Bachelor of Mathematics in Data Science

This degree is designed to produce job-ready graduates to meet this industry need, and to fill the growing range of work opportunities in the market. Successful maths and data scientists draw on skills from a range of complementary disciplines, so this degree offers a balanced mix of mathematics, information technology and data science. In your final year you’ll have the chance to complete an industry-based project to experience real-world challenges and gain workplace experience.

What you'll learn

In your first year you’ll study core subjects in maths and IT. You will focus on building your mathematical and programming skills with courses that include calculus, statistical methods, fundamentals of programming, and databases.

You will then move into your applied data science studies. You’ll study cross-disciplinary areas such as web development, data structures and mathematical communication, and mathematical modelling.

In your final year you’ll combine study and hands-on experience with courses in programming and networking, decision making and analytics. You will also complete either an industry-based Maths Clinic project or a major project to strengthen your abilities in research, analysis, and interpretation of data.

What you'll learn

This is a very flexible degree. You can select two majors from the following fields:

  • Applied physics: allows you to pursue in-depth studies in advanced materials, computational physics and medical health physics
  • Biology for Science: includes plant and animal biology, cell biology, physiology, environmental biology, biochemistry and introductory biotechnology
  • Chemistry for Science: offers studies in both physical and inorganic chemistry
  • Ecosystem sciences: looks at environmental sciences and policy including the contemporary concepts of ecosystem management and sustainable development that link natural and social systems, providing a solid foundation in natural sciences and field research techniques.
  • Geoscience and Biogeochemistry: combines the study of chemical, physical, geological and biological processes that shape the natural environment, with an emphasis on problems such as climate change, environmental pollution and landscape modification. Investigate the Earth System and the dynamic interactions that govern global change from the microscopic to the macroscopic scale.
  • Mathematics and statistics: investigates core studies in applied mathematics, statistics and optimisation.
  • Computer Science: develops knowledge of the fundamentals and practice of computing, including studies in programming, data structures, operating systems, computer systems organisation, logic and computational mathematics.

Civil and structural engineers are responsible for the infrastructure and resources that keep our cities, towns and rural areas functioning. They focus on the design and construction of buildings, bridges and other structural components of infrastructure projects.

What you'll learn

In your first year, you will develop a strong, general foundation in engineering before commencing your civil engineering courses in second year. During your third year, you will start taking introductory structural engineering courses, such as structural analysis and steel and timber design, with your final year primarily focused on specialised structural courses including earthquake and masonry engineering and cold-formed steel design.

At least half of your honours year will involve a major project. Projects are generally supported by industry clients or based in a research area like the Sustainable Infrastructure and Resource Management concentration. Our UniSA STEM Professional Practice Program allows you to apply the skills and knowledge you've acquired throughout your degree in real-world settings.

This industry-relevant postgraduate qualification is for students who have already completed a three-year bachelor degree and would like to increase their employment prospects with a teaching qualification specialising in primary education.
