The most flexible module option within the School of Health Studies, the modules in Health Sciences give students the opportunity to learn about and experience a broad range of topics that relate to health across the lifespan. Students in the Major, Specialization or Honors Specialization Health Sciences can expect to learn about youth and adolescent health, health in aging populations, health promotion, and health ethics. In their upper years, they may choose from a diverse selection of courses, ranging from disease mechanisms and embryology, to social media and health, healthcare law, and sexuality, gender and health.

Experience the Middle Ages in all its glory through an exciting, Faculty-wide program led by over twenty of Western’s world-renowned medieval experts. Beginning with the foundation course, Medieval Studies 1020, you will then create your own roadmap through this fascinating period in history, resulting in a Minor or Major in Medieval Studies. With opportunities to study Latin at Poitiers or experience an archaeological dig in Europe or the Middle East, medieval studies will truly come to life!

Jewish Studies is excited to welcome all students at Western and our Affiliated Colleges! This program offers our diverse student body an opportunity to pursue a Major or a Minor in Jewish Studies, providing a rigorous academic setting to learn more about the diverse history and culture of the Jewish People, past and present. Our wide-ranging program explores the many disciplines related to Jewish studies on Main Campus, at King’s, and at Huron, including Art, Biblical Studies, Hebrew Language, History, Literature, Media Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Rabbinics, and Religious Studies. The inter-disciplinary nature of Jewish Studies allows students to sample multiple forms of knowledge and to understand Jewish politics, culture, and society from a variety of perspectives. By combining breadth and depth, the Jewish Studies Program contributes to a well-rounded Liberal Arts education to any and all interested undergraduates.

The culture and history of the Jewish people extends across more than three millennia, from Biblical times to the present, and spans across most of the world, from the Middle East to Latin America and from Eastern Europe to North America. The study of the Jewish experience highlights the complexities of cultural exchange and interactions in changing temporal and geographic circumstances. Students learn not only about the unique trajectory of Jewish life, but also gain a more nuanced picture of non-Jewish societies. As the study of a diaspora people, the Jewish story is one that can be contrasted and compared to that of other minority groups, offering unique insights into and perspectives on religion, sociology, politics and culture.

Students of Jewish Studies gain vital skills, including proficiency in writing and verbal expression; critical thinking; aptitude in a foreign language (Hebrew); sensitivities to cultural difference; textual analysis and many more!

Writing Studies aims to provide students with the ability to affect the world, both inside and outside the university, by helping them become self-directed, creative, and intellectual agents able to engage effectively with and contribute to the resolution of problems through the use of language both written and spoken. Our program combines the core activities of our contemporary social, political, and cultural world with the study and mastery of the constitutive and social dynamics of writing, rhetorical theory, and texts to provide pragmatic and intellectual tools for our graduates throughout their professional, intellectual, and social lives.

Chemical engineers work to innovate, improve lives and address society’s growing sustainability concerns. As a Western Chemical engineering student, you will use a multiscale engineering approach to design commercial processes that sustainably transform raw materials, living cells and microorganisms into useful consumer products such as polymers and biopolymers, medicines, food, and fuels; while at the same time protecting the environment. You will use theory and practice to develop the skills necessary to address global sustainability challenges including Greenhouse Gas mitigation, carbon capture and the production of clean water.

These modules help students understand the fundamental factors associated with identifying, treating, and rehabilitating members of society with a goal of improving quality of life. Rehabilitation Sciences explores the theories underlying rehabilitation of children and adults as well as studying the impact and effects of mental health, disease, and human movement. Students wishing to pursue careers in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy find the modules in Rehabilitation Sciences offer an excellent knowledge foundation that they can build upon in their graduate studies.

Are you moved by crisis in Darfur? Do social movements such as the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street interest you? Do you want to work for a public service or a non-profit organisation? Then the Media and the Public Interest (MPI) program might be for you. The MPI program is the only one of its kind in Canada and connects issues of communication and media to social justice issues such as democracy, equity, class, race, and gender. Students in MPI examine social movements and how media can be used to further these causes. Some example courses in the MPI program include Alternative Media, Social Movements and Media, and Activism in Mainstream Media. A primary goal of the program is to connect media theory learned in the classroom to real world experiences. Students are encouraged to put what they learn to use. Many of the courses feature a service learning component or practicum that gives students the opportunity to volunteer in a community organisation.

Instead of specializing, Integrated engineers work across fields realizing opportunities and implementing practical solutions. In the Integrated engineering program, you will have a broad foundation in engineering fundamentals and problem-solving approaches across different engineering disciplines and develop skills to navigate and manage the interaction between engineering and business. Your knowledge and skills will be suited to participate on and lead interdisciplinary engineering and business teams to seek innovative solutions to significant challenges, including: climate change, renewable energy, environmentally friendly buildings, food and water security, autonomous transportation systems, and much more.

Do you wonder how our technology works? Physics connects the microscopic rules of quantum mechanics to the macroscopic properties of modern materials. Participate in developing new types of solar cells, studying the interface between cells and matrix material, or building lasers based on quantum dots. Our experimental physicists are looking for students to contribute to these and other projects.
