The bachelor of physical education degree is designed to prepare graduates for careers in teaching and related areas.

Teaching Option:-
The teaching option contains courses in the fundamentals of physical education as well as courses in curriculum planning, teaching methods, and pedagogy relevant to physical education curricula for various grade levels. You will be placed in an educational setting for some of the course work.  

Following completion of a physical education degree - teaching option, a student wishing to teach in a school setting will need to compete either the primary/elementary (as a second degree) or intermediate/secondary degree offered by the Faculty of Education.
 

General Option
The general option is designed to provide basic professional preparation. This program option consists of courses common to the teaching option plus a flexible choice of complementary study courses.

Combine exciting classroom learning and real-world business experience with Memorial’s bachelor of commerce (co-operative) (B.Comm.(Co-op.)).

Students alternate academic semesters with work placements in industry, government or private organizations. Students will apply classroom studies to real-world settings and develop practical skills for today’s business environment.

Anthropology is the study of the origins of human beings and their culture worldwide. In addition to documenting a particular culture, anthropologists are interested in how and why human cultures change. Anthropology students at Memorial University will focus on core concepts, theoretical perspectives and case studies while examining a wide range of issues that exist in the contemporary world. 

Why study anthropology?
Anthropology courses provide a strong background if you intend to specialize in any of the social sciences and humanities or in medicine, nursing, social work, education, law, business, government and many other fields which require a cross-cultural understanding of human behaviour. 

Anthropology at Memorial
Our Faculty have addressed a wide range of important topics, including the Northern Ireland Peace Process, the political transformation that took place in Spain after the fall of Franco’s fascist regime, the politics of authenticity in Newfoundland’s fishing and tourism industries, historical memory of the Vietnam war, issues of development in Latin America, and social and political struggles over access to ocean spaces and resources.

The major in criminology, administered by the Department of Sociology, aims to promote the academic study of different facets of criminal justice organizations and practices, including the legal, political and social contexts in which they operate. This program would be beneficial for students with a scholarly interest in deviant/criminal behaviour, social justice and legal issues, policing, corrections, law enforcement, rehabilitation, and criminal justice themes more broadly, including those who have completed the diploma in police studies; experienced police officers; and others working in a policing, correctional, or criminal justice environment. The major in criminology does not constitute a qualification in policing or corrections.

The criminology major promotes critical thinking about the legal, political, and social influences that impact crime and society, and our criminal justice system. This program would be beneficial if you have a scholarly interest in policing, the courts, corrections, or another facet of the justice system. Our faculty work closely with our local, national, and international communities and we offer many courses through distance learning to specifically respond to the demands of social/justice system work.

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind and language. Philosophers aim to understand reality, clarify the nature of interactions between individuals and society, and to come to terms with problems of existence and ultimate value.

Memorial’s Department of Philosophy aims to develop students’ intellectual abilities through examining different answers that philosophers have given to fundamental questions in order to develop a critical and systemic approach toward investigating reality and experience that relies on reasoned arguments.

Computer engineering is a fast-changing discipline concerned with the design and analysis of computer systems applied to the solution of practical problems. It encompasses both computer hardware and software design in applications ranging from telecommunications and information systems (such as the Internet or telephone networks) to instrumentation and robotics.

Computer engineering at Memorial includes a mandatory, integrated co-operative education program in which students gain up to two years of practical work experience. You will take courses in computer hardware, software and communications systems and learn about circuit analysis, systems and signals, digital logic design, electronics, software design and implementation, computer architecture and microprocessors, computer networking, concurrent programming and real-time operating systems. You will participate in design projects throughout the program, including a team capstone design project in your final year that may span computer and electrical engineering and involve students from both majors.

Energy systems engineering is a critical area in need of innovation and highly qualified personnel. The need for readily available and high quality energy is expanding in Newfoundland and Labrador and globally, which has created a worldwide demand for professional training at the graduate level in areas related to the energy industry. The demand for sustainable energy, as well as the environmental concerns of traditional techniques require significant innovation in energy systems engineering.

To develop more sustainable techniques requires research and innovation to achieve energy production and utilization that is financially viable, readily available and environmentally benign. This program is inter-disciplinary. It addresses the complexity and required expertise in several technical disciplines by the industry.

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language through exploring language structure, language variation, language change, the development of language, as well as through the exploration of the psychology and biology of language. Linguistics evaluates the different facets of language, like childhood acquisition of language, the sounds of language and the ways in which social groups use language.

Memorial has the only linguistics department in Atlantic Canada. Through our data-driven, theoretically informed inquiry into aboriginal languages, we explore variation and change in language and its acquisition. Memorial is host to exceptional in-house data archives, broad library holdings and state-of-the-art labs and analytical tools.

A five-year co-operative degree program composed of eight full-time academic terms and a minimum of four full-time work terms. You will have the opportunity to apply the engineering concepts and theories you learn in the classrooms and laboratories to the real world as you complete work terms that will give you the equivalent of up to two years of real engineering work experience prior to graduation.

Beginning in the second year of the program, you will specialize in one of six available majors:

• Civil engineering
• Computer engineering
• Electrical engineering
• Mechanical engineering
• Ocean and naval architectural engineering
• Process engineering

Students will be introduced to each of the disciplines to aid in selecting their preference prior to Term 3. Focus streams in biomedical engineering are available in the Computer, Electrical and Mechanical programs.

Program Structure

• The common first year of our engineering program is referred to as Engineering One. You will study mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering fundamentals which are common to each of the majors we offer. Courses in Engineering One will introduce you to engineering problem-solving, analysis, design, communication and teamwork. You will develop an understanding of different engineering fields and how engineering relates to real world issues.
• At the end of the first year, you must apply for your major. In the second year of the program, you begin alternating between academic terms and work terms in the fall, winter and spring semesters.

The bachelor of music is a four year program that combines the highest musical excellence in an intimate setting of student and faculty collaboration. Students accepted to the bachelor of music have the option to pursue a joint bachelor of music and bachelor of business administration degree.
