The first year provides a solid grounding in sociology, followed by a greater choice of units linked to staff research interests in subsequent years. In your final year in Bristol, you will conduct a piece of supervised sociological research on a topic of your choice that draws on your research skills.

This course immerses you in groundbreaking research and gives you the opportunity to contribute to work that could have a significant impact on future generations. It offers a breadth of topics, allowing you to choose your specialism while developing your knowledge and research skills.

In your first two years you will supplement your study of biochemistry with units relevant to medicine, such as pharmacology, physiology and molecular pathology. Your third year focuses on medically relevant aspects of biochemistry, such as those relating to cancer, cardiovascular disease and drug design.

In your fourth year you will carry out an extended, individual laboratory research project of up to 16 weeks under the supervision of a research group leader. You will also study Cell Biology of Development and Disease alongside a choice of either Synthetic Biology or Protein Assemblies and Molecular Machines.

This course combines in-depth subject specialism in electrical and electronic engineering with interdisciplinary breadth, creative teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. Alongside your electrical and electronic engineering studies, you will apply your subject knowledge by translating ideas into plans for digital and creative enterprises, both social and commercial.

The course will equip you to use the critical, theoretical and practical skills central to electrical and electronic engineering, allowing you to develop your knowledge and skills across a range of areas. You will gain a grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, power electronics and control, and will explore a range of optional courses and individual project topics. The diverse range of units allows you to focus on anything from electrical power systems to electronic communications.

You will come together with students from other innovation disciplines, such as computer science and management, each contributing a unique perspective on a challenge as you identify needs and develop ideas. Ultimately, you'll create innovative solutions together.

In common with other MSc Education students, you will take the compulsory research methods unit, Introduction to Educational Inquiry, and write a dissertation. You will also take the compulsory unit, Contemporary Perspectives in Learning, which is core to your pathway. You can choose the rest of your units from across the programs offered by the school. This course combines politics and international relations with the study of Portuguese, the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. This provides a valuable skill set, ideally tailored to the increasingly globalised workplace.

Politics is organised around three themes: political theory; comparative and national politics; and international relations. You will study the politics of individual countries and governments and the relationships between countries, communities and individuals.

In Portuguese you will study a combination of language and culture units. Portuguese is spoken throughout the world and Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil and Angola have complex, fascinating cultures.

On this four-year, joint honors course you will develop your language and cultural knowledge of German to degree level alongside core units in civil and common law – the world’s most prominent legal systems. The course is structured to help you think, write, reason, and argue like an international lawyer while gaining a rich understanding of the German language, linguistics, literature, history, and culture. It will also help you develop key skills in research and analysis.

This MA builds on these outstanding research strengths. It is intended for graduates of philosophy or mathematics who wish to study logic and philosophy of mathematics. The programme includes taught units in the Department of Philosophy and the School of Mathematics.

This course recognises the importance of statistical analysis in these two core disciplines. The course emphasises the benefit of studying econometrics: the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models.

The first two years of the degree are focused on building your mathematical and analytical abilities and include mandatory units in micro- and macro-economics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics, and the fundamentals of accounting and finance. These units allow you to develop the necessary skills to complete the applied economics dissertation in your final year, when you can also choose from a wide range of optional units.
