACUSL) major learn about the many different histories, cultures, and modern issues of Latinx peoples from all three regions - Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. It is among a small handful of programs nationwide to explore both Latinx communities in the U.S. as well as those in Latin America and the Caribbean; most programs focus on one or the other. Coursework spans several departments, including history, sociology, the arts, political science, anthropology, languages and literature, giving students many different lenses through which to look.

Marketing is a key factor contributing to the success of any business organization. It is the dynamic and creative process of the development, pricing, promotion, and distribution of products and services to satisfy customer and organizational objectives. Effective marketing requires an integration of eclectic knowledge and the skills pertinent to understanding consumer behavior, planning and analyzing marketing research data, thinking strategically, and managing people.

Students learn how marketing supports an organization's objectives; how to examine consumer motivation and behavior; how to price, promote, and distribute products and services; and how to plan and analyze market research data to make good decisions.

Graduates of the marketing major find an exciting and broad spectrum of career opportunities in brand/product management, industrial selling, retailing, sales management, advertising, marketing research, customer-service management, and other areas.

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program provides an innovative curriculum to meet a range of professional needs and interests. The program trains students in study design, appropriate use of statistical and computational techniques, and interpretation of data analysis results arising from public health and biomedical research. Students learn both classical and modern statistical methods and apply their statistical skills and knowledge to solve "big data” problems. They have the opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects, such as discovering genetic causes of common diseases, developing statistical algorithms to monitor treatment efficacy, and reducing medical costs through electronic health record.

Biology is the study of life. Biologists analyze organism functions at the cellular and molecular levels using genetics, biochemistry, and microscopy. They also study interactions between organisms and with the environment by examining behavior, morphology, physiology and genetics. Students can take a broad curriculum within Biological Sciences or focus on specific areas, such as ecology, evolution and behavior, cell and molecular biology, or microbiology.

Studies in Biological Sciences have applications across many areas including agriculture, medicine, and the environment. Biological Sciences is a popular choice for students preparing for careers in healthcare, agriculture, natural resources and environmental sciences, food management, bioremediation, as well as the biomedical and biotechnology fields. A degree in Biological Sciences also prepares students for professional careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science, and education, and graduate studies in the life sciences.

The STEM-Designated MS in Management - Finance Analysis concentration includes extensive study of financial markets to prepare students for professional careers in corporate and investment finance. The curriculum includes an examination of capital markets, investment banking, financial institutions, corporate financial control, securities valuation techniques, capital budgeting, portfolio strategies, hedging and arbitrage, and international fund management.

The program provides students with foundational training in accounting and statistical analysis and in-depth finance skill sets necessary to understand and meet the growing needs of financial industries and prepares students for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate programs of study in mathematics with specializations in the fields of algebra, analysis, topology, applied mathematics, probability and statistics, actuarial science, industrial mathematics, and atmospheric science.

The programs of study at the master’s level are designed to suit both the student intending to continue toward a PhD as well as the student who wishes to begin a professional career upon completion of the master’s program.

The student may prepare for a career in teaching at the secondary or college level and for a career in research in the academic, industrial, government, or business communities.

Industrial Mathematics
The objective of the master’s program in industrial mathematics is to enable students to acquire the fundamentals of applied mathematics in areas of classical and numerical analysis, differential equations and dynamical systems, and probability and statistics. At the same time, the connection of these fields to modeling of physical, biological, and engineering phenomena will be stressed by requiring credits outside of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Students are to obtain practical experience in mathematical modeling and analysis during an internship or industrial project that will culminate in a thesis.

Actuarial Science
The program provides a mathematically rigorous education in actuarial science, prepares students for actuarial professional exams, and develops their economics and business reasoning skills. Students obtain thorough knowledge in the fundamentals of actuarial science such as applied probability models, applied statistics, credibility, financial economics, life contingencies, loss models, and risk theory. Emphasis is placed on developing skills that are highly valued by employers and thus are essential for a successful career as actuary. This program is intended for students who will seek employment as an actuary upon completion of the degree.
