The School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) is pleased to announce a new Specialized Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in Intermedia, offered collaboratively by the Departments of Computational Arts and Visual Art and Art History.

Geography is the science of place and space. Geographers ask where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment. There are two main branches of geography: human geography and physical geography.

Geographers also study the linkages between human activity and natural systems. Geographers were, in fact, among the first scientists to sound the alarm that human-induced changes to the environment were beginning to threaten the balance of life itself. They are active in the study of global warming, desertification, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, groundwater pollution, and flooding.

In the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Geography program focuses on human geography - how people and their activities are distributed across the globe and how people create and sustain the places that make up the earth's surface. You'll learn how to use geographical theory and methodology to solve real-world problems that have a geographical dimension — urban and regional planning, transportation, tourism and international relations and more. Human geographers work in the fields of urban and regional planning, transportation, marketing, real estate, tourism, and international business.

Health care is undergoing fundamental change from solely treating acute illness to focusing on a person’s whole needs for wellness—where physical health, mental health and social supports are explored—involving a team of health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, mental health specialists and others. In this new model, health managers, information specialists and policy experts are fundamentally important to leading the change and York’s Health Studies program prepares students for careers in these dynamic fields.

Not sure if you want to focus on Health Management, Informatics or Policy in your first year? Then choose Health Studies and explore all three. In addition to taking courses in management, informatics and policy, students study the breadth and depth of health and health care through a wide variety of issues and social contexts (e.g. status and disability, homelessness), including case studies in health care in the community. Societal factors that determine why some people stay healthy and others become ill are also examined such as income, stress, early life, social exclusion, work conditions, unemployment, social support, addiction, food and transportation.

Health Studies offers students the flexibility to attain a double major or do a minor in other Faculty of Health or York programs. The program also provides students with the prerequisites for postgraduate study in a professional program (e.g. medicine, law) or graduate school.

What You’ll Learn
Civil Engineering students at Lassonde learn about structural and foundation design, transportation systems planning and design, water resources management, wastewater treatment, and environmental impact assessment. Studying the environment has never been more important or complex. In order to make change, we need to recognize the impact we have on the world around us. Our program examines the interconnections of human life on our natural surroundings and explores the various perspectives, approaches and inequalities that exist in the world today.  An introductory first year allows you to expand your passion for environmental and social justice through a common core course approach. Then, specialize for your future career success in one of the following: Environmental Management; Urban & Regional Environments; Environmental Politics, Justice & the Arts.

The Sexuality Studies program is an undergraduate program affiliated with York’s world renowned School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies.

Sexuality Studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores artistic, cultural, economic, geographic, historical, literary, political, psychological and social aspects of sexuality. Our program examines sexuality in transnational contexts and investigates intersections of sexuality with ability, age, class, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, health, nationality, race and religion.

You will learn alternative ways of organizing sexualities and alternatives to sexuality, in the past, present and future, as well as explore and gain a comprehensive understanding of sexual:

Students in Sexuality Studies can choose from more than 50 courses from various academic areas and take discipline-based courses in fields such as anthropology, geography, history, literature, philosophy, political science, and sociology. Explore further with interdisciplinary courses that use diverse theories and methods derived from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts and professional studies. Courses, seminars, lectures and special events address lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersexual, cissexual, heterosexual and heteronormative topics.

• You will have the opportunity to learn from more than 20 affiliated professors with international reputations for outstanding work in the field of sexuality studies.
• Sexuality Studies at York is unlike other programs because it is interdisciplinary and transnational. You can combine a sexuality studies degree (major or minor) with another more traditional degree (like psychology), or complete a Sexuality Studies certificate (open to all, regardless of educational background).
• Outside the classroom, you can participate in the activities of the Centre for Women and Trans People at York which offers resources, seminars, and activities. At the Keele Campus students are welcome to join SexGen, a program responsible for addressing issues and concerns of sexual and gender diversity, whether in terms of university policy areas, academic climate or the general university environment.

Political Science encompasses not only the actions of governments, political parties and the courts, but also political movements in society and in the power relations of everyday life.

• Our Political Science professors are internationally known. Professor Leo Pantich is the Canada Research Chair in Comparative Political Economy and Professor Leah Voskos is the Canada Research Chair in Feminist Political Economy.

Global health challenges, such as chronic and communicable diseases, do not recognize borders. The health of the world’s population is intertwined with broader issues, including wealth disparity, environmental degradation, government policy and human rights. York’s Global Health degree examines these and other issues to prepare students for careers in global health locally, nationally and internationally.

All students, whether in the BA or BSc options, are exposed to the major issues that are at the forefront of global health through core courses, including:

Courses cover global health concerns including communicable diseases (such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, ebola, and malaria), chronic diseases (such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer), age-related illnesses (such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease), maternal and child health, mental illness, and the health consequences of trauma, violence, war and displacement. The global health program also focuses on the organization, financing and management of health service systems.
