Microbiology is the study of the millions of micro-organisms with which we share our world, dealing with those that cause disease and making use of those of benefit to us. It's a fascinating subject as identifying dangerous microbes, stopping their spread and treating their effects is vital and often life-saving work. This is a particularly pertinent subject to consider studying in light of the global pandemic and prospective diseases and zoonosis that are increasingly prevalent.

This course has a strong practical element, with an emphasis on developing the skills needed in a laboratory and gaining hands-on experience of diagnostic techniques. You will be able to study and learn within the University's specialist laboratories which include a microbiology lab, a modern, well-equipped cell culture facility and cutting-edge equipment such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers and flow cytometers.

The Biomedical Science courses at Middlesex have a burgeoning international reputation and the University's strong links with London hospital laboratories and Public Health England ensures that you will be studying the latest developments, practices and research. Our Centre for Investigative and Diagnostic Oncology has pioneered techniques for cancer diagnosis and treatment, including our breakthrough in the development of a vaccine for bladder cancer.

If you do not wish to study the full MSc, you can apply to the PGDip where you study only eight modules, omitting the Dissertation, or a PGCert where you study only four modules.

During the foundation year you will learn how computers are used by a broad range of people and organisations as well as acquiring fundamental software development skills and knowledge of hardware. You also gain relevant mathematical and statistical skills and develop useful communication skills.

BEng Electronic Engineering

In today’s technically advancing world, our hands-on approach will put you at the forefront of the next generation of electronic engineers, where you will have a significant impact on modern life.

Our degree gives you the specialist skills, knowledge and practical experience you need to achieve your career ambitions, enabling you to design the electronic systems that shape the way we live. You’ll gain a broad understanding of both digital and analogue electronic systems. You’ll also enhance your problem-solving ability and learn to use professional methods and software to build complex electronic circuits and systems.

You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in these subject areas. The number of students who progress to degree study are very high - in fact some of these students have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.

BA Law

You will learn the principles of the English legal system, and gain reflection through social, political, economic, ethical and historical perspectives. You will also build a range of transferable skills, including abstract thinking and problem solving, that will allow you to prepare practically as well as academically for a successful legal career.

This course is ideal for those who are interested in how businesses are operated and managed, but who also want to develop their own marketing expertise.

Through workshops, role-plays, problem solving exercises and analysing case studies, you'll learn to communicate your ideas and help to sell your products and services to customers. You’ll also study the key business functions that organisations require for success.

In terms of your career after your graduate, a BA in Business Management with a focus on marketing opens up a broad career path. The skills you'll develop are needed across almost every business and governmental sector, as well as third party organisations.

Developing a business acumen
Developing the essential skills required for business will be at the core of your course. You’ll develop your business acumen so you can deal with any challenge you’ll face in your fast-paced career.

Overt the course of this Business Management and Marketing degree you’ll learn by doing – the vast majority of our modules are practical, and you’ll be assessed based on real life case studies and simulations.

During the marketing section, you’ll take on a range of digital marketing courses. You also have the opportunity to work on a marketing consultancy project where an external client will provide a project brief and you’ll work in a team to provide practical, actionable solutions. This gives you the opportunity to put your marketing knowledge into action, and ensures you are able to problem solve and negotiate as part of a team.

A broad career path
You’ll get the support you need to succeed. From your Personal Tutor to your Graduate Academic Assistant, each one has studied your subject and will provide the support you need based on their first hand experience. If you need a little help with writing, numeracy or library skills, we can help with that too.

Once you graduate, you could be working in a range of organisations such as Western Union, Emirates, Kimberley Clark and more. Previously, our graduates have gone on to work with the likes of UASC (United Arab Shipping Company).

However, if working for someone else doesn’t seem like your thing, that’s okay too – this degree enables you to set up your own business and our enterprise hub means that we’ll support you along the way.

