Biomedical Toxicology is the study of dose-response relationships in systems related to mammals with the understanding that the “Dose makes the poison”.

This interdisciplinary program at the University of Guelph combines studies in biomedical science, chemistry, human health and nutritional sciences, molecular and cellular biology and pathobiology, allowing students to understand mechanisms of toxic action and how to apply toxicological testing to assure the safety of new drugs, pesticides and industrial chemicals before they can be released into the marketplace.

In first year, students study the core sciences of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematical science. Second through fourth years are very interdisciplinary and include courses in chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology and genetics, nutrition and toxicology. Students take courses that provide a high-quality laboratory experience ranging from analytical and organic chemistry to molecular biology.

All students graduate with exceptional laboratory experience in analytical instrumental laboratories (with instrumentation used in modern analytical, forensic and pharmaceutical labs) as well as molecular biology and biochemistry laboratories.  

Learning Outcomes
You can expect to learn how to:

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of target organ toxicity and the processes involved in absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of toxicants.
• Apply methods for evaluating the hazards associated with exposure to toxicants.
• Demonstrate an understanding of how to measure and quantify the amount of toxic substances in a variety of matrices including drinking water, blood and urine samples.
• Demonstrate an understanding of how to analyze and interpret results from a dose/response assay used to measure toxicity.

The Marketing Management major is interdisciplinary, follows a liberal education philosophy, and is built on the Department’s expertise in the field of marketing and consumer research.

The Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies prepares students for a career in marketing but also for educating them so that they can be active and engaged citizens. This is achieved from a balanced curriculum of marketing and liberal education courses that provide students with an understanding of the world they will work and live in. Students will gain knowledge in creating, communicating, and delivering product offerings to create value to stakeholders in a global and connected economy. Students completing this major will be prepared to pursue a variety of marketing career paths and diverse leadership roles.

The Theatre Studies program at Guelph is a degree option within the B.A. Program and is dedicated to the integrated study of both academic and practical applications of performance and theatre. 

Our curriculum is based on the philosophy that the study of performance at the university level engages various disciplinary practices, both practical and academic, and therefore we attempt to provide both practical theatre experience and classroom study.  We offer a wide range of courses in dramatic literature, theatre history, performance research, theory and criticism, together with directing, acting, dramaturgy, performance creation, scenography, production and technical theatre, playwriting and screenwriting, as well as media studies.  The program has a special interest in the drama and theatre of Canada, and course offerings reflect this concentration where appropriate.

The Theatre Studies Bachelor of Arts program will provide student who graduate with the following program learning outcomes:

The BA Music at the University of Guelph is geared to students who have a significant interest in music and music studies within a wider liberal arts education. It is a comprehensive and flexible program that offers instruction in music history, theory and criticism and and examines the significance of classical, world, and popular musics. Students develop a high degree of musicianship through skills training, music lessons (for those interested in advanced instrumental and vocal training), and participation in a variety of ensembles. With new facilities in digital technology, we support the increasing importance of technology in musical production, distribution, and listening. Our students go on to further studies and careers in music education (institutional and private), graduate music research, arts administration, performance, and production.

Food Science is an applied discipline that draws on all areas of science: chemistry, physics, engineering, biology and nutrition. Food scientists are involved in the transformation of raw agricultural products into various consumer products. A tremendous amount of technical training is required to develop and formulate safe, nutritious foods, manufacture and package them, preserve their quality and supply the consumer with a wide variety of menu items and snack foods. In our new state-of-the-art facilities, you will gain these technical competencies and will apply this knowledge to industrial processes.

COURSE SEQUENCING
In the Food Science Co-op program, you will participate in three or four co-op work terms in addition to eight academic semesters throughout your five years at the University of Guelph. This sequencing is viewable below:

Students will study elements of physics including the exotic aspects of the universe, such as black holes and subatomic particles, or be involved in the development of exciting modern devices such as particle accelerators and gamma-ray spectrometers.

With an emphasis on hands-on lab work, the physics major covers the fundamentals of mechanics, electromagnetism, and quantum physics, grounding students in foundational physics while preparing them for more specialized study in upper years. The strong analytical, computational, and lab skills developed during the degree provide the flexibility to pursue a broad range of careers upon graduation.

The major builds upon nationally recognized expertise in teaching and research with many of our faculty members having received both national and international awards. Students take an integrated MATH and PHYS course in first year along with the chemistry and biology taken by other science students. Second through fourth year, students will focus on physics specialty courses with an emphasis on hands-on, laboratory learning. Unique to the University of Guelph, students will also take a Science Communications course where they develop activities to help people understand the concepts of physics.

• Demonstrate mastery in advanced Electricity and Magnetism, Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics, Optics, and Quantum Mechanics
• Apply Intermediate level Mathematics techniques to enhance understanding in the aforementioned major subject areas
• Demonstrate advanced laboratory skills in order to practically realize concepts in Electricity & Magnetism, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Quantum Physics, Optics, Nuclear Physics, Spectroscopy, and Electronics and apply these skills in self-directed learning
• Apply modern computational techniques to investigate various physical phenomena and demonstrate proficiency in mathematical software such as Maple, MatLab, and/or Mathematica

The Management Economics and Finance major is designed to offer students an appreciation of business and economic problems particularly in the area of finance.

The major provides a suitable education for a career in the business world or in the public service. It also constitutes a useful preparation for more advanced studies, including graduate studies in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Industrial Relations, Law, and Public Policy. The major is administered by the Department of Economics and Finance and students are urged to consult the faculty advisor.

A principal aim of the Co-op program in Management Economics and Finance is to facilitate the transition of students from academic studies to a professional career by enhancing the integration of theory and practice.

Biological Science focuses on the study of living organisms, their evolution, interactions with other organisms and the ecosystems that they live and rely on. The many areas of study under the umbrella of biological science allows for flexibility within the major and allows you to tailor the major to your interest.   

The B.Sc. major in Biological Science (BIOS) will provide you with opportunities to acquire the skills you need to be successful in a variety of careers. This major allows you to choose courses that fit your interests and career goals. Foundation courses cover molecular biology and genetics, biochemistry, evolution, physiology, ecology and statistics which will allow you to explore multiple areas of biology or focus in on one more specifically. The breadth of science that we offer at the University of Guelph provides students a unique opportunity to discover what fields of biology truly connects with their interests and professional goals. 

Biomedical Engineering is a field of engineering that deals with health and medicine. (e.g.: electronic and mechanical devices used on biological materials, animals and humans, medical implants and instruments, ergonomics, bioinstrumentation, imaging and pharmacology). Graduates in Biomedical engineering are able to apply mathematical, scientific and engineering principles to a wide variety of fields and find employment across the private and public sectors of the health care industry. The program provides students with a common base of knowledge essential to engineering, and then allows them to select from a menu of electives to attain a degree of specialization in one of three areas, or to choose electives which broaden their general knowledge base. Elective concentrations are available in the areas of biomechanics; biosignal processing; and pharmaceuticals. The program is built around the concept of interdisciplinary application of engineering principles to health related problems.

Building on an understanding of economic theory and applied methods in both the Canadian and the global context, the program prepares graduates with technical, entrepreneurial and leadership skills for a variety of professional opportunities in industry, government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The major provides a complete foundation for further studies leading to a graduate degree or professional accounting designation.
