Delivering project management skills

During your course you’ll study project management using software applications. You’ll gain the knowledge and capability to use these tools in a dynamic environment. You’ll learn to use Microsoft Project, SAP, and a host of other software that helps you to manage and control projects.

You’ll also learn about the key functions of a successful business – strategy development, management styles, business resourcing and more.

You’ll take part in group projects, talking to project managers who work on live projects so you can understand more about the role in business. You’ll also have guest speakers and coursework based on ongoing projects in a range of industries.

Our sociology BA teaches you essential hands-on skills while you develop the research ability and theoretical knowledge that allows you to understand the effects of social issues on society. Our sociology courses are taught within an interdisciplinary department of our School of Law, bringing you in contact with some of the leading scholars in the industry.

You will have the freedom to choose your modules and focus of study in your second and third year meaning you can tailor your degree to your individual interests and future career goals. The programme itself has a strong focus on race and "decentering" the discipline of sociology, making it ever more relevant in today's world and making intersectionality a central feature of your study and practice. This BA is an independent, studio-based programme which looks specifically at illustration as professional practice. Learn to challenge the boundaries of illustration in a creative studio environment with your peers, and discover where you can make a difference in the exciting world of illustration. You will have extensive access to some of the best workshop facilities in the country, including print processes such as etching, lithography, silkscreen, lino and monoprint, as well as a letterpress workshop and digital and traditional photographic studios and darkrooms.

We have an excellent record of success in international competitions. Past students have achieved many D&AD gold awards in a number of categories such as, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation and Interactive design. We have also been shortlisted in the Macmillan Children’s Book Prize for many years, first prize in the 2012 Observer/Jonathan Cape/Comica Award, joint runner up in the Threadneedle Prize at Mall Galleries, and nominated for the Penguin Book cover prize.

We have strong links with the illustration industry, from publishers, illustration agents, and practising illustrators to graphic and packaging designers, magazine editors, App and Games Design.  As part of the course, you will enter international creative industry competitions and tackle many live briefs. Most recently students have produced a graphic novel and an online graphic novel for two museums and work for the BBC iWonder website and all year groups get to participate in an annual central London exhibition.

Gain specialist illustration skills

We ensure that you graduate from our course with the specialist skills you’ll need to approach agents, set up studios, and produce a website as you start on your career path. Many of our students go on to work in magazine publishing, editorial illustration, advertising, animation, and more. We have strong industry links with art and design employers. Industry partners sponsor final students as well as give visiting lectures while hundreds of agencies and organisations attend the final degree show each year.

Our course is unique in that as soon as possible, we will provide you with an individual workspace that you can treat as your own studio throughout your studies. Previous students have told us that this helped them with feeling creatively fulfilled. As part of your blended learning, you will also have access to our amazing workshops as illustration students often use the printmaking and digital media workshops, laser cutting and photographic studios.

In your second and third year, you'll have the opportunity to enter Creative Industry competitions such as the Macmillan's Children's Book Prize. Past graduates have won many yellow pencils in the D&AD while others have been shortlisted for the Folio Society and Macmillan children’s book prize.

The Foundation Year in Business is taught by the same lecturing staff who teach on our degree courses and you are taught in small group seminars, workshops and lectures. You will be able to develop transferable skills in business, communication and problem-solving.

BA Business Management (Human Resources)

If you want to learn how businesses work and how to manage people, then this is the degree for you. You’ll learn about the theory and practice of how businesses operate and what their environments are like. You’ll also study a variety of management styles, alongside the law and practices related to managing people.

You’ll be supported by a team of tutors who have industry experience. You will be exposed to key HR practices such as hiring practices, HR law, the ethics of employment and other abilities you'll need during your career.

You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto our three-year media degree courses listed below. The number of students who progress to degree study are very high - in fact some of these students have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.

BA Digital Media and Communications

Combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, you gain skills in areas such as new media, video production, website design, culture and more. Practice-based work includes video production (following Government safety guidelines), web design and HTML programming, data visualisation and smart environments. Great emphasis is also given to the management and analysis of social media platforms, with APIs and other sources used to present and assess social data.

Through studying both psychology and education you will gain an expert understanding of educational principles underpinned by the theory of human behaviour. It is the ideal degree for those wishing to gain the knowledge, skills and experience to enter a career within education.

Our degree, accredited by the British Psychology Society (BPS), offers some of the best psychology teaching and research facilities in the UK, including both a psychophysiology and a virtual reality laboratory. Not only will you gain theoretical and practical knowledge of modern psychology (the study of human behaviour), you will integrate your learning with the theory and practice of education studies.

Even in eventualities where we are unable to be in the laboratory or classroom together, we aim to use virtual tools to help you develop key practical skills.

Taking part in a year long industry placement can enable you to put theory into practice and gain invaluable professional experience. Our degree is an ideal step towards postgraduate training to become an occupational or organisational psychologist, or as a route towards an education-focused career. This can include roles within research, teaching or academia.

Our specialist course will help you develop the unique skill set and confidence to succeed in a challenging yet rewarding career that positively impacts on the lives of patients.

