Women's and Gender Studies is a discipline that critically examines gender and women's issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and challenges many traditional assumptions and theories. It examines the practice and expression of gender in different societies and at different historical moments.

Regardless of your gender, Women's and Gender Studies is crucial and relevant for anyone interested in working in criminal justice, social work, the non-profit sector, the arts, politics, business, and more. Students learn to look at the world and history through different perspectives and think about how gender and our perceptions of it impact culture, society, and daily interactions. It is a traditional liberal arts discipline where the knowledge and skills developed in the program can be applied to all types of career paths. Work experiences during college through internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer positions often shape career paths after graduation.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate programs of study in mathematics with specializations in the fields of algebra, analysis, topology, applied mathematics, probability and statistics, actuarial science, industrial mathematics, and atmospheric science.

The programs of study at the master’s level are designed to suit both the student intending to continue toward a PhD as well as the student who wishes to begin a professional career upon completion of the master’s program.

The student may prepare for a career in teaching at the secondary or college level and for a career in research in the academic, industrial, government, or business communities.

The Information Technology Management (ITM) degree provides undergraduate students with the knowledge needed to develop creative and effective business solutions, based on a thorough comprehension of business problems and opportunities.

To that end, students are provided with a strong technical foundation in contemporary approaches to business application systems development which includes planning, analysis, design, project management, programming, maintenance, and support using state-of-the-art technologies, tools, and techniques, as well as an essential background in various business functional areas, such as management, marketing, accounting, finance, supply chain, and economics. In addition, there is an emphasis on the communication skills and teamwork critical to client understanding and satisfaction.

The ITM program is intended to be the first step in a lifelong learning experience in the exciting and dynamic field of ITM. It provides a strong foundation for advancement and success in ITM careers and ventures.

The BA in Animation will prepare graduates to secure positions as animators and multimedia artists in the moving image production industry.

Graduates of this program will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of artistic principles, conventions, methods, and practices through the creation and production of animated works of art;
2. Utilize the core concepts, capabilities, and tools of animation technology;
3. Apply critical and creative thinking skills in a variety of contexts;
4. Identify ways in which animation can be utilized in both creative and practical contexts;
5. Assure high quality production values in the work that they create; and
6. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, produce projects individually and collaboratively, engage fully in the entire production process, from concept to distribution.

Cytotechnologists examine human cells under the microscope, looking for early signs of cancer or other diseases. When abnormal cells are detected, the cytotechnologist works with a pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis. The Cytotechnology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP), www.caahep.org, located at 1361 Park St., Clearwater, FL 33756. Students successfully completing this program are eligible to sit for a national certification exam. Students enrolled in the Cytotechnology Program will complete their senior year of professional clinical training at the UW / State Lab of Hygiene in Madison.

The Helen Bader School of Social Welfare (HBSSW) offers a program of graduate studies in social work. As a department in an urban research university, the mission of the Department of Social Work is to promote positive change through social work research, scholarship, education, and community partnerships. The Department promotes the values of the social work profession through a commitment to social justice and diversity, a dedication to public service, and an emphasis on individual and community well-being. The goal of the MSW program is to prepare graduates with specialized knowledge and skills for advanced practice and leadership with diverse populations and communities.

The Urban Planning program at UWM is a professional, skills-oriented, master’s program designed to train students to perform a variety of planning-related jobs in either the public or private sector.

The program focuses on planning as a process for improving collective decisions in the public and private sectors. The planning process includes analyzing problems, designing alternative solutions and evaluating their consequences, developing strategies for action and participating in their implementation. This process is used in both government and business in developing policy for future action, so that today’s solutions do not become tomorrow’s problems.

Geographic Information Systems
This concentration provides the skills and experience needed by professional planners to develop and use spatial analysis technology in both public and private organizations to improve their service delivery, management, and policy planning activities. Planning students learn state-of-the-art skills for using and analyzing data spatially in planning for improvements in transportation, housing, economic development, environment, natural resources, and related fields.

Centered on the study and use of digital technologies in direct relation to traditional visual art, our students combine interactive and electronic media with a secondary established focus (such as Ceramics, Fibers, Design etc.) to create new forms of art.

The Cognitive and Developmental Sciences concentration provides students with the psychological foundations of education. The program emphasizes the perspective of the learner and concentrates on the following content areas: cognition, development, and social. The program focuses on research skills as they apply to education and training, throughout the lifespan, in a broad range of settings.

The Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies offers a master’s program for educators, community leaders, and those working in community-based organizations. Students deepen their knowledge about urban education and the contexts of urban communities. The program enhances participants’ ability to critically analyze education and processes of community change, and courses focus on the causes of inequality and oppression and explore approaches for fostering change.
