Forensic Science is an interdisciplinary area of science that involves the use of scientific principles to analyze evidence for legal investigations. Our program is fully accredited by the Forensic Science Education Program Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) recognizing that our curriculum, labs, faculty and research have met the rigorous standards set by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS).

You will benefit from both a strong general scientific foundation and forensic courses. Students gain real-world experiences and unique hands-on training at the Crime Scene House, Forensic Ecology Research Facility and Forensic Teaching Laboratory.

At the end of first year, you will choose to specialize in one of the following areas:-
Forensic Biology:- Forensic biology spans a multitude of applications of biological evidence, such as blood and other body fluids, hairs, botanical remains, microbes and insects, to criminal, civil and regulatory law investigations and prosecutions. You will learn how forensic biology plays a crucial role in the justice system through courses such as Population Genetics and Forensic Biology.

Forensic Chemistry:- Forensic Chemistry encompasses numerous disciplines including paint analysis, arson and fire debris investigations, explosives analysis, fibre and textile testing as well as the subdiscipline of toxicology, the study of drugs and poisons.You will further your skills in analytical instrumentation, the analysis of fire accelerants and toxicology through courses such as Instrumental Analytical Chemistry and Fire Investigation.

Forensic Physics:- The discipline of forensic physics describes the application of the scientific study of matter, motion and energy to forensic investigations of many types, including ballistics, accident reconstruction, metal strength and damage analysis, and optical and acoustic analyses. Courses such as Electricity and Magnetism, and Forensic Physics will help you understand forensic materials analysis as well as the mechanics of bloodstain patterns and vehicle collision investigations.

Experiential learning:-
Students in their graduating year will complete either an independent Thesis Research project, Directed Studies project, or Mock Crime Scenee Practicum.

The Thesis Research Project provides students with the opportunity, under the supervision of a faculty member or a forensic professional, to integrate and synthesize knowledge gained throughout their program of study. Students will prepare a written and oral thesis defense that includes a literature review, methods, results and significance of the research.

The Directed Studies Project requires independent research of a current topic in a specialized area of forensic science, including, but not restricted to, biology, chemistry, anthropology and the application of science to law. Students select topics from current research literature and prepare a review and critical appraisal of underlying experimental principles.

The Mock Crime Scene Practicum will allow students to investigate a simulated major crime scene, synthesizing the knowledge they have gained throughout the forensic science program. They will participate in all aspects of a forensic science investigation, from crime scene to lab, culminating with expert witness testimony in a mock court setting.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a specialization in our Chemistry program. Individuals interested in this specialization will apply directly to Pharmaceutical Chemistry through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using application code DSW.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry combines the study of drug discovery and development, pharmacology, analytical techniques, and drug chemistry.  The chemical design process and evaluation of potential future medications will be a prime focus of your studies. You will apply knowledge gained from course material, hands-on lab experiences and faculty research to the pharmaceutical industry.

The Mechanical Engineering program is one of the broadcast engineering disciplines. In this program, students will learn the principles of mechanical engineering—motion, energy, and force—and how these principles are used to design and build the world around us. Within this program, you can choose the Energy Engineering specialization or follow the comprehensive program. 

Energy Engineering 

• Energy engineering is increasingly focused on the efficient and environmentally responsible use of energy systems, as well as energy security and reliability. You will specialize in all aspects of energy, from its generation to its end use, including energy conversion, storage, transportation and distribution. 

Foundation year

• All Engineering students begin with a common foundation year, regardless of program of study. During the foundation year you will learn about the various Engineering programs available.

The Master of Business Analytics and AI (MBAI) prepares students for highly successful careers both in the private and public sector where data is used to make decisions.

The MBAI will give students insight in three main domains, which are applications of AI, Business Analytics and Management issues. Designed for graduates of Commerce or Business undergraduate degrees, this course-based professional Master program builds upon the core functional knowledge learned at the undergraduate level with a focus on advanced analytics and AI solutions to business problems.

The first of its kind in Durham Region, the MBAI is a market-driven degree in an in-demand field at the intersection of technology and business. Graduates from this program will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and networks needed to succeed in today’s workplace as well as the ability to adapt to the ever-evolving workplace of the future. Students will be able to develop their strengths in digital economy, data analytics and artificial intelligence, all while building community and expanding connections with reputable industry partners. 

With over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created every day, the need for graduates who understand how to work with data and help make sense of business, society and the planet is bigger than ever. Graduates will learn how to use the tools necessary to help leading organizations make sense of the past and predict the future using advanced analytics and AI. They will also be trained in how to manage the legal, ethical and moral issues surrounding the use of digital information in its many forms, including sensor data, images, text, voice and video.

