In this two-year diploma program, students develop their technical, communication and interpersonal skills. At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills by participating in a 90-hour field placement position in a local business.

Through a combination of hands-on activities in our state-of-the-art shops and theory-based classes, graduates from the Motive Power Techniques - Truck and Coach Repair certificate program are well-positioned to enter and be successful working in this trade area. Throughout the duration of your program, you will develop a strong foundation of technical skills needed for the truck and coach trade.
You will develop safe working practices in the use of tools, machinery, and equipment to complete the repair of engines, transmissions, drive trains and electrical/electronic components, and will apply basic communication, documentation, information technology, and computer skills to support a motive power-related work environment. To round out your training, you will be introduced to the basics of running a motive power business and relevant legal issues.
As a graduate of the certificate program, you will have an opportunity to receive automatic exemption from Level 1 of the Truck and Coach Technician apprenticeship in-school training should you choose to pursue that career pathway.

Program Outcomes

• Inspect, and test truck/coach operation and components in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
• Assess and diagnose basic truck/ coach engine systems and components.
• Inspect and test basic truck/coach electrical, electronic, fuel and emission systems and components.
• Assess and diagnose basic truck/coach drive train systems and components.
• Inspect and test basic truck/coach suspension, steering, wheel-end assemblies and brake systems and components.
• Disassemble and reassemble components to required specifications.
• Test and inspect truck/coach basic hydraulics and pneumatics systems and subsystems.
• Use information technology and computer skills to access data concerning repair procedures and manufacturers' updates.
• Prepare logs, records, and documentation to appropriate standards.
• Build and maintain customer relations by following ethical business practices.
• Develop and use personal and professional strategies and plans to improve professional growth, job performance, and work relationships.
• Complete all assigned work in compliance with occupational, health, safety, and environmental law; established policies and procedures; codes and regulations; and in accordance with ethical principles.
• Apply basic knowledge of the operating principles to truck and coach systems, subsystems and related components.
• Perform soldering operations, welding and cutting using oxy fuel welding using GMAW.

This program provides the student with programming experience and the skills necessary to analyze and design Information Technology (IT) based solutions.In the Computer Applications Development program, students benefit from specialized courses taught by highly qualified industry experts. As a result, students should expect to have classes scheduled up until 8:00 p.m.The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term.

With the current pace of construction in Ontario, there is a high demand for skilled equipment operators to support this industry. Completion of the Heavy Construction Equipment Operation program will position you for success in the industry. This program includes a significant amount of hands-on experience, safely performing basic maintenance and operating various pieces of large equipment at one of our two program locations (South Guelph or Brantford Airport). You will also be exposed to compact equipment and paving operations. This practical experience is complemented with related theory including environmental practices, soils, concrete and asphalt, surveying and site plans. By the end of the program, you will be well-prepared for success as you enter employment in the heavy construction and paving industries as an equipment operator. As a graduate of this program, you will have the opportunity to receive automatic exemption from all of the apprenticeship in-school training for the three Heavy Equipment Operator trades (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe, Excavator, Dozer) should you choose to pursue that career pathway.

Applying to the Co-op Stream:-

• All applicants apply to the non co-op program. Students will be informed of the application deadline and process to apply for the Co-op Stream. Labour market conditions determine co-op seats in optional co-op programs. Every student who meets academic eligibility requirements may not be admitted to the co-op stream.
• To be considered for admission to the co-op stream, students are required to achieve a minimum overall 85% session weighted average with no dropped or failed courses during the term that occurs two terms prior to the co-op work term.
