RMIT's Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) will equip you with fundamental knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, develop your communication and professional skills and introduce you to factors that impact the health of individuals and communities, particularly our First Nations peoples.

You'll build skills and knowledge of molecular diagnostics which will provide an overview of the detection and application of biochemical and molecular biology techniques (DNA or RNA) to provide clinical information in the study of human diseases, including infectious disease, inherited conditions and cancer.

You'll also learn about clinical immunology and pathology, gaining an understanding of the diagnosis and management of patients with diseases or disease processes that result from disturbed immunological or pathophysiological mechanisms.

As a graduate of this laboratory medicine degree, you'll be qualified to practise as a medical scientist in the diagnostic pathology industry, be competitive for employment in medical research and be competitive for entry into PhD studies.

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences conducts research in the area of ageing and chronic disease. Experienced researchers will supervise your work in the areas of:

• Cognitive and sensory disorders
• Diabetes, fatty liver disease and obesity: nutritional factors and drug discovery
• Early-life determinants of chronic metabolic disorders
• Musculoskeletal function and pain
• Respiratory and sleep disorders.

The research methodologies available to students include:

• Use of laboratory disease models and evaluations
• Biochemical assays, molecular biology techniques and signalling pathway investigations
• Discovery of clinical biomarkers and new therapies for chronic disease.

You will undertake clinical or experimental research in one of these fields with an individual supervisor overseeing your development and progress.

Through your studies in this degree, you will learn to:

• Plan and effectively manage an independent project on sustainable energy topics at a professional engineering level
• Locate and critically review scientific and engineering literature and apply engineering practices and research methods to conduct sustainable energy projects and evaluate their results

A final-year research project forms an essential part of this degree. Through this self-selected project (from a range of available topics), you will draw on not only the advanced engineering skills you have built, but also coursework around ethical, economic and social responsibility.

This selective-entry, research-oriented honours degree is designed for capable and highly-motivated students who want hands-on involvement in research projects.

It prepares you for the compulsory one-year internship that you will need to complete in order to gain Australia-wide registration as a pharmacist.

Once you've successfully completed the degree and the internship, you will be registered to practise in any area of pharmacy in Australia, including community or hospital pharmacy.

Alternatively, this degree provides you with a foundation from which you can progress with further studies, to achieve a range of other career opportunities.

As the pharmaceutical industry expands in Australia and world-wide, your understanding of the engineering process and other scientific fields involved in drug development and production, will ensure you’re well equipped to work across a range of roles.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the principles of chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences, allowing you to apply your knowledge to large scale production in the pharmaceutical industry.

You’ll have the opportunity to design creative solutions through inspiring and sustainable design-and-build projects, as well as taking part in the Engineers Without Borders Challenge — a humanitarian-focused course offered in all RMIT engineering degrees.
