The first two years of the course are identical to our single honours mathematics degrees, providing a broad background in pure, applied and statistical mathematics which underpins more advanced material later.

Year one consists of compulsory topics. In your second year you can start to shape your degree; choose from an extensive range of topics that most interest you.

Provided you fulfil progression requirements, you will spend your third year abroad at one of our partner universities. This course is different to 'with Study Abroad in a Modern Language' as you will study in English and are not required to learn a foreign language. The world produces increasing volumes of data every day and making sense of this data has the capacity to be transformative.Data science combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches to enable knowledge discovery from data. Employability prospects in this field are very strong.

Bristol’s data science expertise means that you’ll be taught the sophisticated theory and methods needed to address modern data-analytic challenges by leading academics in this field. You will study units involving a blend of theoretical background and practical skills designed especially for this new course, including Mathematical Tools for Data Science, Advanced Linear Modelling and Classification, and Algorithms and Machine Learning.Our highly interdisciplinary program features links with the Bristol Institute for Scientific Computing (BriSC) as well as exposure to real-world problems from our industry partners.

If you’re interested in pursuing further research, our Centre for Doctoral Training, COMPASS, offers the opportunity to study computational and statistical science through a four-year PhD program.

The first two years of this course provide a background in mathematical analysis, modelling and scientific computation and their application to engineering. These core topics underpin the advanced material that follows.

As well as gaining first-hand exposure to pioneering research, in your third year, you will have a wide choice of options from across engineering and mathematics to fit your interests.

A major focus of the course is real-world problem solving, spanning many different application areas from robotics and social media to medicine and environmental modelling. Problems come directly from our industrial collaborators or address real challenges in current research. By working on these case studies and using theory and techniques from other units, you will be able to develop your mathematical modelling, collaboration and communication skills.

If you want to improve the world through the responsible use of data, the MSc in Data Science will give you the skills to do so. You will learn how to understand, in depth, the computational and statistical principles of modern data science and be skilled at the rigorous and ethical application of these techniques to real-world challenges.

Whether you have a background in numerate sciences, engineering, or computer science, the program will provide you with the skills to succeed in this exciting and fast-moving discipline and will equip you with excellent employment prospects to pursue roles in industry as either a data scientist or data engineer as well as for research and development roles.

This MSc aims to:

• Equip you with the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries in the effective application and deployment of data-intensive solutions in a variety of contexts.
• Give graduates a breadth and depth of knowledge and skills in computational, machine learning, and statistical principles and the capability for insightful large-scale data analysis, so you will be able to specify and implement analytical pipelines for real-world data at scale.
• Provide you with a good understanding of the ethical issues in the application of contemporary data science techniques to real-world challenges so you can be conversant with arguments concerning the risks and potential benefits and disadvantages arising from the deployment of these technologies.

The MSc in Data Science has been co-designed with industrial partners and is highly relevant to rewarding employment opportunities. There is a strong emphasis on responsible innovation and ethics to encourage you to use your knowledge and skills for societal good in the workplace or through further research. The course is closely associated with excellent research in the University, ensuring leading edge teaching. 

This course is ideal for students interested in learning how to use numbers and data within sociology. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Sociology course. You will study society’s structures, forms of action and cultural practices, and understand changes in social life. You will gain a thorough grounding in sociology, as well as opportunities to specialise in new areas of research conducted by academics at the forefront of the discipline.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

Our intensive one-year MSc Management with a specialism in Leadership, Strategy and Change is for graduates from a wide range of subject backgrounds. It is not necessary to have any prior academic or practical experience in business or management. This program is for students who aspire to management-level and leadership roles within their chosen industry.

Our MSc Management pathways provide an introduction to management, followed by a detailed exploration of a specific area of management theory and practice, in this case Leadership, Strategy and Change. The program attracts students from around the globe and you will work with students with different backgrounds and interests.

You will develop an in-depth understanding of the theories and practices that underpin leading change in the contemporary organisational context, characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.

We aim to guide, teach and develop analytical and confident critical thinkers. You will critically evaluate areas such as strategic leadership and leading complex change, including contemporary leadership challenges such as sustainability, diversity, ethical leadership and leading virtual teams.

You will be armed with the knowledge to apply academic theory to practice. Group work and presentations, often based on industry case studies, allow practical application of theory, and develop the teamwork and communication skills expected in today's workplace.

Bristol Dental Hospital has a long and established history of training program in both dental hygiene and dental therapy. BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy provides an exciting opportunity to study alongside undergraduate students on the BDS Dentistry course.

This three year degree comprises integrated and compulsory units of academic teaching, clinical skills and practice and dissertation.

Year one provides essential preclinical teaching and training, as well as an introduction to personal and professional development and patient contact on the Periodontal Clinic.

In year two you will commence preclinical training in restorative techniques for adult patients together with the dental undergraduate students. in your final term you will begin restorative treatment of adult patients at the Dental Hospital.

In your final year you will begin preclinical training in paediatric dentistry alongside continued clinical development, treating adult restorative and periodontal patients. You will be placed predominantly in community-based teaching clinics, treating a wide range of patients with a variety of needs, working towards a holistic approach of patient management.

You will complete an individual research project in an area of dentistry relevant to your role as a hygienist/therapist as well as completing your final modules in order to gain the BSc in Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Launched in 2019, this course has been accepted provisionally for accreditation by the General Dental Council. It is undergoing the normal process for full approval.

This course is funded by the NHS and therefore, we cannot accept applications from applicants liable for international fees.

This degree is designed for students with potential who do not have a science background. You can automatically progress from this course to our BSc or MSci Chemistry degrees.

Our chemistry courses offer a superb grounding in the subject. In years one and two you will study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and applications in areas such as analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

You will also develop your ability to design experiments and interpret results and gain key skills through our chemistry-specific communications and mathematics units.

You will get the opportunity to specialise after the first two years. BSc final-year project options include work in a research laboratory or a local school, helping to develop science resources or carrying out chemistry education research. On the MSci course you will complete a 20-week research project with an academic member of staff in your final year.