A shortage of mental health nurses in the UK means many of our recent graduates with nursing qualifications were able to secure graduate employment or go onto further study (DLHE 2017).

Nursing education in the mental health field will build on your passion for helping others. You’ll develop a holistic approach to assessing, treating, care planning and supporting people to recover and live the best lives possible. With plenty of hands-on experience throughout your nursing study, you’ll also gain the observation and communication skills to confidently collaborate with service users, families, carers and colleagues. In fact, many of our students secure their first job with a placement host.

Once you’ve completed your course, you’ll be able to get professional status as a registered mental health nurse and gain registration with the NMC.

How you'll apply your mental health nursing skills

• You’ll spend 50% of your course building your practical experience through a variety of unique clinical placement opportunities with our NHS partners across London. These include the prestigious Barts Health NHS Trust , Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and many more.
• We’ve got state-of-the-art nursing skills labs, professional training equipment and a building set up to deliver high-fidelity simulations in areas such as resuscitation and dealing with the seriously ill.
• You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to projects at our research centres, including our Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (DARC), our Research Centre for Transcultural Studies and our Centre for Coproduction.
• The unique skillset you’ll develop will open up opportunities within mental health nursing, teaching, research, educational outreach, public health, the voluntary sector and the armed forces.

This degree combines core modules in criminology and forensic psychology with optional modules on topics including drugs, trans-national crime and conflict, policing, terrorism and the major institutions of criminal justice. The programme is delivered within the Criminology and Sociology Department in the School of Law, with the forensic psychology component taught by colleagues with specialisms in criminological psychology.

The course is of special interest to those without a first degree in psychology but with a particular interest in psychological perspectives on crime and criminal justice. All staff delivering modules on the course are engaged in research that informs their teaching on the programme.

Students have the opportunity to study modules on criminology programmes with our European partner universities supported by Erasmus funding.

Students studying this master's degree at Middlesex will benefit from expert guest lectures. In past years observational visits to the criminal courts have assisted with developing knowledge of psycho-legal court room decision-making and a visit to an adult prison has built an understanding of imprisoned populations and the psycho-social intervention programmes operating within prisons. In 2020-21 such field visits will not be possible, but module teaching will incorporate specialist guest lectures delivered by experts working in these fields, together with the areas such as offender management, gangs, policing, prisoner care and welfare, and forensic psychology.

Students on the MSc are encouraged to participate in the Common Studies Programme in Critical Criminology, to be held either online or face-to-face.  This is an opportunity to build links with postgraduate criminologists studying in universities across Europe including Athens, Barcelona, Ghent, Hamburg, Rotterdam, and also at John Jay College in New York.

You will be taught by experts from both Psychology and Criminology who have a wealth of specialist knowledge and research experience between them, including Dr Elena Martellozzo, who offers regular expert advice about online child safety to the Metropolitan Police.

• Other research interests within the team include the criminal courts and justice administration; the treatment of mentally disordered offenders; drug policy and practice; violence towards sex workers; collective protest and social movements; organised crime and corruption; and penal abolitionism.

It is estimated that one in four people seek professional support for a mental health problem and therefore there is high demand for psychological therapies and interventions. This programme is aimed at those who wish to develop careers in psychological therapy or mental health by building on your knowledge, practical skills, experience and confidence when applying for highly competitive roles such as Assistant Psychologist or Clinical Psychology Research Assistant.

This programme will provide you with the academic, practical and research skills you need to continue onto further professional training in clinical psychology, counselling psychology, psychotherapy, clinical research, and health management.

You will be introduced to a range of approaches to psychological therapy and intervention and will be supported to develop a range of therapeutic communication and intervention skills both in workshops and through work experience.

As part of the Masters programme, you will also acquire the knowledge and skills required to critically assess research in therapeutic psychology and to undertake research in a topic that is relevant to psychological therapies or interventions.  You will be taught by staff who are therapy practitioners and researchers in mental health, psychological wellbeing and trauma.

Please note that this programme does not lead to a therapy practitioner qualification.

Combining chemistry with biochemistry, this course will give you a grounding in pharmaceutical chemistry and the skills needed to work in the field.

During the course you’ll cover all aspects of pharmaceutical drug development, such as target identification, synthesis, clinical testing and trials, alongside building your knowledge of the main branches of chemistry.

Our pharmaceutical chemistry course is designed to the standards of the Royal Society of Chemistry. During the course you’ll be taught by an academic team with links to the industry that include GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, and Johnson Matthey.

Building your chemistry skills in a lab environment

• Divided into four broad themes, you’ll cover all aspects of chemistry including core chemistry knowledge, practical skills, pharmaceutical knowledge, and numeracy and computational skills. You’ll build your analytical and research skills so you can collect and interpret experimental data.
• You’ll develop your chemistry skills in a high-tech laboratory. Access to the laboratory spaces at the Hendon Campus may be restricted in light of the ongoing Covid 19 outbreak, You will have access to a bioscience suite with a scanning electron microscope, microbiological and molecular equipment, as well as a host of other analytical technologies.
• As part of the course you will also take part in a work placement, gaining valuable industry experience in an organisation or laboratory. Access to placements may also be impacted by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