By the end of this program, students will be able to:

• Design and construct appropriate analytics solutions to solve business problems for data-driven decision making.
• Conceptualize and produce impactful presentations to communicate complex information to various stakeholders using data driven storytelling.
• Examine, adapt, and appraise machine learning and AI models for business problems using commercial and open sourced technologies.
• Systematically examine implications of analytic models from multiple perspectives including identifying issues’ strategic value, business ethics, bias, privacy, trustworthiness and fairness.
• Analyze data and use principles of database design implementation and administration.
• Critically examine data quality and combine multiple data sources and formats in preparation of ingesting data into analytics models.
• Create solutions using AI and analytics in new and existing business processes.
• Systematically appraise and contract the significance and reliability of competing models and analytics methodologies.
• Develop an understanding of the complexity of a complete data modelling project lifecycle from recognition and scoping to model maintenance.

The Bachelor of Information Technology's Technology Management major offers a focus on information technology with a complementary set of business courses designed to meet the needs of today’s technology-enabled economy. The program will develop your skills in data analytics, information systems, change management, and data security.

This major is consistent with the university’s mandate and the Faculty of Business and Information Technology’s priority to be market-relevant. The focus on informatics integrates with research being conducted in the Informatics Research Institute and in associated incubators. It is a direct response to market demand for professionals with domain-specific knowledge and ICT-related skills. According to Statistics Canada (2008), the labour market for professionals with business informatics skills was an IT occupation that continued to thrive through the recession due to industry need.

Experiential learning

• To ensure student success, our university’s experiential learning approach aims at honing technical and business skills, as well as instilling employability skills such as accountability, adaptability, attitude, confidence, motivation, presentation, stress management, teamwork and time management. Students will secure the hands-on learning opportunities that help them transition to employment.

Gain practical, hands-on learning skills while studying the nervous system at the cellular level and compare it with behaviour amongst different animal groups.

This program offers a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of neuroscience, with an emphasis on strong foundational science and practical laboratory skills.

Taught by area experts from the Faculties of Science, Health Science, and Social Science and Humanities, you'll study the nervous system at the cellular level, understand its influences on functional circuits at the macroscopic level, and learn how this forms the basis of behaviour, movement and neurological diseases. You will explore neuroscience from an evolutionary perspective, including a comparative analysis of the nervous system and behaviour among different animal groups.  Your understanding of the function of the nervous system at the molecular, structural, behavioral, and cognitive levels, will be developed through interdisciplinary study and hands-on laboratory learning in the sciences. 

The only program of its kind in Canada, the Manufacturing Engineering program is about the design and improvement of high?tech systems for the production and manufacturing of products. This includes the development and application of advanced technologies such as robotics, automation, new materials and intelligent controls.

• Optional internship and co-op placements provide you with the opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience.

From the experimental to the theoretical, our program exposes you to all major fields of chemistry: physical, analytical, organic, inorganic and chemical biology.
Students in our program gain important problem-solving skills for the 21st century. Graduates may also pursue advanced degrees in medicine, law, business, education, and research-based Master of Science and PhD programs.

• Chemical Biology
  • Chemical biology, at the interface of chemistry and biology, is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary area in science. Through the synthesis and use of small molecules, probes, or chemically?modified biological macromolecules, chemistry is applied to help answer questions of biological importance.
• Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry combines the study of drug discovery and development, pharmacology, analytical techniques, and drug chemistry. The chemical design process and evaluation of potential future medications will be a prime focus. 

Experiential learning

• A five-year Co-operative Education option is available, all of which satisfy the guidelines of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education. These programs combine an Honours Bachelor of Science program with embedded work terms. The co-op option gives you opportunities to apply your classroom and lab concepts to real-world situations and help you gain valuable, relevant work experience to promote networking and lifelong career success.

This program has an interdisciplinary focus, weaving together physiological, sociological and epidemiological perspectives on major health issues.

In the Human Health Science specialization, you will learn the fundamental areas of science related to human health and disease, including anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology and neurophysiology.

In a time in which communications and digital media is ubiquitous, Communication and Digital Media Studies is a cutting-edge program designed to provide you with a strong foundation in scholarly, civic, and professional knowledge and skills pertaining to the roles, practices and impacts of communication and digital media in society.

You will learn about the fast-changing communication environment in which we live, explore the social and cultural impacts of many media and technology, and hone professionally relevant communication skills. You will develop specialized knowledge about how a range of media forms like TV shows, films, video games, wearables, smartphones, tablets, blogs, social networking platforms and search engines are changing the world. You will become a strong communicator who is able to present your ideas in a variety of forms such as research essays, case studies, journals, blogs, digital stories, mini-TED Talks, debates and videos.

Experiential learning

• A limited number of fourth-year students are granted an opportunity to participate in a learning experience with a community organization. The practicum course consists of 100 hours of fieldwork, several in-class seminars and a set of academic assignments.
