The Faculty of Science provides excellent training in scientific areas. The Bachelor of Science General degree provides breadth and depth of scientific understanding and comprises introductory Science courses and upper level Science courses from two departments of your choice. This is a flexible degree program – students can switch to a Major or Honours program at any point in their studies (subject to eligibility) and is a great preparation for further study in professional faculties, such as Medicine.

The Judaic Studies program warmly welcomes Jewish and non-Jewish scholars and students. The program offers fascinating insights into the societies and cultures Jewish people have been part of from Biblical times to twenty-first century Canada. Judaic Studies promotes the study of Jewish civilization, Jewish religious expressions and traditions, and of Jewish cultural, social, and political formations and movements in all their variety. For Jewish students, Judaic Studies is a way of exploring their heritage and building on previous study of Jewish languages, history and texts.

Actuarial mathematics involves the application of mathematical disciplines, particularly probability, statistics, and risk theory, to real-life financial problems involving future uncertainty. This analytical approach helps people and organizations quantify and reduce financial risk in areas as diverse as life, health, disability, marine, property and casualty insurance; annuities; and pension and employee benefits plans.

Astronomy and astrophysics examine the universe, galaxies and stars as well as phenomena such as the birth of stars, how explosions of stars create fast moving cosmic ray particles and pulsars, and how the rotation of a galaxy reveals the presence of dark matter. A planetarium and two astronomical observatories enhance this program.  

Biology is the study of life as it has evolved and is evolving on earth. All aspects of life are examined, from molecular processes inside cells, to large scale ecological interactions between organisms in their environment, and how the changing environment shapes these interactions.

The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Bachelor of Arts - Canadian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to study Canada from a full range of disciplinary perspectives. It examines both the past and the present from political, economic, social and cultural disciplinary perspectives. Courses that focus on Canada in the Faculty of Arts are drawn from Anthropology, Economics, English, French, History, Icelandic, Labour Studies, Political Studies, Religion, Slavic Studies and Sociology. In addition, certain courses in other faculties including Art History and Geography and Environment, are also available form Canadian Studies credit.

Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program,

Flexibility
Students in the Actuarial Studies major:  

• Are required to take the same business core courses as in other majors providing the opportunity to study other business-related areas   
• Can take as little as four actuarial courses to claim their major in actuarial mathematics
• Are able to pursue a double major in actuarial mathematics and a second subject if they choose
• Have access to the business library that provides updated study materials that help students prepare for professional actuarial exams
