The MSc in Nuclear Science and Engineering will prepare you for a career in industry or academia by providing a thorough grounding in the science and engineering that underpins today’s nuclear energy systems. It combines the strengths of our science and engineering faculties with an established program of nationally recognised industrial research through the Bristol-Oxford Nuclear Research Centre. The MSc offers a unique multidisciplinary experience and is a key part of the South West Nuclear Hub.

It has been developed and delivered in partnership with industry, including a focus on nuclear professionalism. After completing the program, you will be familiar with the nuclear industry and its unique safety culture, which will prepare you to enter the industry or continue in academia.

The MSc offers numerous opportunities to collaborate with partner institutions, such as Institute Polytechnique de Grenoble (INP), École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM), the Materials Ageing Institute (MAI) and Hitachi-GE Internships.

Jacobs and EDF Energy sponsor some of our research projects, giving students a bursary towards their study, as well as a three-month research project and a mentor.

The program is well balanced, covering a wide range of topics in engineering science and engineering practice.

Our curriculum embeds a diverse set of professional engineering and management skills spanning four core thematic areas:

• Design and manufacture
• Dynamics and control
• Materials
• Thermofluids.

Years one and two are common to all mechanical engineering students and cover the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering. Teaching is via lectures, laboratories, design classes and short projects in modelling and manufacturing.

In your third year, you will apply the principles learned to real, complex engineering applications. A major element is the open-ended individual research project, which requires independent and creative thinking.

This four-year course has the same basic structure as BSc Geography but you will spend your third year studying geography and other subjects at a partner university.

In year one you receive an overview of human and physical geography, and develop a range of geographical and scientific skills. The remaining years are organised around specialist units from human and/or physical geography.

Physical geography units cover three broad areas: glaciology, hydrology and environmental change.

Human geography units provide in-depth study of cultural, economic and social geography, emphasising the importance of theory and methods for analysing contemporary geographical problems and policies. Topics range from economic development and global politics to inequalities of health and contemporary social theory.

You will develop skills in the use of specialised computer software, statistics and data collection in the field. You will also take relevant language units to prepare you for studying in Europe.

Field trips and practical work are key components of the course. There are UK residential trips in year one and in year two there is an overseas field trip.

Your third-year studies abroad will be arranged on an individual basis. You will study in the language of your host country. The skills that you acquire throughout your studies will be applied in a self-directed dissertation project in your final year.

Sociology is a well established discipline, as relevant to the study of 21st-century societies as it is to the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution.

Sociologists study society’s structures, forms of action, and cultural practices and they are uniquely placed to understand the changes of social life. This course provides the academic and professional support needed for you to develop your own sociological imagination.

The first year provides a solid grounding in sociology, followed by a greater choice of units linked to staff research interests in subsequent years. Recently, these units have covered subjects such as culture, ethnicity, class, migration, modern slavery, popular music, racism and science. There is a strong emphasis on research skills throughout, with compulsory units in the first two years.

In your final year in Bristol, you will conduct a piece of supervised sociological research on a topic of your choice that draws on your research skills.

Data science is an exciting, emerging discipline that has a profound impact on society. The world produces increasing volumes of data every day and making sense of this data has the capacity to be transformative.Data science combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches to enable knowledge discovery from data. Employability prospects in this field are very strong.

Bristol’s data science expertise means that you’ll be taught the sophisticated theory and methods needed to address modern data-analytic challenges by leading academics in this field. You will study units involving a blend of theoretical background and practical skills designed especially for this new course, including Mathematical Tools for Data Science, Advanced Linear Modelling and Classification, and Algorithms and Machine Learning.Our highly interdisciplinary program features links with the Bristol Institute for Scientific Computing (BriSC) as well as exposure to real-world problems from our industry partners.

With applications across a wide range of industries, studying data science will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to fast-track your career. If you’re interested in pursuing further research, our Centre for Doctoral Training, COMPASS, offers the opportunity to study computational and statistical science through a four-year PhD program.

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within geography. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours Geography course, where you will acquire core knowledge in your subject. You will develop a wide range of geographical and scientific skills, gaining an advanced overview of both human and physical geography in year one, and choosing from a wide range of specialist units in later years.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

In year four we offer training in more advanced quantitative methods suitable for postgraduate research.

This course combines politics and international relations with the study of Italian. This provides a valuable skill set ideally tailored to the increasingly globalised workplace.

You will study the politics of individual countries and governments and the relationships between countries, communities and individuals.

Politics is organised around three themes:

• Political theory
• Comparative and national politics
• International relations.

In Italian you will study a combination of language and culture units. Today, Italy's innovative contributions to design, technology and fashion mean that it is a major, global commercial force.
