The Business – Human Resources program will prepare students to participate in staffing, performance management, training, employee relations, health and safety, and benefits and compensation administration functions. Students will develop skills in communication, information technology, and teamwork, and will learn organizational development strategies to support the human resources activities of an organization.

The technician is part of the engineering team, involved in all aspects of mining from exploration, planning, development and operation, to mineral extraction and environmental control. This program is offered in a modular distance – education format that allows you to take courses from the comfort of your home, avoid long commutes, minimize accommodation and living costs while studying, maintain your employment, as well as develop sound communication and computer skills. Distance theory education is coupled with yearly field school components which are held at the Haileybury campus during the spring

The Medical Laboratory Technician program provides students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to work in a medical laboratory. Students will receive education and training in specimen collection and processing, the administration of ECG’s, set up of Holter monitors, and the use of laboratory equipment while developing the professional attitude and demeanor needed for close patient contact. Students will have the opportunity to perform a variety of lab functions both within the simulated on site medical laboratory and during clinical practicums within both community and hospital laboratories. Upon successful completion of all courses outlined in the program of study, students are eligible to write the Examination for Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician with the OSMT.

Practically all businesses depend on Information Technology. There is a growing need for companies to understand and strategically manage huge quantities of information allowing them to grow and maintain a competitive edge in industry. This has created a need for professionals with knowledge skill sets in both the business and technology fields individuals who can turn a vision into a reality. Computers, the Internet, wireless communications, databases are all forms of information technology which are used to collect, analyze, and share information. Information systems management examines how this technology can be used effectively in a constantly changing business environment. The Information Systems Business Analysis program (ISBA) will help you develop critical skills in areas such as: application software, business data analysis and modeling, customer engagement management, business processes, enterprise resource planning, and communications. A fundamental part of the post-graduate ISBA is the opportunity for experiential learning integrated with in program. Students will have the opportunity to engage in the practice of business analysis for information technology (IT) by working through case studies and industry projects.

Employment Opportunities exist with in the Business or Technology sectors as: business or management information systems analysts, or information technology professionals. Work for banks, manufacturing, businesses within the private or the public service sector.

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are professionals who are part of a multidisciplinary team that may include behavioural therapists, speech pathologists, consultants, parents and school representatives. They assist children to make a successful transition to, and integration into the school system. In addition to working with infants and children up to 12 years old, Early Childhood Educators will also be part of a team and expected to work in a professional and competent manner with staff, parents, and community members. Graduates require good communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as sound judgment.

Besides planning and conducting the regular routines of the day, students will have the opportunity to observe children to determine their present skill level in each developmental area. Students will research, plan, carry out and evaluate a full range of program and curriculum activities designed to help each child reach his/her full developmental potential. A distinct feature of the program is the opportunity it offers students to gain practical work experience in a variety of settings: day care centres, nursery schools, parent resource centres, toy-lending libraries, junior and senior kindergartens, and before- and after-school programs throughout the community.

Children’s Play Lab
The Children’s Play Lab provides students with the opportunity to design, setup, monitor and make improvements to an early years learning environment. Partnerships with local early learning centres will provide our students with the unique opportunity to work closely with young children in a controlled environment.

Our Police Foundations Program is geared to provide an exciting learning experience for all our students. Academic studies combined with hands on realistic training gives our students the skills and knowledge they will need in furthering their goals of obtaining a career in law enforcement. Due to our smaller class sizes the students have the access to instructors and learning material that helps them to be successful in their studies.

Our instructors are serving and retired officers from Timmins Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. Northern College has a great partnership with both the Timmins Police Service and the O.P.P as well as the Monteith Correctional center.

Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with the O.P.P. in their block training during winter semesters. This is a chance to see firsthand officer training and gain networking accessibility.

In the fall of 2018 our new Integrated Emergency Services building was open. Along with state of the art class rooms we have a jail cell, cruiser bay, interview room, fingerprint and mugshot room, as well as a full size court room. Our facility also has a training lab along with a full training apartment to run scenarios. Outside is a training intersection for scenario use by all our emergency services program.

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program prepares graduates for success in professional health career programs. This program provides an admissions pathway into the Bachelor of Science – Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic programs at Northern College. It also provides admission requirements for most health career programs offered at other Ontario community colleges and is a partner in several university articulation agreements.

Electrical Engineering Technicians work in the areas of installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair, as well as analyzing and troubleshooting a variety of electrical circuits, equipment and systems. In addition, graduates will be able to participate in quality control and quality assurance programs and apply communication, documentation, computer information technology, and teamwork skills to support the engineering activities of an organization. Technicians maintain power generation stations and transmission lines and work in areas such as protection, industrial telecommunications, electrical maintenance and installation, and control systems. Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They will learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering Degree Program at Lakehead University.

This four-semester program provides the skills and knowledge needed to deliver emergency care in the pre-hospital setting. Classroom components emphasizing biological science, humanities and ambulance services provide the theoretical basis for the interventions required to deal with medical or trauma emergencies. Emphasis is placed on the ability to communicate well with patients, families and health care professionals and to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary health care team. Clinical labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through assessment and the provision of a primary level of care.
