In a world of transborder digital connections, with escalating social activism, fake news, cybercrime and artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty, sustainability and security are at the intersection of the most pressing contemporary 21st Century Politics problems.

Contemporary International Relations (IR) faces two main challenges: the first relates to ecological sustainability and the second to digital spaces. Both challenges pose new power shifts, influences and organisational structures in an increasingly interconnected world. These challenges are often regarded separately, however they are both uniquely complex and multifaceted.

The MSc in Digital Politics and Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary programme, looking at how these two challenges interact and the unique approaches to tackle them. Drawing on political science, political theory, philosophy, and computer science, you will explore the increasingly urgent phenomena of social activism, fake news, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and sustainability within a unique and compelling programme.

The MSc Responsible Artificial Intelligence is a well-integrated programme of study with a targeted focus on both in theory and in application. Presupposing no background in computing, students are equipped with relevant knowledge and data programming skills, covering not only recent technical developments, but also broader ethical and theoretical considerations.

The option to study philosophical issues of AI whilst pursuing a Masters level computing degree is a unique offering in the UK, allowing students the opportunity to delve on the technical as well as the societal impact of data processing and, in particular, machine learning applications.

The programme allows students to progressively develop their understanding of the techniques of data science, machine learning, and natural language processing, alongside key concepts and methods of computer science, while honing their programming skills in Python and Java; and, at the same time, refine their thinking and communication skills, through humanities courses devoted to a consideration of key practical and theoretical issues, arising in connection with AI.

Our Economics with History BSc (Hons) teaches you about the structures which affect real-life decisions and events around the world, as well as gaining a rigorous knowledge of the historical contexts leading to those events. You’ll develop the quantitative skills needed to interpret contemporary economics as practised, alongside the ability to analyse the theory behind both economic and historical study of the world.

Compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing from where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other organisations. and how artists and culture have responded to those institutions.

The Politics & International Relations with Art History BSc (Hons) will provide you with knowledge of the kinds of institutions people live under, and how artists and culture have responded to those institutions. You’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing from where they derive their legitimacy and how they interact with other organisations. You’ll take a course in political theory, questioning not only how these institutions work, but also how thinkers have theorised they ought to work. At the same time, you’ll take a survey course that will provide a broad overview of the history of European art, as well as studying more media-specific courses focusing on paintings, architecture, and so on. 

Learn how people have lived, and how states have attempted to shape and influence those lives throughout history from the Roman Empire through to modern day America. Examine the practice and applications of history, and compare political institutions of different countries, analysing their legitimacy to dictate over their subjects.

In your degree, you will take all of the courses required for a Qualifying Law Degree, preparing you to take the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. You will also study three courses in English, allowing you to develop complementary skills of analysis – of legal and fictional texts – and essay writing.
