Our Civil and Environmental Engineering four-year degree course will give you all the technical skills and intellectual know-how to be a civil engineer in a constantly changing world.

Our MEng course focusses on infrastructure engineering and will give you the practical skills and experience needed to work on multimillion pound infrastructure projects. You’ll develop crucial mathematical, technical and design skills that all civil engineers need, while taking a more holistic view of the overall design of a built environment which is resilient to future challenges.

With our newly designed courses your learning will be based around the civil engineering project, giving you the chance to immediately apply the theory you learn in class to the challenges of the project.

Studying our MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering degree course will give you the knowledge and skills in the management of construction projects. You will assess the safety of a structure such as an old building to approve it as safe for others to work on, and provide specifications and calculations for designs.

Using our specialist workshops and labs you will learn how to carry out site investigations, select the best materials for the job, analyse and design structures and engineering systems, plan the construction process and assess and mitigate the environmental impact of the project. You’ll design, analyse, build and test your projects, developing your technical skills and knowledge through hands-on practice, preparing you to hit the ground running as a graduate civil engineer.

Our facilities are the perfect places to test and research different materials and designs. Throughout your engineering degree, you’ll work in specialist labs for geotechnics, hydraulics, structures, engineering materials and concrete testing. You'll go out on site visits, and hear guest lecturers from industry. You might even want to enhance your skills and CV while you study.

What is the difference between a BEng and a BSc?
Our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering course focuses on the contractor and production, so if it's the construction site that excites you, this is course for you. If you're interested in the design and analysis of infrastructure, the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering will give you the theoretical framework to work in consultancy.

So what is an MEng?
Our BEng and BSc courses are both accredited. However, to reach CEng (Chartered Status) you will need to go on and do a Masters degree. An MEng is a four-year course that incorporates a BEng degree with a postgraduate year, giving you the ability to apply for CEng status at the end of your course.

What are the differences between our MEng courses?
Our MEng courses will have a lot of shared modules, but give you the opportunity to specialise in your preferred area as well as gain CEng status. If you aren’t sure what area you want to focus on, there's always the chance to switch courses when you join with us.

We want you to graduate ready to impress employers with your practical experience and know-how. That’s why you’ll get hands-on from day one with our Managing Supply Chains in Practice module as well as with LINKS, our intensive supply chain simulation game.

You’ll develop crucial knowledge of supply chains and industry connections with our guest lecturers, networking opportunities and field trips to the Jaguar plant, Amazon’s Fulfilment Centre or BMW in Germany. You can also gain valuable experience by taking an optional placement year.

ARU’s teaching facilities include our Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab, where you’ll be able to practice your skills from the first year. It will be your safe space to learn all the tricks of the trade. This way, you’ll be ready for your first graduate role with proficiency in contemporary platforms that are used around the financial world.

Receiving an industry-recognised Bloomberg certification on graduation will only increase your pool of career options. Our architecture studios are exciting, creative places with industry-standard equipment. Here, our experts will deliver a learner-centred and research-led approach to architecture.

You’ll become skilled in developing design concepts, experimenting with different media, and representing your ideas through drawings, physical and digital models.

But you won’t be restricted to the studio. You’ll go on site visits so you can analyse the language and style of buildings, their construction, and see projects taking shape in real life. Together, we’ll explore building design, ‘buildability’ and sustainability.

There’s also an optional European field trip each year, to cities such as Lisbon, Venice, Rome and Vienna. It’s a great chance to explore how architecture contributes to shaping our urban life.

Your future career is important so you’ll learn about the construction business and project management. When you complete your degree course, you will have fulfilled the first part of the three-part process to become a registered architect in the UK.

On our BA (Hons) route, you'll study Level 4, 5 and 6 modules over three years in Chelmsford. You have the option to take a foundation (Level 3) course at ARU College in Cambridge for a year before starting the main part of the course.

Quantity surveyors play a vital role in deciding whether construction projects are financially viable. And so, through studying our Quantity Surveying degree,, you’ll gain a vital understanding of issues such as value for money, health and safety and the environment – as well as exploring the wider context of the built environment.

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be able to register with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and start working as a chartered quantity surveyor. You could also choose to develop a specialism or start a career in research with our wide range of full- and part-time postgraduate degrees.

You have the option to study this course as a four-year degree with foundation year. In your first year you'll study with our partner, ARU College, on our Cambridge campus. In Years 2-4 you'll study in Chelmsford or ARU Peterborough.

Engineering is in everything and an engineer is continually looking at how to improve products and the world. It’s about taking a product or system seeing whether it can change to meet demand – whether that is in development, processing, design, or even the materials used.

Our new four-year MEng Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering degree course is about combining the mechanical with the electrical. It's been created with a focus on project-based learning, allowing you to take the theory you've learned in class and apply it in a hands-on project module that runs throughout Year 1.

You will study alongside other mechanical engineering students, specialising in mechatronics and robotics manufacturing in your final year and in certain modules throughout your course. You will focus on the electronic application of engineering – how this can blend with mechanical engineering to move technology forwards.

While studying our Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering degree course, you will learn through a wide range of lab sessions. We explore manufacturing, 3D printing, thermodynamics, dynamics, and structural analysis so you can analyse, calculate, model, and experience your proposed concepts. As a part of your project-based learning you work in a multidisciplinary team with students from different areas of mechanical engineering. This integrated learning will allow you to develop skills that area invaluable to future employers, including analytical and creative problem-solving skills. Our Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering course leads you through computer-based advanced design, simulation and modelling practice in various topics including computational engineering, fluid dynamics, stress analysis, and industrial management

You’ll benefit from using our workshop and laboratory facilities. These include CAD/CAM and engineering computer modelling centre, industrial-scale CNC milling and lathe machines, metal and plastic rapid prototyping machines, scanning electronic microscope, Instron bi-axial fatigue-testing machine, tensile-testing machine, material-preparation facilities, welding equipment, electronic testing and measuring equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generating and testing facilities, wind tunnel, air compressors, steam engine and many more.

The construction industry is one of the most dynamic, diverse and significant in the world. We live, work and play in the built environment, and our Construction Management degree course will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of the technology and management involved in its creation.

We'll focus on the key stages and process of planning, construction and maintenance. These range from building design and technology, to resource management and project administration. You’ll learn about regulatory, legal and economic frameworks, the latest thinking in sustainability, and developments in digital technologies and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Practical experience comes in the form of a week-long residential visit where you’ll take part in the construction of an iconic building or structure – learning management and construction trade skills along the way.

The development of professional skills is embedded throughout the course, linked to authentic, practical assessment in many modules. You’ll also develop your communication, numerical, IT, teamwork, analytical and problem-solving skills.

As a BSc (Hons) Policing and Criminal Justice student at ARU, you’ll develop your knowledge and skills by studying real-life cases and academic research, and taking part in interactive learning.
