Humber’s Art Foundation certificate program offers you the opportunity to investigate different areas of artistic media and develop portfolios for entry into further study. This program integrates visual art skills across several media and is designed to encourage you to explore a wide range of techniques and concepts. You will work closely with experienced faculty from a variety of creative industries developing innovative approaches and building your strengths through a variety of painting, drawing, photography, digital design, video, animation and fine art classes, as you gain valuable insights about the art world. In just two semesters, you will gain a thorough understanding of many artistic disciplines and build well-developed visual literacy and creative skills. You will apply your acquired skills to create a portfolio that will support your personal work and/or prepare you to pursue related programs at Humber and beyond.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Analyze, simplify and deconstruct complex forms to solve artistic problems.
• Employ basic measurement systems to produce accurate proportional and perspective renderings.
• Create traditional and digital artwork which reflects adherence to accepted design principles.
• Apply basic principles of visual perception, simplification, organization and the nine-point value scale to create realistic images.
• Identify types and applications of drawing, painting and photographic tools and equipment used to produce original artworks.
• Apply basic principles of colour observation, colour and pigment mixing, and digital colorization to accurately depict value, hue and saturation.
• Create the illusion of three dimensions on a plane surface by applying techniques of texture, shading and linear perspective.

The Fundraising Management graduate certificate program prepares you for a career that makes an immediate, positive contribution to the world. Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Articulate the roles of the volunteer and staff in charitable organizations.
• Manage staff and volunteer resources including the recruitment and selection of personnel, and their subsequent orientation, training and evaluation.
• Conceptualize, plan and execute fundraising projects and programs, including defining goals and objectives, outputs, outcomes, and project budgets. Such activities may include major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, corporate giving or capital campaigns.
• Prepare proposals and administer grants.
• Manage computer application and databases in order to input, compile and report data, and analyze new markets for development opportunities.
• Develop basic financial management skills relevant to the charitable sector.
• Conduct research and analysis associated with the management of fundraising programs (For example, sector research, prospect research).

Work Placement
Placements are typically abundant and secured with charities and non-profit groups although can be completed with consulting firms, corporate donation offices, foundations or government granting agencies across the philanthropic sector. Work placements normally take place in the spring and are often paid.

From resolving community disputes, labour grievances and employment-standards complaints to representing clients in the civil justice system, our well-rounded Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) graduate certificate program benefits those wanting to be better conflict resolution facilitators, as well as agents representing parties in various dispute resolution processes.

With a core curriculum spanning community mediation, administrative tribunals, labour law, family law, conflict resolution in healthcare and conflict management system design, the program uses intensive workshop training and community engagement to teach the core principles of negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Applying these principles, participants learn to resolve disputes between individuals, businesses, stakeholders in the health sector, government agencies and within families.

It is an ideal program for recent university graduates wanting to enhance their academic credentials, as well as those currently employed in areas such as law, human resources, healthcare, education, social work, real estate and government. Students have the opportunity to apply the theory and skills they’ve learned at Humber's on-campus Dispute Resolution Clinic. Students gain practical experience through a mandatory four-week work placement (160 hours).

Humber’s Business Management – Entrepreneurial Enterprise graduate certificate program provides the practical skills and knowledge you’ll need to take on a wide variety of leadership roles in innovative entrepreneurial enterprises.

This program covers every area of entrepreneurship from the fundamentals of developing and refining ideas to launching, growing and managing the enterprise. You will be prepared to take on key management roles in entrepreneurial enterprises including operations, marketing and sales, finance, human resources and strategic planning. Plus, you will learn all you need to start and manage your own new enterprise.

Students in this program can participate in Humber’s Business funding competitions for a chance to obtain seed funding for their new enterprise and other contests and progams sponsored by Humber's Centre for Entrepreneurship. Students in this program automatically become members of Humber’s Centre for Entrepreneurship which gives them access to mentorship, coaching, networking events, seminars, workshops, and entrepreneurial facilities and workspaces.

• Develop and implement a comprehensive business plan for a new business enterprise.
• Present an executive summary of a comprehensive business plan to potential financial backers.
• Set up and operate a basic bookkeeping and accounting system for a new enterprise that will enable effective financial management.

• Devise marketing plans encompassing development, implementation, performance monitoring and adjustment using appropriate tools, techniques and applications.

Humber’s Community and Justice Services diploma program focuses on both the community and the institutional sectors of the justice system. Our curriculum combines theory and applied skills, giving you the breadth of knowledge and experience needed to meet the demands of an entry-level position in this field. You’ll be prepared for occupations where you will work with offenders and other high-risk client groups and will explore the development of community programs, restorative justice initiatives and preventative measures. In addition, we practise inclusivity from a broad anti-oppressive perspective and place a strong emphasis on the practice of interpersonal, problem-solving and assessment skills.

Our faculty are skilled, committed, and have direct work experience within community and institutional correctional services. As a result, our program boasts strong community links. Additionally, experts also deliver further specialized community justice training. Our advisory committee regularly reviews our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of developments in the field. 

You will have an opportunity to practise your skills during a supervised, comprehensive work placement in an institutional or community setting in Semesters 3 and 4, two days per week.

Humber’s Developmental Services Worker (DSW) diploma program teaches you skills to effectively promote the physical, mental and emotional health of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our faculty team consists of developmental services professionals who are active in the field, and our small class sizes allow for individualized attention. Our curriculum is designed with input from developmental services field experts, ensuring courses are current and relevant.

