The Native Teacher Education Program was created to increase the number of qualified Native teachers through innovative programming delivered on and off campus. We strongly believe that teachers who have an intimate understanding of Native traditions, heritage, psychology, way of life, and language are best able to create a learning environment suited to the habits and interests of the Native child.

As such, your education will familiarize you with the social and cultural customs and values of Native communities so you can effectively meet the needs of your future students.

While the pursuit of knowledge has evolved into specialized disciplines, philosophy continues to address the larger, fundamental questions underlying these disciplines such as "What is knowledge?", "What is truth?", "What is justice?". By studying philosophy, you will learn about the intellectual foundations of our society, but you will also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that will enable you to re-examine society with an inquisitive mind and a discerning lens. 

We will explore fundamental philosophical concepts, from Ancient Greek to the modern era, in order to understand contemporary thinking about ethics and justice in context. Our programs emphasize reasoning skills, oral debate, and writing proficiency with the balance of coursework dedicated to such philosophical topics as:

Due to the multidisciplinary relevance of the field, you may combine your studies with disciplines such as English, History, French, Indigenous Learning, Psychology, or Political Science.  We are also one of the few universities in Canada to offer a minor in Professional Ethics. This is a great option if you are interested in examining ethical issues in business, biomedical science, the environment, or - digital technology.

A Master of Science (MSc) in Civil Engineering at Lakehead University satisfies the demand for highly qualified personnel that are prepared to address global challenges within the field of Civil Engineering. This program offers students the opportunity for advanced study and the development of independent research abilities in the discipline. Students in the MSc program have the opportunity to work collaboratively with world-class researchers in state of the art facilities and all within a collegial learning environment. Graduate students will benefit from small class sizes, a collegial environment, and close supervisor-student interactions. The program offers three routes to the degree:

• The thesis option fosters develops the independent research abilities of students. These objectives are achieved through a combination of course work and research. This option is ideal for students seeking to continue on to doctoral studies as well as students interested in research and development careers within industry. All thesis students must enrol full-time in the program.
• In addition, there are two course-based options that combine advanced level coursework with either a research project or paper. The course based options allow students broad exposure to advanced topics within the field as well as the opportunity to complete a research project or investigate an emerging field of engineering through the completion of a research paper. Both full-time and flex-time options are available for course-based students.

Most students opt for the non-thesis option given that it is the standard in most graduate Economics programs in North America. This option consists of eight half courses and an extended research paper. Many students will take six courses during their first year (three in fall, three in winter); two courses in the fall of the second year and complete their extended paper in the winter of the second year.

MA Economics Co-operative Program Option
The purpose of the co-op option is to provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and to obtain new insights and educational experiences. Two four-month work terms (which may be taken consecutively) follow the first two terms of study.

To proceed to the co-op option, students must complete at least six half courses chosen from those required for the thesis and non-thesis options.

By the year 2041, it is projected that over 25% of Canada's population will be over the age of 65. As the world's populations age, so does the demand for professionals with knowledge in this field. Gerontology at Lakehead University is very multidisciplinary as seniors require assistance and advocacy on a range of topics from financial issues to sexuality. Gerontology incorporates elements from the following disciplines:

As a graduate, you will understand individual and societal influences on aging and their relevance to health and well-being throughout the adult life span. More specifically, you will demonstrate knowledge on the following topics:

• Death and dying issues and ethics

We offer the ability to combine your Gerontology degree with a degree in Women's Studies or Psychology. The departments of Social Work and Sociology also offer Major Concentrations in Gerontology.

Our Water Resource Science program is the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada, and will provide you with the necessary skills and scientific knowledge to protect and advocate for our most valuable resource. 

The study of Water Resource Science emphasizes how the ecology, physical processes and chemistry of natural systems interact and produce the diverse environments present on Earth. As a student, you will learn:

• The biological, physical and chemical aspects of aqueous systems

Human Resources Management is the specific process of staffing, training, developing, motivating, and appraising a sufficient quantity of qualified employees to perform activities necessary to accomplish organizational objectives. It involves developing precise activities and an overall organizational climate to generate maximum employee satisfaction and efficiency.

Industrial Relations involves managing the relationship between union and non-union workers in all work settings. Course work emphasizes the unionization process, collective bargaining, the collective agreement, and mediation/arbitration. As a Human Resources Management/Industrial Relations major, you will learn skills essential to supervising or managing others, including interpersonal communication, problem-solving and decision making, conflict resolution, training, and negotiation.
