What will I learn?

Materials engineering is indispensible in supplying materials to any industrialized nation. Materials engineers look at how materials are made; how and why certain materials are chosen for the manufacturing of different products like computers or cars; and how materials can be improved. 

Metals and materials are found in every aspect of society today. Materials have always been central to the advancement of civilization so it is not surprising that entire eras are named after them (bronze age, iron age). The importance of developing new, advanced materials is truly a global issue with societal demands for things such as more fuel efficient vehicles and faster computer processors reaching all time highs. Materials Engineers are the driving force behind such developments, having an unsurpassed understanding of the respective structure, properties and processing of materials. Consequently, graduates are employed in practically all industries. Principals amongst these are primary metal production, automotive, aerospace, government research establishments and consulting firms. Literally all graduates find immediate employment - historically, over 70% have secured full time positions before the start of their final academic term. These niche individuals are highly respected within the companies that they work for and many advance into upper managerial and executive positions.

The Bachelor of Commuity Design (BCD) is a three-year program that explores ways in which people can work towards creating and maintaining healthy and sustainable communities. Our BCD Brochure gives you an overview of the degree.

If you are eager to make changes in the world, the BCD will help you develop the knowledge and skills to allow you to analyse issues facing communities, such as food security, just cities, sustainable transportation, and affordable housing. You will learn how to develop solutions to these pressing concerns in communities of different sizes. Our students care about the future of communities, are committed to sustainable urban sysems, and want to learn how to develop better designed environments. The Master of Health Administration (MHA) is a 16-month, CA+HME accredited program will prepare you to take the lead in managing healthcare organizations. You can cultivate a career in management and administration, playing a transformative role in improving healthcare for the communities we serve.

On the off chance that you are interested in acting, directing, playwriting or analyzing theatre or film then the Bachelor of Arts-Theatre program at Dalhousie University is the best option for you. The Department of Theatre has a wide range of courses to start your career in Acting, Stage Design and Technical Theatre and Theatre Studies. 

Students will be learning about film editing, art direction and also will have opportunities to apply their skills in labs for set construction, lighting, props, and sound.  After completing the program you may have a wide variety of career opportunities like director, playwright, actor, technician or designer in the professional theatre in Canada.  You may also work as a high school drama teacher, or as art administration in the theatre and film industries. 

The only program of its kind in Canada, Bioveterinary Science will give you the foundation for a career in veterinary medicine and opens up a world of other exciting opportunities. Offered at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S., this degree program is the starting point for your animal-related career.

What will I learn?
Dalhousie's Bioveterinary Science program blends a core general science education with specialized courses in animal health and welfare. Our 200-hectare farm and high-tech laboratories give you opportunities in experiential learning. You’ll work directly with animals like sheep, dairy cows, fish, chickens and more in both an academic and research capacity.

Students begin by taking foundation courses in biology, chemistry, math, physics, genetics, biochemistry and cell biology. These courses will give you the background for more in-depth studies in topics such as veterinary epidemiology, animal health and nutrition and mammalian physiology. You’ll leave with an in-depth knowledge of animals and focus on issues related to their health and care.

Dalhousie University introduced the Master of Engineering (MEng) in Internetworking in 1997. Offered through the Faculties of Engineering and Graduate Studies, it's the world's longest-running graduate program dedicated to Internetworking. 

The MEng in Internetworking is a two-year course-based program that covers a range of topics related to the industry, including current technology and its past and future evolution. This intensive degree program provides students with practical experience and the solid, theoretical background necessary to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of technology and the challenges that lie ahead.

Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers play an essential role in industries ranging from manufacturing to health care to the renewable energy, designing everything from medical devices to engines.

In our programs, our expert faculty teach how parts, machines and systems work and how to design and analyze them. Our students understand and apply concepts in solid mechanics, control and thermofluids.

In addition to building a strong theoretical foundation in engineering, you'll work with new technology and apply your knowledge in hands-on design projects.

WHY STUDY VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY AT DAL?
Make a difference in an animal's life
Do you want to become an integral part of a veterinary medical team? The Veterinary Technology program at our Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S. will get you there. This program is accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association so you’ll be prepared to work as a technician with practicing veterinarians, researchers and other professionals who work with animals in medical or scientific environments.
What will I learn?
In this two-year diploma program, you’ll take a variety of courses in animal medicine and nursing, clinical exercises and pathology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. To reflect the majority of employment opportunities in Atlantic Canada, the program is oriented mainly towards companion animals. However, you'll also learn about large animal practice, lab animals and alternative pet medicine. 

We’ll provide opportunities for you to learn outside the classroom through an off-campus externship at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown, P.E. and in general veterinary practices. You can also work in our on-campus animal clinic, where you’ll learn the skills required to be successful in a companion animal veterinary practice.

CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil engineers provide a major contribution to society. They design and construct the infrastructures we use every day, from the roadways we travel on to the power stations that provide our homes with electricity.

Areas of focus
Students who choose to complete a degree in Civil Engineering will choose one of two distinct areas of focus:

• Option 1: Infrastructure
  • Students who choose structural engineering and materials will focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructures, including buildings, bridges, highways, airports, power plants and tunnels and the materials that will ensure their resiliency and sustainability. This stream allows students to choose technical electives from any of the sub-disciplines in Civil Engineering.
• Option 2: Earth and Environment
  • With a focus on water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and environmental systems analysis, students will learn to identify and design solutions to mediate and mitigate human impacts on the environment. Students in this option may choose to specialize in the Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences courses that are directly relevant to the Civil Engineering profession.