Your studies begin by learning the stages of human development, the types of developmental disabilities and the range of available community support services for this population. Next, you’ll learn intervention techniques, person-centered planning, abnormal psychology/dual diagnosis, basic pharmacology, supporting people with autism and other complex needs, augmentative forms of communication, and effective responses to people who have been abused. Finally, you’ll develop skills in building interpersonal relationships and counselling. 

You’ll also build your expertise in our counselling labs which provide an ideal setting to develop competencies for working with individuals with limited verbal skills.

Work Placement
Our program offers a rich diversity of innovative and traditional work-integrated learning opportunities. You will complete 568 hours of experiential education with three separate community partners over the duration of the program.

After consulting with you regarding your interests and preferences, your field placement co-ordinator will refer you to specific agencies for these unpaid work experiences.

Field placements run for 14 weeks in Semester 2 of the first year. Students are required to complete 168 hours in this time. Placements are two days per week. Internships take place during fourth semester of second year. Students are required to complete 400 hours with two different employers, four days per week for 14 weeks.

Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce - Human Resources Management degree program focuses on applied professional human resources (HR) practices and solutions. Our program starts with a foundation of business studies in areas such as organizational behaviour, law, economics, finance and accounting, marketing, and operations management. Specialization courses will focus on HR, giving you practical skills through applied projects such as developing plans and strategies to address key issues in recruitment and selection, compensation, policy, and training and development. You will have the opportunity to develop processes from the idea stage through to execution, and you will learn from experienced professors and a network of industry professionals.

The program is closely connected to the HR industry. You will have the opportunity to meet with a panel of the program’s advisory committee members to discuss career opportunities and to attend workshops and events on human resources-related topics.

Work Placement
The program requires that you complete 14 weeks/420 hours of paid work in the summer between your sixth and seventh semesters. This gives you the hands-on, real-world experience that employers value. Your placement will give you the opportunity to explore the field you’d like to work in when you graduate. We will work with employers and our industry partners to help you identify opportunities to pursue.

Humber’s Media Communications diploma program is designed to meet industry demands within multi-faceted areas of the communications industry. Students graduate with a diverse range of marketable skills in photography, graphic design, web design and writing, social media, and videography.

In the program, you will learn how to:

• Be effective transmedia storytellers across multiple platforms
• Produce corporate video and audio for the web and other applications
• Design, write for and edit effective websites
• Shoot professional photographic images in both the studio and on location environments
• Create and edit content using current software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
• Learn how to establish, operate and market your business through a course in freelance and project management
• Research, write and design communications such as media kits, blogs and brochures

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring you are learning current and relevant information in state-of-the-art labs from industry experts – people who know the trends and effective methods of communications.

The first semester of this program is shared with the two-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma, the three-year Journalism advanced diploma, the two-year Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma, and the three-year Public Relations advanced diploma programs, allowing the flexibility to continue in any of these five programs in second semester.

  • Capture, scan, download, save, store, and manipulate digital images using current software applications.

  • Adhere to ethical and legal guidelines in communications practice.

Work Placement
Students will participate in a mandatory work placement which takes place in the last semester of study. During that time, students hone their skills in professional environments, developing digital communication solutions. They build complete portfolios which, when they graduate, have them standing out from their competitors as corporate communications professionals.

Humber’s Theatre Arts - Production diploma program provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to launch your career working in the professional theatre industry. You will learn how to build exquisite props, puppets, costumes, set pieces and painted scenery; how to incorporate light and sound into a theatrical performance; and how to serve the collaborative team through stage and production management. You will develop hands-on expertise mounting productions for the Humber Theatre season in partnership with students enrolled in our Theatre Arts - Performance program. The Humber Theatre season is fully integrated with the academic curriculum to ensure a balanced learning environment.

We focus on creative work in a collaborative artistic environment with professional discipline, broad-based training and education in all areas of production for the performing arts, while instilling a commitment to lifelong learning in this constantly changing field.

All of our faculty have substantial industry experience, and part-time instructors have full-time professional careers. As well, professional directors, designers, rehearsal stage managers, fight directors and other specialists outside of the faculty are brought in for the Humber Theatre season and other projects. We hire directors and designers who are known for their unusual and innovative approaches. Their creativity brings constant challenges, excitement and learning opportunities to the Humber Theatre production season and enhances in-class instruction. These professionals often provide our students with contacts, references and employment

• Provide a cohesive production experience through the integration and operation of theatre technology.

• Integrate applied research on national and international theatrical history and culture to inform professional discussions.

Humber’s Financial Planning graduate certificate program provides a clear pathway to careers in the lucrative financial services industry including banks, investment firms, insurance companies, financial planning firms among others. Our program provides you with a broad range of financial services, business and soft skills plus the opportunity to earn the licences and designations that financial services institutions are looking for in the professionals they hire. 
Faculty are chosen for their expertise and experience in the financial services sector, and many continue to work in the industry.

• Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
  • Adhere to the certified financial planner ethical code of conduct, standards of practice, regulatory, legal and taxation requirements.
  • Establish and manage the client-planner relationship.
  • Analyze and evaluate client financial data including investment goals, life and health insurance, retirement planning and estate planning, considering economic information.
  • Develop and present financial recommendations and/or alternatives regarding investments, retirement planning, estate planning, life and health insurance.
  • Implement financial recommendations and monitor clients’ accounts.
  • Market and promote financial products, services, solutions and strategies that meet client needs.
  • Provide investment advisory services, using current software and entrepreneurial skills.
  • Qualify to challenge the Certified Financial Planner (CFP™), the Life Insurance Licence (LLQP) examination and the Canadian Securities Course.

Work Placement

• Gain first-hand experience in the financial services industry with a four-week work placement taking place either part time during the program or full time at the end of the program. Placements provide the valuable work experience employers seek.
