The English programme at NCH is intended to bring rigour to a student’s thinking, and advance students’ powers of engagement with both literary texts and the issues with which they engage. The central aim of the Politics and International Relations minor is to analyse the relationship between the individual and the state, and the sources of state authority and forms of government, by understanding resource distribution and value allocation.

The study of Art History gives you the opportunity to see and interpret moments in history through their architecture and material culture. The History with Law BA (Hons) allows you to develop advanced analytical skills highly valued by employers. You will study six historical periods, from Roman Empire Britain through to modern America, as well as broader survey courses and the study of the historical discipline itself, and its applications and practices. Through your Law minor, you will develop an understanding of the legal system and how it has changed over time, and enhance your skills of reasoning and argument.

The Economics with Philosophy BSc will enable you to analyse the world with clarity, precision and rigour. You’ll study how people act, and how we can influence them to act differently. You’ll learn about the factors that dictate the real events and decisions that are taking place in the world today, as well as acquiring the quantitative skills needed to engage with the subject as commonly practised. In the Philosophy minor, you’ll engage with central questions, arguments and theories concerning our place in the world.

The Philosophy, Politics & Economics BA (Hons) at NCH offers three separate pathways to the degree. The Philosophy pathway enables you to study Philosophy as your major subject, comprising 50% of your undergraduate degree, alongside Politics and Economics as joint minors, each of which will form 25% of your degree studies.

The Art History with English BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll have the opportunity to interpret moments of history as manifested in works of art from antiquity to the contemporary, originating from as diverse cultures as Europe, China, and North America. Survey courses are combined with more media-specific subjects, such as architecture, landscapes, painting, and in English, a range of literary forms and critical responses to them.

In addition to taking period papers focusing on literature from 1550 to the present day, you’ll study rhetoric and stylistics. You will also study classic philosophical texts from antiquity to the present day, which investigate the nature of the world and how we ought to interact with it.

The Law with History LLB (Hons) is a Qualifying Law Degree, covering all of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board required areas of study to permit progression onto the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister.

Your Law with History LLB (Hons) will allow you to prepare for your career and follow your passions. In your degree, you will take all of the courses required for a Qualifying Law Degree, preparing you to take the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Your History minor will further develop your skills of evaluating evidence.
