Journalists play a vital role in a democracy, and this course offers the opportunity to pursue a career that is not only exciting, but also crucial for informing debate and discussion on a wide range of questions affecting our lives.

The course is designed to enable flexibility to allow you to focus on specialist areas of your choice, which include music journalism, lifestyle and sports while also preparing you to challenge the status quo. Throughout the degree, you will be encouraged to focus on core issues of social equality, social justice, protest and marginalised communities in the UK.

You will learn the traditional core skills of researching, interviewing, writing and web-publishing, and gain multimedia skills within video and audio production. The journalism sector requires graduates who possess a broad digital multi-platform skillset, knowledge of media law and political structures, and have the ability to question structures in society. 

This title change follows a review of the programme and has been made to better reflect the content of the programme and terminology used within the industry, as well as to ensure that our students are well placed to secure graduate employment. 

The artificial intelligence industry is fast-growing and touches so many aspects of society, from business operations to our everyday lives. In this course, you will gain a detailed understanding of artificial intelligence concepts and techniques, and learn to use this knowledge to address contemporary problems and challenges such as the use of microprocessor-based systems to control home appliances and the detection and resolution of collisions in applied mechanics.

You will also be able to enjoy projects and extracurriculars related to your course. Get involved with our dedicated Robot Club, where you will solidify your skills by instructing secondary school children on robotic construction or take the opportunity to develop your own robot project, with the potential to compete in the annual international Robot Challenge in Vienna.

Over the past couple of years there has been a strong realisation that risk needs to be managed and not avoided, which in turn has a major impact on organisational strategy. To this end, this course has been designed for those wanting to have a career in Risk Management as well as professionals from a variety of sectors who are interested in strengthening their careers in risk management. This includes but is not limited to: accountants, project managers, insurers, chartered surveyors, health care professionals, lawyers, bankers, auditors, health and safety professionals and engineers and recognises the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.

It will prepare you to conduct fraud investigation and give expert testimony and litigation support for public and private sector organisations.

Learn about accounting scandals and incidences of fraud, and find out how they can be detected, prevented and deterred, with study of the legal environment in which forensic accounting operates. Discover digital forensics, including how to investigate digital artefacts, and find out how recent corporate failures in the UK, Italy and USA have led to conversations about the role of corporate governance and corporate social responsibilities.

Fashion buying requires both strong commercial understanding as well as theoretical knowledge. After looking at the roles and responsibilities of buyers – from design concept to point of sale – you’ll focus on the business side of fashion, building your knowledge of planning, branding, public relations/communications and social media platforms.

You will study computer-aided design (CAD) to ensure that your design and marketing concepts can be presented and communicated in a professional, and industry-recognised, style. You will also cover report writing, data selection, presentation and critical analysis.

On this course you will explore a diverse range of modules such as photography and video, television studies, and music industry management. You’ll have the chance to ask questions about representation in the media, and the place of audiences and fandoms. You will be able to choose from modules exploring journalism, political communication, advertising and consumption, and writing for the screen, gaining a range of skills that make you attractive to global employers.

For your language studies you can choose from French, the official language in 32 countries, or Mandarin, the world’s most natively spoken language. You can start your study of languages at DMU at beginner (French or Mandarin), intermediate, or advanced level.

Computational Intelligence (CI) encompasses the techniques and methods used to tackle problems that traditional approaches to computing struggle to solve. The four areas of fuzzy logic, neural networks, CI optimisation and knowledge-based systems encompass much of what is considered to be computational (or artificial) intelligence. There are also opportunities to apply what you learn in areas such as robot control and games development, depending on your interests.

You can choose from a number of specialist modules including natural language processing, artificial neural networks and data mining techniques, while developing your skills in our dedicated robotics laboratory, equipped with a variety of mobile robots. The applied computational intelligence module considers knowledge-based systems, as well as the historical, philosophical and future implications of AI, and focuses on current research and applications in the area.

By embedding stimulating themes throughout our distinctive course structure we give you the opportunity to develop skills across fiction, poetry, memoir, the graphic novel, screenwriting, non-fiction, audio and performance writing, concrete poetry and new media.

You’ll examine the relationship between word, image, and sound and, by the end of your course, you won’t just be writing – you’ll also be producing your own professional-standard publications. As a final confidence boost we include final-year voice coaching to help you leave DMU as a self-assured public performer.

We will help you develop into a creative professional such as craftsperson, jeweller, ceramicist, textile artist, designer-maker, glass artist, designer, researcher, consultant, curator, buyer, stylist or educator. You will be encouraged to select a specialism, helping you establish your own personal creative voice and be capable of producing inspiring work.

You will explore both traditional hand skills and emerging technologies while working with a wide range of materials such as hot glass, clay, paper, fine metals, plastics, resin, wood and textiles. Students produce a wide range of objects, including individual artefacts for galleries and to commission, small batches of similar items, limited editions, public installations and designs for industry. Bespoke objects are produced for domestic, interior spaces, exterior spaces, to be worn on the body, and can be hand-held or large-scale sculptural pieces.

Professional practice is embedded throughout the course to grow your entrepreneurial and business skills, preparing you for your career. Graduates have gone on to set up their own craft workshops, secure roles in design studios with brands including Sainsbury’s, work in the craft industry with leading ceramicists, for example Sue Pryke and Hannah Tounsend, as well as to collaborate with the likes of the National Trust.

Our course combines academic excellence and professional practice, with a focus on producing festival-ready animation, building an online presence, and creating an industry-standard showreel to prepare you to work in the industry. 

We encourage you to be innovative, creative and push the boundaries of storytelling and artistic style. You will receive a grounding in the fundamental skills of animation, with the opportunity to develop more specialist skills from the second year of study. 

You will develop your own distinct style and voice, as well as enhancing your technical and creative knowledge by studying modules such as 2D Animation, Critical Studies, and Visual Communication. 

Our excellent facilities include dedicated animation, recording and sound studios, graphics studios, computer suites, and a suite of Cintiq stations. You will be supported to master professional tools, such as TVPaint, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.
