This program is ideally suited for students who have not completed the Grade 12 courses as required for admission to many diploma programs.

    • Prepare a signage and pavement marking plan to local guidelines (e.g. the Ontario Traffic Manual)
    • Research various sources of information. Prepare detailed inventories in the form of maps, charts, graphs and spreadsheets
    • Do analyses of information such as:
      • Capacity of uninterrupted flow facilities
      • Parking activities
      • Public transit operations on a limited basis
      • Produce a simple roadway geometric design task
      • Evaluate transit planning decisions in relation to bus stops and network design
  • After four semesters, and experience from the first work term, a student will be able to do more extensive assignments (Usually in time for a Fall co-op):
    • Analysis of information such as:
      • Capacity of interrupted flow facilities using leading industry software (Synchro and PTV Vistro)
      • Design pedestrian and cycling facilities to local guidelines (e.g. The Ontario Traffic Manual and the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads)
      • Interpret the Ontario Planning Act as related to transportation engineering technology
      • Produce a roadway geometric design in computer-aided drafting software (both AutoCAD and Civil3D)
      • Understand the basics of construction management for a simple project
      • Prepare minor reports presenting a problem, alternative solutions, and recommended course action
  • After five semesters, a student will have enough knowledge and skill for the following (Usually in time for a Summer co-op):
    • Make a functional design of an intersection and a roundabout
    • Perform advanced spreadsheet functions, including the use of macros
    • Determine the transportation impacts of a proposed development:
    • Write a report on findings and suggest remedial measures
    • Avoid degradation in the level of service (LOS)
    • Use traffic capacity analysis software (Synchro or PTV Vistro)
    • Perform limited GIS queries and analysis
