The interdisciplinary B.I.Sc. program at University of New Brunswick Saint John draws upon business administration, mathematics, computer science, and economics, with a focus on the methods and techniques for effective collection and analysis of data.

What is gender and how has its definition changed over time and place? How has gender been represented through literature and other media? And how exactly do we bring about change in gender relations in the world?

These are a few questions the Gender Studies program on UNB’s Saint John campus will address, by focusing heavily on concepts such as feminism, masculinity, queer studies, and transgender studies.

General Information
Cognitive neuroscience is a multi-disciplinary study of the neurological underpinnings of cognitive activity. Cognitive Neuroscience brings in perspectives from Psychology, Linguistics, Philosophy, Mathematics, and Computer Science to tackle the complex area of the neurological basis of cognition.

Every corner of the world has its poets, its novelists, its chroniclers. Comparative Literature at UNB attempts to understand the cultural and linguistic differences that separate them.

You’ll study literature across national borders, time periods, and languages and genres. You’ll read literatures in translation and discuss the implications of taking a literary text from one language to another. You’ll also learn how a broad understanding of world literature can help us grasp the unity of humankind through texts, while exploring the relationship between literature and other disciplines.

Why Comparative Literature at UNB?

The study of English is about the appreciation of language at work.  English students explore the impact and possibilities of words as they form into narratives and speak through characters to wider cultural communities at home and across the globe. 

English offers creative inspiration and critical thinking skills while empowering students to become highly literate in a society that values communication.

We will help develop your analytical and communication skills; studying literature will refine your reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, as well as cultivate your love of literature.  Through in-class discussions and seminar presentations, you’ll build strategies for public speaking.

Hands-on learning

The biomedical sciences are the foundation for many careers in healthcare. Bachelor of Health students in the Biomedical Sciences and Health major take introductory and advanced courses in biology, chemistry and psychology. They also complete courses in the social and biological determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, research methods and data analysis. The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to produce a well-prepared and well-rounded health professional.

The Bachelor of Health degree is a 4-year interdisciplinary program focused on all aspects of health. Students develop the knowledge and the skills necessary for success in a variety of careers in the health sector. Why Biomedical Sciences and Health at UNB?
Students in UNB Saint John’s Bachelor of Health benefit from its location next door to the Saint John Regional Hospital. Through partnerships with Dalhousie Medicine NB (DalMedNB) and New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Allied Health programs co-located at UNB Saint John, our students have access to DalMedNB’s Anatomy &Physiology lab and a state-of-the-art simulation lab at NBCC.

Our program provides students with a solid grounding in health and wellness in all its dimensions, as well as in-depth training in their chosen major in biomedical sciences.

Hands-on learning
Bachelor of Health students experience a variety of work settings in the healthcare system and in the community through job-shadowing and internships. Beginning in their first year, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in practical lab experiences and community-based research.

In the fourth year capstone course, students from all three majors come together to work in multidisciplinary teams to analyze and address a critical health issue identified in consultation with experts in the healthcare sector.

From emergency care for premature babies with immature lungs, to ongoing treatment for people with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma and emphysema, respiratory therapists play an important role in lifelong health.

Respiratory therapists can be found throughout the health care system, such as:

• Research labs within universities
• Private sector corporations
• Equipment and pharmaceutical sales
• Air quality testing facilities

Open doors

• A respiratory therapy degree can also open doors around the world. Health care providers in developing countries actively recruit Canadian graduates to help develop health care facilities and programs abroad.
• Following completion of the BHS (Respiratory Therapy) students may pursue further training in the specialized treatment areas of perfusion technology, sleep medicine, neonatal or pediatric care and anaesthesia assistant.

Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental and social well-being. How do we promote the health and well-being of all members of society?
Society faces significant health challenges. Healthcare is the biggest ticket item in most provincial government budgets in Canada. Still, many people don’t get the care they need. They spend hours in emergency waiting rooms or months to get into an addiction treatment program. At the same time, the Canadian population is getting older. An increasing number are overweight and suffer from chronic diseases. This puts even more pressure on healthcare services.

The average life expectancy for an aboriginal male in Canada is ten years less than that of a non-aboriginal male. How can we explain this and what can be done to reduce health inequalities? Research shows that regular exercise can prevent many health problems, yet many people still don’t do it. Why not, and how can we get them to change their behaviour? In general, how do we build communities that enhance the health and well-being of all residents? 

If these questions interest you, the Health and Society major might be the program for you.

In addition to the core Health courses taken each year, Health and Society Majors take a series of courses which further develop their knowledge and skills in health policy and policy analysis; their understanding of how income, education, place of residence and other social factors affect individual and population health; and their social science research and communications skills.

Philosophy helps students explore a wide range of questions from a variety of different positions. Ask the big questions, and accept there are no easy answers. Philosophy ponders questions about meaning, truth, ethics, art, citizenship, and freedom that define who we are as individuals and leads us to a clearer sense of our role in society. 

Philosophy is available as a major, double major, or minor within the Bachelor of Arts. Students can explore the major philosophies of the past and engage with the issues and major questions of today.

Mechanical engineers work with systems that transform energy and material to useful ends.

Combining the principles of physics with engineering, mechanical engineers design, develop and analyze machines, including:

• Aircraft
• Automobiles
• Ships
• Spacecraft
• Industrial equipment
• Robotics
• Medical devices
• Heating and cooling systems

The majority of mechanical engineers work in manufacturing and industrial plants, improving system performance, including increased emission and other environmental controls.