Not all nutrition courses take a holistic approach to the subject. Our BSc Nutrition programme is interdisciplinary in its approach, exploring the link between diet, health, disease and performance. As nutritionists play a key role in creating and translating research into nutritional advice and policies, you’ll learn all about how the human body uses nutrients and the effects this has on health.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, our course will advance your employability by developing skills like communication, numeracy, research, team working, creative thinking, and more. Your new skills will be relevant in a variety of careers, especially dietician, nutritional therapist, and science writer. If you’d like to focus on nutrition directly after graduation you’ll have the chance to work as a nutritional advisor, food scientist, heath trainer, or sports nutritionist.

Typical employers of nutrition graduates include the NHS, Public Health England, food manufacturers, plus the catering and hospitality industry.

Learn to apply your skills

• Our course offers you the unique opportunity to undertake a 12-month placement in your third year before returning for a final year of study subject to availability in light of the Covid 19 pandemic. Completing the placement will mean you graduate with a BSc Nutrition (Professional Practice) degree, which highlights the additional practical skills you’ve gained to prospective employers. You’ll get plenty of support from our Employability Advisors, who’ll ensure you secure a placement that closely matches your interests.
• Members of the Nutrition Society have the option of taking advantage of its internship programme. Other potential placement opportunities include Unilever, GSK, sports clubs, NHS Primary Care Trusts, and Nestle.
• During your studies, you’ll use innovative technology to enhance your learning. You’ll be taught with a mixture of seminars, group and individual tutorials, and through laboratory classes to help you gain theoretical and practical knowledge of nutrition.

he basis for a wide range of computer-based careers, computer science studies opens up opportunities across all sectors – from software development to systems engineering and everywhere in between. Our course helps you develop the skills, knowledge and experience that will attract employers and help you achieve your computer-based career goals. You also have the option of extending your studies to 4 years and gaining an MComp qualification.

You’ll gain an understanding of the key principles of computer science while you develop your programming, system engineering, and project experience skills. You’ll also get the support, encouragement and confidence to put your skills into practice through individual and group projects. Your first year will be entirely project led, ensuring you practice your skills from the very start.

In the past our students have worked on a project with the prestigious Pink Shoe Club , creating prototypes for a unique digital self-assessment tool.

Build your computer science skills

• You’ll have the opportunity to take a year-long, paid work experience placement as part of a four-year study path. Placements are subject to availability of employer organisations and opportunities may be limited as a result of Covid-19. We’ll also give you access to industry professionals and work experience opportunities to help you further develop your professional skills.
• We ensure you get the skills, knowledge and experience that will help you launch a successful computer-based career.
• We’re in the process of gaining BCS (British Computer Society) accreditation for our computer science degrees, which means you’ll be able to gain BCS membership once it’s awarded.

The Foundation Year in Accounting and Finance is offered as an entry route to a business degree for those who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study.

BSc Honours Business Accounting

Our flexible three-year and four-year study options give you the chance to develop your professional and practical skills through work experience in the industry. You’ll have the opportunity to take two 18-week summer placements as part of a three-year degree, or a 36-week paid work placement in your third year as part of a four-year approach.

After your first year, you’ll have the option to switch to our accounting course if you decide that a career as a qualified accountant is a better fit for you, though this is dependent on the standard of your academic results.

Learning about computer-based systems can open a lot of different career doors. Our information technology course combines theoretical knowledge with practical experiments to prepare you for the world of work. You’ll have access to a wide range of advanced equipment and software. Our interworking labs come equipped with telecommunication equipment, high-end simulation software, and much more. We even have remote access for the features you will need.

A degree in information technology is a great step to a career in the IT field. You can look forward to securing a key role in the IT support sector, IT project development and anywhere else that database and multimedia skills are needed. How you’ll apply your new skills

International politics has never been so relevant to our daily lives, which means that our BA in International Politics and Law will open up opportunities in all areas of this diverse and dynamic field, from public service, and international relations to regional organisations, NGOs, diplomacy, the media, and everything in between.

Combining political theory and international relations with legal perspectives, you’ll develop your legal skills, enhance your critical and analytical thinking, and learn the political concepts and analytical tools that will help you advance your career in the increasingly complex field of global politics, international law and governance.
