Electrical engineers oversee the production, transmission and use of electricity.

That includes everything from managing large power grids that deliver electricity to designing microprocessors for computers and other electric devices.

With the many applications of electricity, the areas of specialization are wide-ranging:

Physics is a disciplined way to reach objective conclusions about how nature works. It is about finding out what is real. And then, armed with this new knowledge, predicting the future. Physics provides an opportunity for us to set aside our emotions, our beliefs, our preconceived notions, and our prejudices. In return, we can find answers to our questions and learn something meaningful about how things work in the universe.

We need this organized approach because humans are easily fooled. We would like to think that that is not true, but it is. Arriving at a conclusion, however, is not at all a strictly ridged mechanical process. A great amount of careful thought, inspiration, and leaps of intuition are needed.

At the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, we offer first-year courses on the theoretical foundation of physics as well as the experimental proof of critical parts. Non-science majors can choose courses in astronomy or space studies, where you'll learn how the human species explores and exploits the cosmos.

Statistics is the collection and interpretation of data. At the University of New Brunswick Saint John, you will learn to develop tools to predict behaviour and actions across a variety of sectors including government, business, science and academia.

In your first year you will be required to take introductory mathematics courses in calculus as well as two introductory courses in probability and statistics. In your upper years you will build upon this foundation with courses in probability analysis, design and sample surveying. You may declare your major or minor in statistics at the end of your second year.

A degree in statistics prepares you for a career in analyzing a variety of factors for many types of employers including government, business, education and academia.

Our graduates go on to become actuaries, forensic auditors, insurance underwriters, market research analysts, medical researchers, public opinion researchers, statisticians and systems operation analysts.

The biomedical sciences are the foundation for many careers in healthcare. Bachelor of Health students in the Biomedical Sciences and Health major take introductory and advanced courses in biology, chemistry and psychology. They also complete courses in the social and biological determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, research methods and data analysis. The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to produce a well-prepared and well-rounded health professional.

The Bachelor of Health degree is a 4-year interdisciplinary program focused on all aspects of health. Students develop the knowledge and the skills necessary for success in a variety of careers in the health sector. The program is also comprehensive preparation for further professional or graduate studies.

Why Biomedical Sciences and Health at UNB?
Students in UNB Saint John’s Bachelor of Health benefit from its location next door to the Saint John Regional Hospital. Through partnerships with Dalhousie Medicine NB (DalMedNB) and New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Allied Health programs co-located at UNB Saint John, our students have access to DalMedNB’s Anatomy &Physiology lab and a state-of-the-art simulation lab at NBCC.

Our program provides students with a solid grounding in health and wellness in all its dimensions, as well as in-depth training in their chosen major in biomedical sciences.

Hands-on learning
Bachelor of Health students experience a variety of work settings in the healthcare system and in the community through job-shadowing and internships. Beginning in their first year, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in practical lab experiences and community-based research.

In the fourth year capstone course, students from all three majors come together to work in multidisciplinary teams to analyze and address a critical health issue identified in consultation with experts in the healthcare sector.

Good healthcare requires more than doctors and nurses. It involves managing large budgets, finding ways to reduce long wait times in emergency rooms, making sure there are adequate supplies of vaccines and other medicines available when they are needed, and recruiting, hiring and managing the workforce of a hospital, nursing home, or community health clinic. It also includes activities like overseeing the health and safety of employees at a manufacturing plant, planning effective public health education campaigns about the health risks of vaping, and connecting the manufacturers of new medical devices with the surgeons who will use them. 

What all of these activities have in common is that they require management skills: financial management; human resources management; strategic planning; marketing; understanding of how organizations function, and how they can work better. These skills are in high demand in New Brunswick and elsewhere.

The Bachelor of Health – Management in Health Major is a 4-year interdisciplinary program offering a solid training in management with a focus on the health sector. All Bachelor of Health students complete core courses covering the biological and social determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, and data analysis.

In addition to the core Health courses taken each year, Management in Health majors take a series of required and elective courses which develop the business skills necessary in the operation of various types of organizations in the health sector. The program is also comprehensive preparation for further professional or graduate studies.

The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). Biology is the study of life. At UNB Saint John, Arts students can major in Biology, studying botany, ecology, zoology, organic chemistry and microbiology. You will be able to explore the world of environmental science, sustainable development and public policies towards land and water use.

In your first year you will take introductory studies in organic chemistry, ecology cells and organisms and biology lab work. In second year you will add botany, microbiology, zoology and statistics to your course work and at the end of the year you may apply to major in Biology. Upper-level studies in Biology may include conservation biology, environmental law and animal behaviour.

Your biology degree will teach you to analyze how living things work and interact with other organisms. You will learn to think critically and solve problems through observation and evaluation.

The BA/BEd at UNB Saint John attracts students who want to accomplish two goals: receive the training and skills required to become an elementary school teacher (Kindergarten to grade 5) and acquire a Bachelor of Arts (BA), all at the same time.
