Northern’s Business – Marketing program is angled towards E-commerce and is designed to equip students with an array of high-tech marketing skills. They will learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. The first year of this program will provide students with a solid and essential foundation in business. In the second year, they will be immersed in the world of marketing and E-commerce. Earn an Advanced Ontario Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology in only two years instead of three. We belong to a society of builders. Wherever humans have put down roots, they have raised roofs, walls and monuments to mark their places in space and time. Builders do something no other occupation can accomplish: they change the face of our world. There are technicians and technologists at every point along the building process. Civil engineering technologists assist in recommending design parameters to engineers, conduct inspections of structures, perform tests on soils, concrete or other building materials, analyze results of tests, prepare statistical data, tables and drawings, and supervise construction projects. Students will learn to draw, design and inspect structures in buildings and highways, perform tests on soils and concrete, and survey using the latest equipment. During their second year, they will complete an independent technical report related to civil engineering.

The Ontario Building Code sets out the minimum safety requirements regarding public health, fire protection and structural sufficiency. This program has been developed to assist those students that enter the design, inspection or construction industry to interpret and apply code requirements correctly. The Building Inspection Technician Program is a two-year program that includes academic, technical, and code skills. Along with a foundation of building code courses, the placement component will be an integral feature of the program.

The acceleration of technology will continue to transform how organizations operate and how individuals in the economy interact to create value. The skill set needed by business professionals in the age of digital transformation is the focus of the two-year Diploma program on Global Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (GBET). Knowledge and skills from these three specialty areas will enable graduates to assume key roles in business management and new venture creations. The first year of the two-year diploma program begins with the Business Fundamentals certificate courses, which form the common core of all Northern College’s Business programs. In the second year of the program students will begin their specialty studies in the programs three specialty areas. Student having completed the business fundamentals program may complete the second year of the GBET program to earn their diploma.

Students studying Computer Science will gain a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the study of algorithms, programming languages, hardware architecture, systems software, application software, and tools. They will also develop a solid foundation in data structure, programming, assembly language programming, computer organization, operating systems, theory, software engineering, and computer networking. Students also have the opportunity to explore their individual interests and take courses in artificial intelligence, human-computer interactions, and web data management, among others!

Above all, our computer science program values and encourages creativity and innovation. Students are given the opportunity to create new designs and explore their creative and unique ideas with faculty who are excited and equipped to guide students in the process of exploration.

Our students explore how Computer Science reaches far beyond theory and practice, driving innovation in the sciences, with examples such as the Human Genome Project and AIDs vaccine research, and leading developments in engineering, business, entertainment, and education. What is particularly unique about studies in Computer Science is that experiments can be carried out in a simulated virtual laboratory. Your creativity needs no limits because even ideas that, for now, exist outside of the realm of physical possibility, can be carried out in a computer lab. Computer scientists can simulate outcomes before they happen, including mapping out natural disasters and population growth under a variety of different circumstances.

Students who are admitted in this program, can obtain Northern's 2-year diploma when they complete the four semesters of Northern's courses and they can also obtain a bachelor degree of Algoma University if they successfully complete the 7 semester courses.

Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.

The Mobile Application Development Graduate Certificate program prepares students for careers in the expanding and evolving fields of mobile web and application development. The latest mobile devices and applications are changing the way we communicate, do business, and access news and entertainment, creating exciting and innovative career and business opportunities. The program will offer students a strong practical background in mobile solutions design and development that encompasses different devices, operating systems, database and network infrastructures, as well as coverage of software quality and the security aspects to mobile solution development. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to develop their own mobile applications for each platform.

Nursing is a profession that provides opportunities for specialization, team work, leadership and personal growth. Nursing promotes partnerships with other health care professionals in caring for clients and families across the lifespan through a variety of health care settings. Northern College is one of the partners in the Laurentian University BScN Collaborative Program and, as part of this partnership with Laurentian University, our nursing students are able to complete all four years of the BScN program at Northern.

Northern College’s nursing program provides opportunities for students to practice nursing skills in state of the art nursing practice labs equipped with integrative simulation equipment. This latest technology will assist in preparing students for actual client care through simulated medical scenarios. Our nursing program also incorporates new technologies, such as specialized software packages and web-based tools, many of which are used in health-care settings. Learning experiences will be enhanced through cooperation and consultation with faculty and peers through shared activities. Northern also utilizes its on-site Family Health Team clinic, to provide an excellent opportunity for nursing students to experience community-based nursing first hand while working within an interdisciplinary health care team.

Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. Northern College values lifelong learning in an effort to maintain the current competencies outlined by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Computers and network systems are everywhere: in industry, business, vehicles, law enforcement, laboratories and homes. Computer engineering technicians are needed to support them! This program addresses many applications for computers including business analysis, networking and system security. Computer Engineering Technicians maintain software, systems and networks to improve life for society. This program prepares students to write exams for certifications such as Cisco (CCNA), CCNA Security, Networks +, A+ Certification, Server+ and Linux + Certification.
