Over the course of the two-year Bachelor of Education degree program, you will gain practical, hands-on experience through 20 weeks of practicum in a variety of Ontario classrooms. Whether you choose the primary/junior, junior/intermediate or intermediate/senior division, we will ensure that we provide you with placements that fulfill the requirements of your program and the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers.

In your second year, use the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired, in a 60-hour community leadership experience. You may choose to participate in an international or domestic practicum arranged by Nipissing University or focus your interests closer to home within Ontario. Previous international and domestic locations have included Costa Rica, Kenya, France, and Trois Pistoles, Quebec. Experiences within Ontario have included placements in organizations such as museums, outdoor education centres, and correction centres. Whether teaching internationally or working with a local organization, you will get to explore the teaching and learning opportunities that exist outside of traditional classrooms.

Native Studies offers you an opportunity to learn about Native cultures, philosophies, literature, histories, and contemporary issues that are central to this land that we live in. Its multidisciplinary approach reflects the different directions of the Medicine Wheel, so your studies will include the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects that are needed for true learning according to indigenous thought.

Built upon traditional First Nations land and with a number of First Nations communities in the area, North Bay and Nipissing University are significant centres of aboriginal nfluence and activity. It would be challenging to find a more appropriate or ideal place than Nipissing to study and engage with a diversity of native cultures, communities, and organizations.

Our program welcomes both Native and non-Native students in an inclusive, side-by-side learning environment. By studying at Nipissing, you will get a first-rate academic experience, and you will also be immersed in local Native communities (both urban and rural). You will have access to and learn from many aboriginal organizations and services in the North Bay area including the North Bay Métis Council and the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre. Marketing influences many of our decisions, from small day-to-day decisions like what to eat for lunch, to large important decisions like what kind of car to buy or choosing a university. Marketing is about more than advertising and promotion—it’s also about making strategic decisions about products/ services, pricing, and distribution. In the marketing stream, you will develop the critical thinking skills you need to make good managerial decisions in a competitive marketplace. You will learn fundamental marketing concepts, research methods, market analysis, and strategies related to consumer behaviour, brand management, and business-to-business marketing. You will also learn about marketing communication, promotions, merchandising, public relations, packaging, as well as, direct and digital marketing. True to our more-than-a-degree promise, you will have plenty of opportunities to apply communication and interaction skills and to develop leadership, negotiation, and team management skills. The Marketing Stream offers a variety of elective courses in specialized areas such as sport, social marketing, international marketing, sales management, and innovative marketing. The marketing specialization is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Marketing.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in General Management is a one year program designed for adult learners who have completed a bachelor-level degree, and who are looking for a pathway to professional employment in the business profession.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in General Management, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 15 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

This degree program examines political topics that range from the foundations of international relations and foreign policy to Canadian politics.

The Political Science Program at Nipissing University offers courses of study in Political Theory, Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Public Administration.

If politics is a form of association directed towards what a community holds to be good - their common purpose - then political science is the reflective study on those various purposes as well as of the means or methods chosen to achieve them.

At Nipissing you have the option to focus on one of our four streams: Policing, Corrections, Criminology or Criminal Justice Studies. Our flexible program is designed to give you a balanced combination of theory and practice. Through field placements, projects, and research, you will have opportunities to work alongside real criminal justice professionals.

In the Criminology stream, you will learn how to understand essential theories and methodologies used in the Criminology field. This stream gives you essential skills in communication, statistics, and analysis. We regularly offer courses in special topics like Women and the Criminal Justice System, and Youth in Conflict with the Law.

The Bachelor of Social Work program at Nipissing University is committed to preparing students for generalist social work practice that is characterized by high ethical standards, critical thinking, creativity, research-mindedness and the promotion of human rights, inclusion and equality. The principles of anti-oppressive practice underpin our program’s particular emphasis on social work with diverse identities in northern, rural and remote contexts including Indigenous and Franco-Ontarian communities. Our Bachelor of Social Work program has earned pre-accreditation status from the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE-ACFTS). 

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.

The Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resources Management is a two year program designed for adult learners who have completed a bachelor-level degree, and who are looking for a pathway to professional employment in the human resources management profession.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resource Management, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 30 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

The Finance stream is a great option for students interested in pursuing a career in the dynamic financial sector. Depending on their interests and career goals, students in the finance stream may elect to choose between one of two focus areas: Entrepreneurial Finance and Financial Product Sales. Students pursuing the Entrepreneurial Finance path will learn how to raise funds for start-up businesses, create realistic financial plans, effectively manage a firm’s cash flows, and interact effectively with banks and investors. This path will prepare students for financial roles in small businesses, entrepreneurial firms or commercial banking. Such positions could include financial managers, credit specialists, controller positions, etc. Those following the Financial Product Sales Specialist path will learn about a large variety of financial products and services existing in modern markets, how to create good financial portfolios based on a client’s risk preferences and how to adjust financial strategies taking into account age, career situation and family situation. They will also learn about new areas such as wealth management including real estate, inheritance issues, tax strategies, etc. This path will prepare students to work in areas such as financial products sales, insurance and financial advising, among others. Students enrolled in the finance stream have the option to work towards a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Finance or Certificate in Financial Product Sales.

Nipissing University's Bachelor of Education (BEd) program was one of the first pre-service teacher education programs to be fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is part of our Schulich School of Education and meets the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers for teacher certification (Certificate of Qualification). It is open to applicants presenting proof of graduation with an approved undergraduate degree from an accredited university. The program provided by the Schulich School of Education is rigorous and demands a high degree of commitment. To be successful, a student must display sensitivity to pupils, a sense of responsibility to the teaching profession, and a respect for knowledge.
