At Nipissing you have the option to focus on one of our four streams: Policing, Corrections, Criminology or Criminal Justice Studies. Our flexible program is designed to give you a balanced combination of theory and practice. Through field placements, projects, and research, you will have opportunities to work alongside real criminal justice professionals.

In the Criminology stream, you will learn how to understand essential theories and methodologies used in the Criminology field. This stream gives you essential skills in communication, statistics, and analysis. We regularly offer courses in special topics like Women and the Criminal Justice System, and Youth in Conflict with the Law.

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.

Boost your resume with a specialty credential in finance geared toward one of Canada’s fastest-growing industries. In the two-year in-depth Finance Post-Baccalaureate Diploma program, you’ll acquire financial literacy, a strong foundation in investment analysis and portfolio management, and an understanding of business and financial law. Once you graduate, you’ll be prepared to take on roles such as financial planner, and financial or investment analyst.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Finance, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 30 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

If you choose to study Sociology—the study of human societies—you’ll be entering into a fascinatingly broad discipline. Accounting is about more than financial controls and reporting — it’s also about fiscal and social responsibility. Accounting professionals need to show due diligence, and to think and act ethically when they evaluate options. You will be challenged to think not only about the shareholders, but all stakeholders when making decisions. You will learn the uses and limitations of accounting information through case studies, simulation, and hands-on learning experiences. You will gain an understanding of many topics, including auditing, information systems auditing, taxation, consolidation, not-for-profit accounting, hedges, and foreign exchange within your advanced accounting courses. You will participate in tax clinics, where accounting students prepare tax returns for low-income households and perform “mock audits” on local not-for-profit organizations. You will have help preparing for the CPA professional examinations. This combination of social awareness, academic vigor, practical experience, and support is what helps our graduates succeed in today’s marketplace.

Economics at Nipissing will introduce you to theories and economic models that will give you a solid framework for understanding how the world works. The structure of the Canadian economy, public policy, money, banking and financial institutions, the labour market, and the inter-dependence of nations in the global economy are all topics you will come to grasp with confidence.

You will be introduced to theories and policies related to Canadian and international economic development, and will examine social science issues like poverty, inequality, education, health, migration, agriculture and foreign aid.

Nipissing’s Master of Environmental Sciences (MESc)/Master of Environmental Studies (MES) programs take a unique interdisciplinary approach by integrating ideas and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to explore and address environmental issues. The programs consist of course work plus a Major Research Paper (one-year program) or coursework plus a Thesis (two-year program), and are offered on a full-time, flex-time or part-time basis. Students gain a broadly-based background in the study of the environment, and develop their own original research project in the context of current and future environmental challenges.

Our core courses are team-taught to provide a range of perspectives. Elective courses in the MESc program focus on topics such as environmental monitoring, forest ecology, watershed hydrology, and air and water pollutant chemistry. Elective courses in the MES program include the environmental history of land and subsistence, global environmental history, histories of environmental thought and watershed management. Our high faculty-to-student ratio provides a collaborative and supportive environment. Graduate students are paired with supervisors from one of several academic departments (Biology and Chemistry; Geography; History) who have a keen interest in and understanding of the field in which students will carry out their research projects. Students also have the opportunity to work alongside these faculty members as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses, and as research assistants. Depending on the research topic, students may also elect to have a co-supervisor, who may be from a different discipline.

Whether you choose the primary/junior, junior/intermediate or intermediate/senior division, we will ensure that we provide you with placements that fulfill the requirements of your program and the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers.

In your second year, use the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired, in a 60-hour community leadership experience. You may choose to participate in an international or domestic practicum arranged by Nipissing University or focus your interests closer to home within Ontario. Previous international and domestic locations have included Costa Rica, Kenya, France, and Trois Pistoles, Quebec. Experiences within Ontario have included placements in organizations such as museums, outdoor education centres, and correction centres. Whether teaching internationally or working with a local organization, you will get to explore the teaching and learning opportunities that exist outside of traditional classrooms.

At Nipissing, we combine a strong foundation of academic theory with an emphasis on research.
