You will also study three courses in English, allowing you to develop complementary skills of analysis – of legal and fictional texts – and essay writing.

You’ll have the opportunity to interpret moments of history as manifested in works of art from antiquity to the contemporary, originating from as diverse cultures as Europe, China, and North America. Survey courses are combined with more media-specific subjects, such as architecture, landscapes, painting, and in English, a range of literary forms and critical responses to them.

The English with Art History BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll take courses covering literature from 1550 to the present day, and you’ll explore forms of literature such as political speeches, the plays of Shakespeare, and responses to them.  For your Art History minor, you’ll study different forms of visual art in detail and their aesthetic and cultural contexts. These studies will allow you to make connections between art and the literature you study for your English major.
