After a common core of modules that challenge you to think about politics from the local to the global, you will have the opportunity to follow one of two pathways specialising in politics or International Relations.

On the Politics pathway, you can take modules that deal with British Politics beyond Westminster, the politics of the Americas, race, identity and class in the City and the politics of sustainable futures. On the International Relations pathway, you will focus on global inequalities and development, security and peace issues and international crisis management. All students have the chance to undertake a final project on a subject of their own choice.

English Language with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a stimulating, thought-provoking course designed to make you think about how language functions in the world today.

English Language with TESOL at DMU allows you to combine the study of English Language with the key theoretical and practical issues involved in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

The course is designed to enable you to develop your own ability to teach English to non-native speakers whilst enabling you to think about how language in general and English in particular functions in the world today. You will study linguistics, grammar, the evolution of the English language and a variety of writing styles, while also exploring the theory of how to teach English as a second language. You will acquire skills in the analysis of digital communication and the study of language through the application of digital tools and methodologies.

You will develop a set of linguistic and analytical skills, which will help you become a highly-skilled communicator and prepare you for a range of careers.

Our History programme is diverse, international in focus and innovative. Exploring primarily modern and contemporary history, this course will teach you the skills for effective research and analysis, helping to hone your ability to absorb, communicate and critically analyse complex information.

Reflecting the globalised world we live in, the curriculum covers a British, South Asian, European and African and North and South American history and explores topics such as colonialism, decolonisation, immigration, ethnic minorities, gender, photographic history and the history of sport and leisure.

This course will hone your ability to absorb, communicate and critically analyse complex information. As you progress through the course, we’ll challenge you with more in-depth explorations and you can deepen your own historical interests. Alongside your History curriculum, you can choose to study French, Mandarin or Spanish from either beginner level or post-beginner level. This course is designed to provide a detailed understanding of the evolution of diplomacy and the way in which diplomacy is practised in the contemporary world. It tackles a number of broader issues that impact on diplomatic processes, such as the way in which states operate in regional organisations such as the European Union, the threat of organised crime and terrorism and the role of multinational corporations and companies.
