The Psychology Department offers a full slate of courses that cover all major areas of the discipline.

Students can choose between the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs when they study Psychology at Nipissing University. The main difference between the two degree options is in the electives you choose. BA students will take humanities and social science elective courses (e.g., English, Philosophy, Criminal Justice, Sociology, and History), while BSc students will take electives from the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics). The BSc program offers the possibility of adding a Certificate in Neuroscience when certain courses are combined with an Honours thesis in a Neuroscience area. The BA program offers a Certificate in Early Intensive Behaviour Intervention – Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Accounting professionals need to show due diligence, and to think and act ethically when they evaluate options. You will be challenged to think not only about the shareholders, but all stakeholders when making decisions. You will learn the uses and limitations of accounting information through case studies, simulation, and hands-on learning experiences. You will gain an understanding of many topics, including auditing, information systems auditing, taxation, consolidation, not-for-profit accounting, hedges, and foreign exchange within your advanced accounting courses. You will participate in tax clinics, where accounting students prepare tax returns for low-income households and perform “mock audits” on local not-for-profit organizations. You will have help preparing for the CPA professional examinations. This combination of social awareness, academic vigor, practical experience, and support is what helps our graduates succeed in today’s marketplace.

Marketing influences many of our decisions, from small day-to-day decisions like what to eat for lunch, to large important decisions like what kind of car to buy or choosing a university. Marketing is about more than advertising and promotion—it’s also about making strategic decisions about products/ services, pricing, and distribution. In the marketing stream, you will develop the critical thinking skills you need to make good managerial decisions in a competitive marketplace. You will learn fundamental marketing concepts, research methods, market analysis, and strategies related to consumer behaviour, brand management, and business-to-business marketing. You will also learn about marketing communication, promotions, merchandising, public relations, packaging, as well as, direct and digital marketing. True to our more-than-a-degree promise, you will have plenty of opportunities to apply communication and interaction skills and to develop leadership, negotiation, and team management skills. The Marketing Stream offers a variety of elective courses in specialized areas such as sport, social marketing, international marketing, sales management, and innovative marketing. The marketing specialization is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Marketing.

Welcome to the Child and Family Studies (CHFS) program within the School of Human and Social Development at Nipissing University. The Child and Family Studies Program is unique with a particular focus on two thematic areas of study:

• Human Development and Learning; and
• Child and Family Well-Being: Issues, Services, and Social Justice. Students can pursue a Major, Specialization or Honours Specialization

Further, you want a career within child and adult developmental and/or behaviour services, health/mental health services, child welfare, education, justice, government, or even the private sector, and have a real appetite for social justice and making a significant difference. You may choose to complete one of our 2 Applied Certificates in Applied Behaviour Analysis or our Program Evaluation and Applied Research Certificate (PEAR) as you learn to improve systems and services for children, youth, or adults, across the social and human services sector.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in General Management is a one year program designed for adult learners who have completed a bachelor-level degree, and who are looking for a pathway to professional employment in the business profession.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in General Management, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 15 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

Nipissing’s Master of Environmental Sciences (MESc)/Master of Environmental Studies (MES) programs take a unique interdisciplinary approach by integrating ideas and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to explore and address environmental issues. The programs consist of course work plus a Major Research Paper (one-year program) or coursework plus a Thesis (two-year program), and are offered on a full-time, flex-time or part-time basis. Students gain a broadly-based background in the study of the environment, and develop their own original research project in the context of current and future environmental challenges.

Our core courses are team-taught to provide a range of perspectives. Elective courses in the MESc program focus on topics such as environmental monitoring, forest ecology, watershed hydrology, and air and water pollutant chemistry. Elective courses in the MES program include the environmental history of land and subsistence, global environmental history, histories of environmental thought and watershed management. Our high faculty-to-student ratio provides a collaborative and supportive environment. Graduate students are paired with supervisors from one of several academic departments (Biology and Chemistry; Geography; History) who have a keen interest in and understanding of the field in which students will carry out their research projects. Students also have the opportunity to work alongside these faculty members as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses, and as research assistants. Depending on the research topic, students may also elect to have a co-supervisor, who may be from a different discipline.

As a student registered with any of the three major areas of study in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Nipissing University (AHVS, Studio, and Film), you will have access to unique research and exhibition opportunities that foster professional development through exciting and interactive collaborative ventures with senior artists, gallery owners and community leaders. Rather than being concerned with a particular set of questions or a particular period of time, philosophy concerns itself with the nature of inquiry, thought, and argument itself, asking how each of these operates in the various areas of human life, from ethics and politics to the study of nature and reality. This means that philosophy students take up the truly big questions: What is the best life? Why should we be moral? How is knowledge possible? Is the world really as it appears to us? How does the mind work? At the same time, the skills students develop in pursuit of a degree in philosophy – careful reading, charitable interpretation and discussion, and rigorous argumentation – have proven themselves to be useful in innumerable fields within and beyond the university.

The Philosophy Program at Nipissing is small and student-focused: with an average of 35 full-time majors, students get to know and work closely with both their professors and their peers. The department is particularly committed to introducing students to the history of philosophy, from the ancient period to the present. The program is designed to work well either as a stand-alone degree or as a combined degree with other programs, and there are numerous philosophy courses offered each year that do not have prerequisites and that are popular electives for students in other programs.​
