A horticultural technician works with plants and has knowledge and skills in ornamental horticulture and plant health care. Using tools and machinery, this person installs, grows and maintains indoor and outdoor plants; builds urban and rural landscapes; maintains outdoor properties; cares for turf grass and golf courses; and installs and maintains irrigation systems. The fundamentals of grounds keeping, including safe snow and ice removal, as well as sustainable agriculture practices and green technologies are also introduced.

Learning emphasizes practical hands-on work during a major carpentry, new construction or renovation building project:

• Practise your skills in carpentry and construction including, rough carpentry/framing, finish carpentry, base footings, insulation, vapour and air barriers, drywalling, window and door installation, interior and exterior finishes, fine finishing techniques, and roofing.
• Study building codes, work from blueprints, produce basic sketches, develop building details and create computer-assisted drawings using AutoCAD and SketchUp.
• Receive hands-on instruction in environmentally sound construction techniques, proper tool usage and jobsite safety.
• Second-year students develop advanced techniques in sustainable and alternative building, sustainable construction, green build and healthy homes, i.e., low VOC (volatile organic compounds), electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.  
• Obtain industry-required certificates such as Working at Heights and First Aid.

• Follow projects from the engineering drawings stage, through cutting and forming processes, to the completion of the job and quality inspection.

• Practise welding techniques such as gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
• Participate in the Ontario Skills Competition and field trips to the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show.
• Expand your theoretical and practical skill set, along with in-depth trade practices and job planning skills, in the two-year diploma program.

By integrating science and engineering concepts with industry-specific technologies, civil engineering technicians and technologists assist in the monitoring and inspection of civil infrastructure projects. This well-rounded program combines classroom instruction, hands-on learning, both outside (in the field) and inside, in our Building Sciences Lab using industry standard equipment.

Get a strong foundation in surveying techniques, drafting principles and computer applications, using programs such as AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Gain skills in structural, municipal and highway design, drafting, materials testing, surveying, inspection, construction supervision and project estimating, to name a few.
Year one is common with the Construction Engineering Technician program, allowing for ease of transfer.

Biotechnology plays a critical role in the battles against hunger, disease and pollution. It is used in developing precision medicines and gene therapies, environmental decontamination to restore polluted spaces and engineering crops to improve their yield and nutrition.
