This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of post-secondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

• Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
• Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
• Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
• Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
• Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.

Program Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:

• Develop communication skills to a level required by business and industry

• Develop a general knowledge of a variety of subjects that will contribute to developing insights into self and society
• Function successfully in a post-secondary educational environment
• Transfer the credits gained in approved courses towards a baccalaureate (B.A./B.Sc) at selected universities or to other college programs.

The first two years of the Electrical Engineering Technician program is identical to that of this program. Students who want to specialize in electrical technology continue studies an additional year to receive a greater depth of training and knowledge in Protection and Control, Control Systems, Electrical Design, Power Utility Systems and Programmable Logic Controls.
Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering degree program at Lakehead University. This one year graduate certificate will provide a comprehensive overview and working knowledge of the many facets of Emergency Management (Prevention, Mitigation, Response and Recovery), as well as the ever evolving world of Intelligence, Terrorism, Cybersecurity and Pandemic Planning. Graduates will be well prepared to take on leadership roles in municipal, provincial and federal response planning and coordination. Legislative frameworks, risk assessment and crisis communications curriculum will be complemented by unique courses in terrorism, pandemic/mass casualty planning, and cybersecurity.

Computers and network systems are everywhere: in industry, business, vehicles, law enforcement, laboratories and homes. Computer engineering technicians are needed to support them! This program addresses many applications for computers including business analysis, networking and system security. Computer Engineering Technicians maintain software, systems and networks to improve life for society. This program prepares students to write exams for certifications such as Cisco (CCNA), CCNA Security, Networks +, A+ Certification, Server+ and Linux + Certification.

Personal support workers are unregulated health care providers. They work under the supervision of a regulated health professional, supervisor, or in the supported independent living environment under the direction of the client. They provide clearly identified personal care, routine activities of daily living and home management services, by following care/service plans and established policies and procedures. Personal support workers are responsible for their work to their clients and to their employers. Workers providing long term care and support services form the backbone of both community and facility services. They are often the people with whom clients/consumers have the most contact and with whom they develop close relationships. The attitude and approach of workers and their abilities are critical to the well being, comfort, safety and health of the people they support.

Education to prepare support workers assists them to develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills, which emphasizes the value of their role and reflects true sensitivity and respect for the individuality of each consumer/client. This program was developed as part of the Ontario provincial government’s plan to reform long term care and support services provided to people living at home and in long term care facilities. The Personal Support Worker Program is a two semester program consisting of theory and clinical practice in both institutional and community settings

The Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program will prepare students for a career in fire-fighting, and features an on-campus live burn training facility to provide hands on practice for students in essential fire-fighting skills. This program provides applicants with the required knowledge and skills through vocational courses in fire fighting, generic skills and general education courses in order to enhance job performance as a firefighter. Students have the opportunity to consolidate and apply theoretical knowledge through lab and field placements within regional Fire Services. The three semesters of this program are offered consecutively. A dress code is in effect for all lab practice sessions and field placement activities. Students are required to purchase the student fire uniforms, crests, as well as basic personal fire boots and clothing items. Cost of additional supplies with required program textbooks is approximately $1,500.00. Fire turn-out gear will be provided by the College.

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are professionals who are part of a multidisciplinary team that may include behavioural therapists, speech pathologists, consultants, parents and school representatives. They assist children to make a successful transition to, and integration into the school system. In addition to working with infants and children up to 12 years old, Early Childhood Educators will also be part of a team and expected to work in a professional and competent manner with staff, parents, and community members. Graduates require good communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as sound judgment.

Besides planning and conducting the regular routines of the day, students will have the opportunity to observe children to determine their present skill level in each developmental area. Students will research, plan, carry out and evaluate a full range of program and curriculum activities designed to help each child reach his/her full developmental potential. A distinct feature of the program is the opportunity it offers students to gain practical work experience in a variety of settings: day care centres, nursery schools, parent resource centres, toy-lending libraries, junior and senior kindergartens, and before- and after-school programs throughout the community.

Children’s Play Lab
The Children’s Play Lab provides students with the opportunity to design, setup, monitor and make improvements to an early years learning environment. Partnerships with local early learning centres will provide our students with the unique opportunity to work closely with young children in a controlled environment.

By connecting businesses and consumers into a single global market, the Internet has become a powerful marketing tool. Northern’s Business – Marketing program is angled towards E-commerce and is designed to equip students with an array of high-tech marketing skills. They will learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. The first year of this program will provide students with a solid and essential foundation in business. In the second year, they will be immersed in the world of marketing and E-commerce. The Ontario Building Code sets out the minimum safety requirements regarding public health, fire protection and structural sufficiency. This program has been developed to assist those students that enter the design, inspection or construction industry to interpret and apply code requirements correctly. The Building Inspection Technician Program is a two-year program that includes academic, technical, and code skills. Along with a foundation of building code courses, the placement component will be an integral feature of the program.
